Mayo Clinic Externship 2016 (Summer III)
Hi sbirdsell, I was a Summer III in Summer 2016. Yes you would be able to participate in the program I believe because we had nursing students who were completing the program and only had one more semester to finish before graduating. If you have any questions, you can call HR at Mayo- they are super friendly and in my experience, more than happy to answer questions. Best of luck to you in your application!!

UC Davis RN Residency Summer/Fall 2017
I've been waiting to hear back as well ever since my status has changed to "Route". It's been quite awhile since we all applied so I'm hoping we hear back soon or get some sort of status update. I called UC Davis HR a few days ago to try to get a timeline of when things would happen, but she was not able to give me any answers. I think it's basically up to the managers' schedule to decide who they want to invite for interviews because it doesn't seem like HR has an idea when that happens. Has anyone here interviewed for any of the adult floors, aside from the ICU?

UCLA Summer 2017 RN New Grad Residency
I called the Recruitment Office today 4/24 to ask if all interview offers had gone out and she said they will continue doing so through June since applicants decline or positions are not filled. Also I had some technical issues with my application so I submitted after the 3/12 application deadline but she told me that doesn't affect consideration of your application.

I applied on 3/13 for MICU and Transplant ICU and I haven't heard back either. Trying to stay patient and hopeful!

Mayo Clinic Externship 2016 (Summer III)
So I never updated this, but I didn't withdraw my application and actually got a call from Stephanie a couple weeks after to say I got in. I felt very lucky to be chosen for the Summer III program and it was one of the best things I have ever done... so if a future applicant is reading this, don't give up all hope if you are on the alternate list.

Mayo Clinic Externship 2016 (Summer III)
Congrats vic42975!! As much as I would love this opportunity, I think I'll have to withdraw I don't want to turn down other opportunities, not get in for Mayo, and end up doing nothing this summer. It just pains me to have to do it... Wishing the best of luck to everyone!

Mayo Clinic Externship 2016 (Summer III)
I just emailed Stephanie to ask how many they selected as alternates this year, as well as how many alternates on average make it into a position in the program. I also asked her if she could tell me what number I am on the list.. If they tell me anything, I'll post here

Mayo Clinic Externship 2016 (Summer III)
On the application website, my application got moved to the status of "interview" as well. Do you think they will actually interview us? A friend did the program last year and she said there was no interview, and she just got an email saying she had been chosen. I wish they would tell us so that I can start preparing for it if there is one

UCLA Nursing Externship 2015
Hi everyone, I am applying for summer 2016 and the application has not come out yet but I heard from Sheri that we will need 2 letters of recommendation. Did you guys have to turn in letters of rec as well? If so, is there any specific information that needs to be included in it?

Pre-nursing jobs?
Yes I have been volunteering for over a year. I volunteered as an undergrad at a different hospital for 2 years and then I helped to manage the program, so I have been volunteering for quite awhile. I volunteer at another hpspital now and have been there for 1.5 years. It is a bummer to not get paid, but given the leadership experience I have learned (and can put on my resume) it is worth it. Not to mention all the experiences I have gained over the years including how to talk to patients, getting comfortable with bodily fluids/seeing blood, and even having the opportunity to observe surgeries (appendectomy, c sections) and code blues.

Pre-nursing jobs?
I am in the same boat as you. I was pre-nursing looking for a job in the hospital that didn't require any certification. I would suggest a medical secretary or unit assistant, but I heard those require like medical terminology these days. I ended up volunteering at the hospital. I have been volunteering for 1.5 years now and now I am in nursing school and just started my first semester. My goal is to try to work as an ED tech where I volunteer but it is hard to get hired as a tech. But I hope the odds will be in my favor because all the nurses know me by name on the floor so I am hoping the transition will be easy and a job opening will magically appear! Fingers crossed I guess

Pregnant in Traditional BSN Program
Yes, definitely talk to your professors and instructors. At my nursing school they said that they have been running the program for a long time and they understand life happens- including the fact that students get pregnant. They said the most important thing is to talk to them ASAP because they can't help you if you take that test and come to them afterwards for help if you bombed it. They can make arrangements for you if you are having a personal issue or are pregnant, or whatever you may be dealing with. That's what the instructors told me at my school, but hopefully your school is supportive and can help you..maybe take a semester off and start with the following class for a particular semester or quarter

Puppy and nursing school?
No I don't think that's a good idea. Getting a puppy is another responsibility you don't have time for as a nursing student. Working out or yoga or something else might be a better way to relieve stress

ABSN accelerated second BSN programs
I applied to CSU Long Beach and CSU San Marcos ABSN programs. It was a pretty standard application to the CSU. CSUSM didn't want you to fill out the CSU app until you get accepted by their nursing program. CSUSM charged like $120 for their nursing app. CSULB also requires a separate app for nursing I believe. After you get in, you are required to go in person for an in person interview. CSULB is 5 semesters, through the summer so it's 2.5 years. CSUSM is 2 years. Sorry I didn't know what you wanted to know so hopefully something in there helped you! p.s. I also considered applying to Samuel Merritt in Oakland (private) for their 1 year ABSN program. The program is like $65k for the one year. You need to have your Pharm and Patho done in order to apply. I decided not to apply because 1 year is way too short of a time for me to absorb all the material and way too expensive. I would have been done quickly but with this job market where new grads are struggling hard to find jobs, I didn't want to graduate with all that debt.

