Thank You Very Much Fun2, Very insightful, I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. It helps quite a lot. At this point I am just trying to make notes on any/all things I can do that will help my chances big or little. Knowing that the net test is a lot of algebra is a big help. I will really put a lot of focus on trying to get that backwards and forwards.

For what it's worth I will give my 2 cents. I am pro home birth, but even better I would think a birthing center. Now I am not fully read up just yet on how the birthing center is different from the actual home birth. If I could lay out the perfect scenario for me personally it would be to combine all the wonderfulness of having a midwife and a natural birth, but in a setting like a level III hospital for those just in case emergencies. (peace of mind). A close at hand back up plan if things go downhill quick. I had the pleasure of witnessing a home birth about a month ago, and I have also watched many on Discovery Health Channel. I loved being a part of the home birth. You had the close family and friends there, the midwife and her helper there. We all sat in the kitchen nibbling on yummies, drinking coffee, and talking birth war stories. The midwife was so insightful, and they really encourage the laboring mother do go with what her body feels naturally and not be ashamed (breath, moan, pant, yodel if it makes you feel better). With a hospital birth it's get them in, get them on Pitocin, they are laying mostly flat on their back, hooked up, and have limited mobility. It's like let's get this show on the road, bam bam bam. With the home birth, she was able to take hot showers, walk, squat, turn side to side, lean, do the ball, try lots of different pushing positions to see what worked best. It wasn't bam bam let's get this going, fast fast fast. It was much more relaxed, it was warm and friendly, and very touching. She had the baby nursing and skin to skin immediately. I asked the midwife, she said that she had delivered well over a thousand and had never lost a baby yet (knock on wood). I have 2 children, both lady partsl. When I had my first baby, my OB gave me an episiotomy with a 4 lbs 14 ounce baby. Because I had too much epidural I couldn't feel to push. While in labor I guess I was panting and moaning (nothing major), the nurse told me to stop, and treated me like that was wrong. When I had my second baby (6.5lbs), different OB, no epidural, no episiotomy, better nurses, a bit more encouraging. If I could have had the midwife experience, in a nice homelike room at a hospital, that would have been the ultimate. I think if most women could have it that way you would find most women opting for it. What is not to love about it. Of course you have those women who are like - give me an epidural! And that is fine, it's a personal choice, but having that option would be heaven for a large number of women. Midwifery just takes a real different approach. They don't treat it like a medical condition, more as a natural part of the life.

What in your opinion is best paying area to go into and a good job to have? Looks like anestia pays extremely well, and I would think is somewhat low on the stress chart. I could be wrong. Talk to me...

I believe I had asked in a previous post if any schools in Texas offered the ADN to BSN program where you go one day per week. What I am curious about that I didn't ask is; how long does it take to complete an ADN to BSN in general, and if I do the one day per week program, would that take any longer? Once I get my ADN I want to work and do the BSN one day per week. I may look at the online stuff too. I am pretty hands on and visual, and if I were to run into questions or problems I like the security of having someone whom I could actually talk to. I am not sure if it would be that way with the online classes. Correct me if I am wrong. While we are talking extending degree's, I see anesthesiologist make excellent money. I think I read there is a program, but you have to have your BSN first? Any information to share would be most interesting.

You know I just realized I have no clue what nursing school is going to cost. I think I have asked a hundred other questions but that. I am looking at nursing school in Lubbock, Texas. What is the typical semester cost for community college, ADN? Take for instance somewhere like the equivilant of DCCD? I will check out El Centro's website and see if they list it, but in the mean time, some of you guys are going through this right now, so you will be my best source. Thanks Guys!

