Periop 101
I went through the perioperative course through Loma Linda Allied Health School. Wonderful specialty if you can break into it.

What to do about coworker not pulling her weight
I totally agree with the above. Jot down specifics, i.e. dates, numbers, severity of pt illnesses in the waiting area. Not only would I email your concerns, but I would hand deliver a copy to the mgr. it totally breaks my heart that someone like this is in the medical field with her lack of empathy and compassion for people. God forbid one of our loved ones was in the waiting room with a massive MI, dissecting aortic aneurysm, or such!

How in this world do you ever get 1 year experience?
I worked for Sutter Center for Psychiatry for almost 9 years in Sacramento. Pay and benefits are good, but like you, I put in hundreds of applications in for other in-house positions. After speaking with one particular RN in the Endo dept at Sutter, they will not even consider your resume if you do not have your ACLS and PALs. Also, if you could attend their Clincal Nurse Residency Program, it would get you going. I believe Sutter is having a job fair here in Modesto this week. Don't give up! You definitely have awesome skills.

New Grad RN.... work options that do not involve a hospital
It's been my experience that having your BSN opens doors without clinical experience which is disconcerting because many with "only" an ADN like me AND experience are overlooked. Also, knowing a second language puts you at the top of the list. I've worked public health, hospice, corrections, and psych all of which I could recommend with an anxiety disorder. You'd be surprised how many of us deal with that and do well in these areas because we "have been there, done that". I hope you'll find your calling and DO NOT give up. Keep knocking on those doors. You seem like a wonderful nurse!

My patient committed suicide last night
I am so sorry you are suffering with the loss of your Patient. I too had a Patient that suicided by hanging. As a Crisis Outpatient Rn, he would come in periodically to be assessed and evaluated by the Psychiatrist. What I most remembered was that he just would not open up beyond a few words. As a fairly new Rn at the time I remember how devasted I was and what could I have done differently. Finally, I seen a counselor myself and that in itself helped tremendously. Thank you so much for your transparency and sharing.