Shoe recs for clinicals
I would not get white shoes for the hospitals. Dirt and grime is going to show up on them more and might end up looking unprofessional over time

Would volunteering be beneficial?
It really depends on your schools you are applying to. If your schools take volunteer experience and you get more points on your application, then I think it would benefit you. Otherwise, if not, I still think there is still some sort of benefit out of volunteering. I just started nursing school but I have been volunteering for at least 3 years at a couple hospitals. I think if you can find a position where you are as hands on as possible or have some sort of patient interaction, then it is worthwhile. If you are stuck volunteering as a greeter or restocking or information desk, I would say no. In some cases though, if you are on a floor and restocking, it might be a good opportunity to observe nurses and ask them questions about how they like the floor/hospital/advice in general. Since I have volunteered, I find that talking to patients is easier for me. However, I would not say it is definitely something you should do before nursing school, unless it gives you extra points on your application (and you need the points and you have the free time to volunteer).

Volunteer
There is a program called Clinical Care Extenders Externship (CCE). There are a few volunteer locations at different hospitals in Southern California. I did the one in Newport Beach, but I know there is one in Riverside and elsewhere. I highly recommend that because that is the most hands on you will get to patient care. There is an interview process and a training and you have to take a test/get your CPR/first aid in order to volunteer. But that program is great because you rotate through different departments every 3 months as a volunteer. It gave me lots of valuable exposure to what patient care is like and what each department is like. However, I want to mention that if you do volunteer there at the hospital, your role is still as a volunteer. You will not be able to give injections or help with wound care or any of that stuff you learned in school. Your role will be to act a volunteer and help the staff within your role, including preparing meals, helping with changing sheets, helping to give bed baths with a CNA, feeding, restocking, talking to patients, etc. I found that my experience was quite valuable and I got to experience a ton and observe a lot that I can draw on for experience and knowledge now that I am in nursing school.

OMG, is it only the second day of nursing school????
I think it's really important to balance your life when you're in nursing school. Don't overbook yourself with work or other activities because you will feel overwhelmed. Also, when I started 7 weeks ago, I wanted to read every single page assigned for every class, but soon started feeling stressed out and really overwhelmed. What I suggest is talking to previous semesters about what class I need to read for and which ones I don't; I felt guilty at first for not reading for some classes, but you really need to find that balance and make it work. I think talking to previous semesters will help you get through the program since you will be getting the tips of what you should know or what you should do to succeed. Also, I agree when people say make sure to do things that you enjoy! You need to enjoy life and relax and destress. I used to feel guilty going out and feeling like I should be at home studying. Don't guilt trip yourself-- focus in the moment. If you're out to hang out, enjoy it. If you're studying, focus on that. I think that really helps you make the most of your time!

How can I start preparing for patho and pharm?
I just started my nursing program this semester and I was worried about Pharm and Patho too. I thought those were tough core classes and I really wanted to well on them. Before the program started, I was planning to review my A&P notes to prepare for Patho but I got lazy and didn't do that. I am taking Patho now and I don't think it's necessary to do that if you have a good foundation in A&P. In Patho/as a nurse, you won't need to know what things go where and when to make something work in specifics. You will need to know in general what functions are and how things work. However, if you struggled in A&P, I would definitely review your notes. For Pharm, I don't think there is any way to study for that. You could take a look at some drug categories and try to know actions, side effects, etc but personally I feel like that stuff is so dry and honestly not necessary to review before you start classes. As a disclaimer though, I am in a semester system (15 weeks, ugh) so maybe we are covering the material much slower than quarter system, making it that review/preparation was not necessary.

SJSU Fall 2014
Does anyone know if we need to get a stethoscope, scrubs, or skills kit before we start school? There is no mention of this in the welcome packet but I looked at the thread to last year's SJSU incoming class and some students mentioned they already got these items prior to school starting. Also, does anyone know how much the textbook bundle goes for at the bookstore?

CSULB Fall 2014
I am on the alternate list and I did get that email about having to attend orientation to reserve a spot. I was going to call ------------- to see if my spot had been moved but thanks for the update. I was going to decline another school this week but now I don't know what to do. I was thinking that since the deadline to accept or deny was in June, that the wait list might get shorter as people hear back for other schools. I wonder if most people have already accepted? Did ----------------- tell you anything else in regards to how wait lists have resulted in the past? Also, I did find it strange that alternates just show up to orientation. She didn't mention that we need to bring anything with us, so I guess we just need to show up to reserve our spots.

CSULB Fall 2014
I also applied to CSUSM and CSUEB and SJSU and I haven't heard anything from them yet