I am seeking advice from those who have gotten into nursing school. I am not in a race to get into nursing school, I am in the preparing stage presently. It will not be until next semester that I will start my pre-reqs. In the meantime I would like your best advice on the things that you feel helped you most. I will list a couple things in particular, but please feel free to jump in with anything else. I really want to make it into a nursing program somewhere, it is a longtime dream. 1. As far as materials that I can have around the house and be reading, studying, etc. until I start and get basics. For instance on the net test, what can I be looking at now and studying that will help to me concrete things in my brain. 2. When they are looking over my application - what are things I can do to help me stand out, or shine. I mean should I start volunteering somewhere now? Will that look good? Will taking extra classes? Any suggestions on getting a better foot in the door, Im open. Now before you say, who does she think she is? I just feel like I have some factors that will weigh against me, that is why I am just looking at any and all tactics to help even up the score. Take for instance - I started school several years back, but dropped all my classes due to pregnancy (sick as a dog). They dropped all my classes but one, somehow it slipped through the cracks and I have an incomplete or an F. I am 5 hours away from that school now, but will be going sometime next week to see if anything can be done about it, but I am not going to count on it going away. So If I already have an F, even if I make an A+, it is going to hurt my GPA. I am extremely bummed about it. I really need every possible advantage I can muster.

I have a better cure for frivolous lawsuits. Cap the lawyers fees. I think they should get 5000 and not a penny more. And if they lose, the lawyers have to pay the dr/nurse or whoever plus the lawyer fees. And the person who brought the suit has to put 10 percent of their earnings for the last year in a fund to help (pick a charity). That will never happen. The lawmakers that would make laws to protect us are the lawyers! (lol) I totally agree though, as a nation we should raise enough heck to help bring more restrictions to all the lawsuit happy people. What's even more disgusting is the "ambulance chasers" with all their ads on TV. Most lawyers take their hearts out of of their work and make it strictly a money making enterprise. Not downgrading lawyers, I have friends, that is the way it is.

I am new here, but I have been reading the boards a few days now. I see more positive so far than negative. Believe me, I left the mortgage business behind and if you think this message board is negative you would sink if you saw the one I used to frequent when posting a question or comment. It was awful and mean spirited. They would run down nearly everyones post. I find this message board to be heavenly compared. Friendly, helpful, open, I love it. That's just my opinion. It makes you appreciate this board a lot more.

As far as myself I am going to go to school first and get my ADN. Then after I have my ADN, I would like to work, but also go to school and get my BSN. My curiousity was what kind of options were out there. In my opinion if I am working fulltime, and going to school, it would help to find a ADN to BSN program that would be one day per week. While I am at it, how long does it take typically with the one day a week scenario to get that ADN to BSN degree? Hope that was a little more clear.

What's the difference between an LPN and a ADN?

I should clarify - My plan is to start ADN and go to BSN. I'm learning. Also - For those of you who are going ADN to BSN - What is the time you are having to take out of your schedule to go to school. I was told by that somewhere in Dallas that someone had this program where you could go 1 day a week. She did say the class was a several hour class. That would be perfect if that was offered like that, at least in my opinion. Thanks Everybody!

I am not only a newbie, but I am also newly coming into the whole nursing scene. We have just moved to Lubbock, and I am going to head to school next semester to start my pre-reqs. I have some choices, and though I am pretty sure I know what steps I will most likely take, I would love your input. Once I have gotten my pre-reqs I can apply to a choice of 2 schools. Covenant School of Nursing (RN) or Texas Tech (BSN). The question that is burning a hole in my mind is what will taking one over the other mean to me. More money, more opportunity, etc? I have heard it is super hard to get into nursing school, demand is great, just not enough classroom space. I have noticed in Dallas where we moved from you can go to some of the community colleges and get your RN degree. Can anyone share with me salary ranges for someone starting out in Texas. Does it make a big differnce from RN to BSN. My friend just had a neice graduate from TWU and already has a job at Cooks Children starting out close to 70K working in NICU. Which leads me to wonder if her neice graduated from El Centro Community College would she have had the same opportunity, and income potential. My plan is to go RN, then once I have that do the BSN if it really makes a difference in pay. My dream is to be a L&D nurse. Thanks in advance for everyones input.
