  1. I am hard of hearing and wear bilateral hearing aids for moderate/severe hearing loss. I currently work as a medical assistant and often stress about feeling sufficient enough to go back to school for nursing. I am sad for this student who worked hard and earned her right to be where she was but I also feel a sense of pride that she was able to rectify the situation and make her voice heard. You know what? I feel like if she can do it - I can get over my fears! Call it my new year's resolution.
  2. I feel I can really relate to this, having lost both of my parents to horrible illnesses (Alzheimer's and Cancer). Bravo for working hard and finishing what you set out to do! I'm in the beginning stages of my schooling and the work ahead of me feels so daunting. It makes me feel better knowing others have gone through it and made it out stronger!
  3. Where are you in your studies now? I have not enrolled due to some obstacles in my world the last few months but I'm still striving for my nursing degree. Did you get accepted somewhere? Still taking classes at CC?
  4. A friend on FB that lives in Georgia posted this story on her timeline yesterday. It is so heartbreaking that such a tragedy occurred and especially to students with a heart for nursing. My prayers go out to the families, friends, students and those close to these girls during this terrible time. Love from a prospective nursing student in Virginia!
  5. I appreciate this post so much because I'm starting to feel the same way! I always imagined going into pediatric nursing but after working the past two years in the front office of a radiation oncology facility, I really enjoy working with these patients!
  6. "It's like they don't even hear me."
  7. I am so glad to hear that DLB_RN! I am looking for backup because I know I want my BSN eventually and haven't spoken to anyone who completed their studies at Chamberlain. I even recently spoke to a recruiter who stated she's hired a few Chamberlain nurses and that they were very efficient and focused. Thanks for taking the time to reply!
  8. Thank you for your input hanoi98. I'd really like to apply this fall and have heard discouraging things.
  9. I hear different things about the competitiveness. People have told me some years more people than available slots have applied and those are the hardest years to get in. I chose the NAS route so I'd like to stick it out at NVCC, personally.
  10. I'm glad to see there are other people in the field with the same situation! I do tell potential employers that I'm HOH though so they know I'm not being a jerk when they call me from down the hall and I don't hear them/respond. I would absolutely mention it to them and they usually try to be accommodating so that everyone is safe. Good luck!
  11. I have been working on my studies to become a nurse and I'm glad to see posts like this! I'm sorry you are having a struggle finding the right candidates but believe me, there are nursing hopefuls like myself who have great work ethics! I'm ready to work evenings, overnights AND weekends I just need to get my foot in the door. Keep looking, work ethic isn't extinct!
  12. I feel like there must be a bridge or advance placement since you've already earned your LPN. I would definitely ask an advisor since NVCC would be more cost efficient vs. One of those online colleges like Excelsior.
  13. The accelerated online route doesn't take the summer off. The classroom portion is online and you meet for clinicals. It starts in January of each year. There are pre-reqs that are required first. It gives a breakdown on their site.
  14. This right here is exactly why I love this site! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me. I do really want to be a RN and I'm determined to make that happen. I've noticed that clinical technician positions at the hospitals like EMT training so that was my drive behind it. I would like to work in the clinical side especially during the program as I currently work in administrative. I really appreciate your feedback on your experience. I'm studying the teas book too and I wish you the best of luck on your goals too! You can do it!
  15. You are filled with great info wise one! Would you advise getting a LPN as a backup?
  16. That is so impressive! I have such high respect for paramedics AND nurses! I have interest in being an ED nurse and thought the EMT education would help. I am having such a hard time with the schools around this area and I'm weary of the supposed "diploma mills." I like the idea of having the experience and bridging later though. Did you do your bridge online?
  17. I'm hearing horror stories about the wait list to get into the nursing program so I would like a backup so I can pursue a career in the medical field, in the meantime. If you don't mind my asking, what have you done with the EMT licensing since then?
  18. It's been awhile since the last post. Anyone have any updates? Has anyone graduated? Are you still doing well? Are there maybe any new prospects (like me) scouring for alternate options than the CC for a nursing degree?
  19. I'm hearing several stories about the wait list at Northern Virginia Community College and so naturally I'm working up a back up plan. Has anyone taken the classes to get certification for EMT? I was thinking that if I don't get accepted in October when I apply (I'm on my last pre-req) then I could take classes for that and get a job as an EMT while I work on applying elsewhere? Any advice?
  20. Hey there fellow students! Anyone working on pre-reqs to (hopefully) take the Online RN program at NVCC Jan. 2015? I'm trying to build a support system and I'm down to my last pre-req, NAS 162. Let me know how you're doing so I can root you on too!
