Have you ever considered home health care or a doctor's office? Hospitals and nursing homes are not the only businesses that hire nurses. In home health care, you're only responsible for one patient, you make your own schedule (I did), and it's really no stress. I found it boring, but it may be more your speed. There is room for growth. I would recommend an agency that has been around for a while because they do seem to pop up on every corner these days.

Wow! These are very disturbing stories. At this point, I don't even allow patients and their visitors to so much as curse while I'm in the room lol. I'm quick to call security for anything because people think they can do whatever they want to nurses. I've also never been yelled at by a doctor. I'm sure it's my "I wish you would"/resting b!tc# face and tone that I take with them or anyone that comes at me crazy, but they've never tried it. The worst I can think of was a former prisoner on the pedi unit throwing coffee across the room because he couldn't get his q2 dilaudid due to his bp being in the 70's. Nurses need to stop allowing the abuse to happen.

I had that one patient out of six that wasn't super needy that complained about me not rounding on him enough to know that he wanted to soda! He was a self care patient, so he could have gotten his own beverage. Anyway, also included in my patient load were two stroke patients (I didn't work on the stroke/neuro unit). Little did this patient know that I had to call code saves on BOTH of these patients because they were both becoming increasingly weak and lethargic; they both ended up being transferred to ICU because they probably should not have been admitted to our "stable" floor to begin with. My manager still felt the need to call me into the office to discuss the complaint after she and I left the code save together, lol. Needless to say, I was pissed, and I let her know just how dumb the conversation was.

It's mainly because the old CNO tried this "re-invention" that demoted seasoned nurses from leadership positions because they didn't have a BSN, only to place new grads there. The affected nurses felt disrespected and hurt, so many left or transferred. She also screwed nurses over by taking over their holiday schedule. She just wasn't pro-nursing. Luckily, Mary Jo has been working at TCH for forever and she canceled the "re-invent."

(Sorry for the long post) Wow, this is exactly what I needed to see today. I'm in my first few months of med-surg nursing and I've had 2 awful days in a row(I feel that most of my days kind of suck, but getting off at 9 and 10 is especially annoying). I've been thinking about quitting since 4pm yesterday, after getting 2 admits within an hour of each other, while having a patient that was becoming increasingly weak on the left side. With surgery consults and scans ordered. I also had 2 patients going and coming from surgery. (I don't think it sounds too bad either, but it was everything all at once). I was angry at the charge nurse and house supervisor because it seems like they don't care about the load that the nurses have. They just want to fill beds. I never thought I'd be one of those nurses that cried, but I hid in the bathroom and did just that after my director told me about another patient feeling neglected by me. I still hate med-surg, my heart is in pediatrics, but for some reason this counts more towards experience for continuing school. Anyway, thanks for this post, I'm fighting tears just typing all this right now. I'll hang in there

I graduated from the transition program at South. It's part time (1 day class, 1 day clinical). Are you inquiring about the LVN/ paramedic to RN or the regular transition?

Thank you! My mom has been a pedi nurse for forever, so I've always been comfortable around medically fragile children. She's also in the "I don't feel like going back to school" club. I understand because the prereqs alone take time, and all of her children are grown now lol. I know my chances will increase significantly with my experience and a BSN on top, so I'm hopeful. I can't wait to start....and finish school.

Congrats! I live in Houston. I know it's 2 semesters, and I counted 10 classes. I had no idea we'd be done by December, I was thinking Spring. WOW! We will definitely be busy. I received my ADN in May and I'm working in the home care setting now. I'm tired of it, but it's great for school. My love is pediatrics, so of course, my dream job is Texas Children's.
