I know no one responded to my post but i just wanted to give an update in case someone else finds it helpful one day. My positive test was for a prescription that I am on that my case manager verified. So it wasn't the cleaning stuff or the sushi. I am relieved i was freaking out. I am so nervous about this whole process I don't want to have any accidental exposure.

there is a great program you should buy it is called delmars care plans it is amazing and makes concept maps and linear care plans a whiz it even gives you the rationale. There is another one I think by gulanick or something that is pretty good but i like delmars bc it came with a cd you could copy and paste if you really wanted or you could use the book and look up the diagnosis then it would give you suggestions from there.

I would have done the same thing unless she had a valid reason which it doesnt sound like she does. I think if it is PRN then they get it when it is needed and it wasnt.

I remember feeling the same feeling in my first couple clinicals in a nursing home (other then being a male). I work in an ER now and I tell you what every nurse will tend to gravitate towards something that I like more then other areas. With that being said you cant find what you like if you dont move forward. Long term nursing facilities are rough. Stick it out if you felt that nursing was for you enough to apply there has to be something you found appealing about the job. As far as being a male in nursing my best friend in nursing school was a guy he experienced some of what you are talking about but he tried not to let it bother him and would ask to be assigned to another patient. Men are amazing to have around to help with some of the heavier things that the small ladies cant do alone. I work with a ton on male nurses in the ER and as far as care goes I have never heard of someone saying they didnt want a male nurse down there unless it was a cultural thing and most of the time they state this before they go to a room so we know ahead of time not to place them there. Stick with it is my advice!!

In this particular answer stop and think what could hurt the patient is it going to hurt the patient if the water from the basin spills over...ummm prob not unless it is scolding but then how would you have even washed with it in the first place. If you dont dry in betweeen the toes could that hurt the patient? ding ding ding skin integrity! I understand how you could do that but anytime u come to a question like this what if not done might possibly hurt/compromise the patient.

What semester of nursing school are you in? So are you assigned to one preceptor and take there full patient load with them? It seems like you should bring to your teacher that this nurse does not seem receptive to students. You are there to get the best learning experience possible. With that being said if it is unavoidable then this is where you must be assertive without being rude. > not letting me see a specific patient without a good reason I want to see *every* patient, not just the nice ones. If it's a danger to my safety or the patient's safety then I understand but some nurses don't give me a reason. The other day a nurse didn't let me see a patient because "she had a good relationship with him" and she spent most of the shift with him, leaving me out. I luckily just tagged along with a different nurse but I felt like she was rude and offered me a poor excuse. in this situation I would say something like I understand that you have a good relationship and enjoy visiting with him but would you please let me know when you are doing a procedure or something that I could learn from that way I am not hovering over you as you guys are having a personal conversation I don't want to be in your way. That way she gets that you are here to learn but not trying to step on her toes or smoother her. If she is in the room a long time make yourself useful check on your other patients answer calls bells and so forth. I will tell you that it's not her job to seek you out and introduce herself to you but the other way around. Also many times these nurses do not even realize that they have a student assigned to them till you walk up and tell them. Yeah I always walk up and introduce myself. It bugged me that this one time she didn't say "hey I am Xyz" or anything. I had to look at her ID to figure out who she was. I dont know about other places but our nurses didnt knowif they had a student so why would they come looking for you. In most places they have a morning huddle or a place to pick up there assignment I suggest you stand close to this area so when she walks up you will see her and can introduce yourself early before she starts getting report. In my clincals we didnt follow a preceptor we were assigned a patient and basically took care of them on our own and only asked the nurse if it was something we had not done before and our teacher was not sure how to do it. Other then that our teacher was the one going in the room with us for dressing changes, med's, foleys blah blah blah. So your system seems a little different and I could see that it could get time consuming to teach these things when you have a full patient load. So sometimes if in a time crunch it is better to watch them do it rather then her waiting to give you step by step instructions (Hope that doesnt seem mean) I dont mean it like that I just graduated so i have been there as well and the nurses that didnt want to teacher our teacher wouldnt assign a student to. As far as being timid you dont have to laugh at their jokes. When it comes to patient care though you need to go in there with a sense of confidence in yourself. Remember if you are nervous or withdrawn the patient may sense this and then they dont want a student who is possibly going to hurt them or not do something correctly. I had a patient tell me one time no student is touvhing me and I simply said I respect your wish not to have do anything I will let the nurse know that you prefer she takes care of you but we all have to start somewhere I wouldnt do anything to you unless I knew what I was doing your safety adn well being is my number one concern. He opened up to me and let me work with him the next day. Overall, dont be rude but stand your ground you need to be able to advocate for yourself so that you can advocate for your patients. You are not there to be a CNA although you do need to be able to know how to do all those things so you get a respect for how hard they work and be a team player so let the nurse know "I changed Mr. D brief I was wondering if there was anything else that I could help you with" Also look at the patients orders that way you could ask Hey I saw that Mr D is going to need A,B,OR C would you like me to go get the supplies set up so we are ready as soon as you get a second. Last but not least always thank them even if they were a ***** let them know when you are done for the day and say thank you for letting me follow you around today. Maybe not right away but I find that when you do this they do tend to come around to having a student.

While studying for the NCLEX I found myself doing this although I hadnt previously I think it was just the stress of it. My advice though is just to go back to the basics think about what you would do first ex- ABC's or what is the biggest risk to hurt the patient if not done. I took the hurst review course and they refer to this as what is the killer answer. I bought a book wrote by pearson (they write the NCLEX) and I wish I would have known about it while in school it is amazing!! It breaks it down really simple and comes with online quizzes that really help. It is called pearson comprehensive review for nclex. Make sure you but the book new though because if you dont have the code inside then you cant use the online part. The book is like 40 bucks or so and well worth your money. I even noticed that I had seen some of the questions before so my teachers were pulling questions from it. Also, I am not sure what book you are using but I bought the study guide books that went along with the book. If you dont want to buy them for all of them at least do the Med Surg one (maybe pharm too if you struggle there that was always my toughest class). We used davis and elsevier for our books and if you go on there website you can register your book and this has additional questions and lets face it they give the teacher test banks so the more questions you do by the people who write the questions the better. Does your school use ATI? ATITESTING.COM also has good resources. Take your time and go with your first answer it is normally right. Does anyone have any advice as far as how to lessen the anxiety? Is the anxiety more related to time management issue or knowledge deficit. Also, I am wondering how long was your orientations after nursing school?

I was told by the leader of my nurse group that they test you 24 times in a year. I am not sure if that would help you budget at least knowing that you possibly put that money into a different account so that you know that it is there. With that being said I now have a question for yall. What is the process if you have a positive drug screen for alcohol? is it possible to get the levels from the lab so that you can see what they were and if it was accidental exposure somehow? I am a brand new nurse with a hx of a dui never had anything on my nursing license (actually just passed my boards and havent worked as a nurse yet but i do work in healthcare). This is only like my 5th drug screening and I was wondering if sushi could have possibly done this I did have sushi this last week and i read something about that rice vinegar could have an effect also I cleaned my floors, kitchen and bathroom this week but I used bleach and water on the floors and bath tub only lysol on the counters and windex for the mirrors. Is it possible that that could have set me over the limit? Should I start hiring someone to clean my house so that this doesn't happen again or could i suggest even taking antabuse so that they know I am not drinking. Only problem with that is I feel like if i suggest that then they are going to think i need it instead of trying to prove my innocence. I am so confused!!!! With one positive result do they take you out work? What is the process?
