misdiagnosed with type 2 DM?
Ok after lots of research I beleive the worst problem for him would be liver troubles. Please correct me if I am wrong, but metformin sort of ages a normal liver.....I would think the effect would be potentiated in a damaged liver. I have written BIL for clarification on this matter. Waiting to hear back now. Apparently the jail systems here do not check his viral load. I wish they did!!

Dcccd?
I agree with that. Also you can find out what was the lowest GPA the school accepted last semester. Usually somewhere around 3.8 or so. This helps because it tells you what you have to beat to get in. I went the community college route and had great experiences with small classes and professors who knew who I was. Plus everyone there is also pre-RN so it is easy to make friends and form study groups. Good luck to you!!!

Online quizzes and study aids
hmmmmm first off congrats on your acceptance to nursing school! I dont really know of any online study aids. I have several books which I have purchased at barnes and noble and bn.com BTW, bn.com also has a section of used books........highly recommend this as it will save bucks!! These things are expensive. Also I went ahead and got a membership to barnes and noble and it pays off. I purchase there a lot. Good luck.

Pregnant and Nursing School??
During our OB semester we had two girls who were expecting. Needless to say, they helped a lot of us out by letting us practice determining fetal lie and whatnot. :) One of the girls delivered a month before finals. She had lots of help from family and was in class a week later. You can do it! Congratulations on your pregnancy! I wish you luck in all things!! :) Candice

anyone at harris meth southwest (by Hulen) in ft worth?
I did my very first clinical rotations there on M/S. It is a nice place. The people there really seem to care....it is not just a job to them. It is a smaller hospital. I put it on my list of places I would like to precept at. Good luck!

Dcccd?
I am starting my senior year at DCCCD. For me it hasn't been that hard. I study my a$$ off though. It is very time consuming and definately NOT easy. DCCCD is very big on Pharm. It was not a prereq for my particular program but dont let that fool you. They have a pharm test every semester and it is a Dont pass and your out sort of situation. That has been the most difficult part of nursing school for me. The best way I know to cope is to study your drug classes. I am taking pharm online this summer and it is helping tons. Good luck!! PM me if you want to know more.

CNA in Texas
Go to a Texas Health Resources hospital.......Arlington Memorial or the Harris or Presby systems. They have a program to put you through school....they pay for it all plus books. In exchange you work for them for 2 years as an RN. I work within the Harris system now. I do not have a CNA license. I am a PCT in the float pool and get around 12 an hour plus shift diff. They are paying for my college. I am starting my senior year. For me this has been THE way to go. PM me if you need more info or contacts etc. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!! ~Candice

Well, considering I am already married to a great guy, NO WAY!!! However, my hubby's brother is incarcerated. I write him pretty often. :)

Britney demanding background checks for her L&D nurses..
LOL @ that!!! Someone mentioned homebirth previously...........wasn't it let to the public that she had placental previa or somesuch? Wouldn't that make a homebirth not an option? Then again, I guess if you are Britney Spears you could always have an operating room built into your house just in case.

I was curious if the military might be the way to go for a flgiht nurse hopeful? My understanding is that they like to grow their own.

Military/VA RN's - Please post experiences for Students
Thanks for all the responses and info. I did have some bits of my own research to offer. The reserves....not all but AirNG and ArmyNG will take ADN's but they must earn the BSN within 5 years. I am not aware of any active duty branch taking less than a BSN though. I have one year left on a ADN program, then I am enrolling in the RN to BSN program so in 2 years if all goes well I will have a BSN. I am considering the AF reserves or AirNG in the meantime as I am on a scholarship and committed to work as an RN at my local hospital for 2 years after graduation. Plus hubby will be here for 3 more years in engineering school. He is currently AFreserve and prior AD AF so that is why I am considering the AF as well. The ultimate goal is for both of us to go back to active duty with a commission. :) I jsut hope they will accept me. As a kid my records had Chronic Otitis Media stamped all over them. I'm fine now but here's to hoping for a wavier but not holding my breath.

misdiagnosed with type 2 DM?
Ok I have a question and I am a student. My BIL is in the TX jail system. I found out from him that he was diagnosed with diabetes and hep c while in state custody. They put him on metformin for the last 2 years. Nothing for hep c.....too $$$. He also has history of drug abuse and is in the system for drugs. So he wrote to me recently telling me that "they" told him he might have been misdiagnosed with diabetes, and he wanted to know what could happen to him if he was taking it for 2 years without being diabetic. I of course have no clue. All I know to tell him are the long term effects as written in my drug book. But I know nothing about the effects when given to a nondiabetic who already has a liver problem. He is short in stature and weight is on the low end of normal. He is also very young....early 20's. I believe he is on a 500 mg/day dose. Anyway, if anyone knows anything about this sort of scenario I would certainly appreciate any guidance you have. Thank you. Candice

Alaska Nursing
WOW best of luck to you! Be sure and let us know how it goes. I will be looking into it as well at some point. Hubby went there TDY and had a great time. I think I will do a summer contract to see what it is all about. I have heard of nurses at my facility doing this and having a great time while making BUCKS. Good luck!!
