  1. Did you say no to him yet? If not, go ahead and say "No". After that it is sexual harassment. The workplace is bound to protect you by law. Do not pay heed to the gun carrying advice if your workplace or state don't allow it. You will land in jail for that. Get into a self-defense course. You may have to get a restraining order from a court and pay some money for that. This man is crazy bonkers. You don't need him in your life. He should not even be a nurse.
  2. And that is the story.
  3. Love your attitude and grit. This is what I needed.
  4. Thank you for the kind comment. I cannot even think of taking out a loan at this age. It will all come out of pocket. I already retired and draw SS. But I quickly realized retirement is not all it is made out to be. I feel devalued and unfulfilled without my professional role. But am I being a delusional old fart?
  5. Hello all! I have been accepted to a NP Program. Problem is, I am in my late 60s with lots of misgivings. Is it wise for me to blow up savings going to school at this age? Is it wise to spend the few working years I have left, going to school? How will an aging brain, knees, hips and ankles take it?
  6. My assessment is that OP being a new nurse is likely spending more time trying to find fault with the practice of others, rather than on learning the art, which is her major job at this stage of career. She is a novice. She needs to improve her own practice rather than tell everyone else how to improve theirs. How does she even know they are cutting corners when she is still learning the lay of the land. How does she know how to bring systemic improvement when she herself is at the stage of learning individual tasks. Getting fired by two jobs for the same behavior is a red flag in itself. I think she needs to concentrate more on her performance rather than that of others.
  7. Using common sense usually catches calculation errors. If you have to give an unusually high amount of any medication, step back. Take a deep breath, then take a fresh look at things.
  8. What I am saying is, it is your duty as a nurse to speak up for your patients. It never sits well with management. They shot you down one time. They will again. if you insist on doing the right thing they will destroy your career. if you want to survive in nursing learn to mind your own business. If you want to do the right thing, be prepared to pay the price.
  9. You have been warned. That is what nursing is about. Get into a PT or OT or Radiology program and work with decent human beings p.s.: Keep the mouth shut if you are not in the inner circle
  10. If you are sure if termination, resign first. In that way you will not have termination on your record. Find a job that fits your needs and tell them you were stressed out by ... Calling in and FMLA are dysfunctional ways of dealing with work stress. You need to plan your future. It is also dishonest to abuse FMLA for non-FMLA uses. It screws it up for genuine cases. Also, it will make your boss lose respect for you. Don't expect a good reference. You need to talk to a career counselor, or just any counselor.
  11. So you want the night pay and day work or not at all. FMLA, though taken in the wrong context here may kick the can down the road and buy same time. You will then caime back and face the same question again. Plan your career so you won't have to play this game again.
  12. What is their starting salary? I have been offered high 20s for triage which I can get+- at the grocery store.
  13. Us? Do you represent a clique or group or establishment? Am I missing something? Is this High School where the inner circle thinks they are it?
  14. It is one thing believing whether RV made a mistake, was negligent, was incompetent, or all of the above., it is another showing malice, hatred, vengefulness, painting her as a monster, and attacking and making vicious insinuations about those who disagree. the more rabid these attacks, the less weight in the arguments.
  15. Maybe that is what she is being billed as. The poster child for ... Poster children do get paid.
  16. Have you attended a lecture and are you able to validate she is passing herself as a victim? What is your interest in her life? She did what she did, whether a mistake or negligent act, owned it and was punished. She paid for her sins, now she has a right to make a living doing what pays her best, as long as it is not illegal. But our holier than thou colleagues would rather see her starve, become homeless, prostitute herself, or go on public assistance. I challenge each and everyone of you snowflakes to take a deep look in the mirror and contemplate the mistakes, negligent acts, and deliberate acts of hurting others you have done yourself and worry about your own salvation. RV is not a nurse any more because she was deemed unfit for Nurse Role. She was not deemed unfit as a speaker and she has a right to tell her story if people are willing to pay for it.
  17. Nurse education is the responsibility of the nursing department, not providers. I think a nurse has a right to question orders that don't seem right. A doctor has the duty to explain any off label or unusual orders. Beyond that, evidence based resources should be available for reference. Nurses should not depend solely on other nurses for knowledge either. The hospital should also have protocols and standing orders to prevent confusion and omission.
  18. Can we leave her well alone and stop resurrecting her for want of something better to discuss?
  19. You answered your own question. When in doubt, call the doctor, ask for explanation and document it if you follow orders. If you still don't agree with the doctor, inform the charge and ask for someone else to do it. If you were 'unable to' after trying, and nobody else helped, call the doctor and inform them and charge nurse. Document everything in the chart.
  20. I have an advanced degree and tons of experience, and have been applying to case management and insurance jobs for years with no luck.
  21. feelix replied to canoehead's topic in Emergency
EMTALA applies to acute psych too.
  22. Go for it. The math works out. You still have 13 years of hard work left before you can claim SS. You are getting old for the floor but can still handle office. Take out 3 years of school and you have at least 10 good years of career left as an NP. If you don't like the work, a masters degree will open other doors, like faculty opportunities.
  23. feelix replied to canoehead's topic in Emergency
Yes. It is an EMTALA violation and it happens daily at detox and psych facilities when people are declined for lack of insurance. So the most vulnerable, who obviously cannot obtain insurance because the are unemployed, lost their reason and homes can't go around purchasing insurance. On the other hand, hospitals cannot provide free services to everyone who walks in. The would go bankrupt in a heartbeat. Someone needs to fix the entire system.
