  1. We use the silent knight. I really don't like it because I think a big portion of the pill gets stuck on the little plastic bags.
  2. does she mean Concerta?
  3. Take a deep breath and relax!! We have all been there. As others have said please take your breaks. you need time during your shift to re-fuel, especially on 12hr shifts. you should definately be getting paid for the time you are working, even if it is past your shift. My administraton where i work were upset over our overtime on 3-11 but they eventually realized if they want their residents cared for properly sometimes we need extra time to get things done. As for the day shift being critical of your work. It could be because you are new. No matter how awfull it sounds it does happen. i would speak to your nursing supervisor or don for some advise. Good luck! and please don't give up so easy.
  4. I unfortunately had a DVT at 23. so as far as I'm concerned age really shouldn't be a factor. Is there a family history?
  5. We have had many situations like this in our facility. If the pt. is alert, oriented, then we can't remove the phone. They are paying for it. Did you call the MD? If she was in pain she needed adjustments in her medication. Could she have been anxious? Would she have taken a xanax?
  6. Wow!! That is terrible. Our facility has a few of those beds left. Will be much more carefull from now on.
  7. I say go for it. in three months there will still be a need for nurses. If you leave on good standing maybe you can be rehired when you return. Good luck!! :)
  8. I think that pretty much excludes LTC.
  9. in the nursing facility I work at an agency RN would usually be utilized as a med. nurse, not charge. But why would you want to work in a nursing home if you don't wan't to work with alzheimer's patients? There are agency's that staff only hospitals, or home care. Maybe that would be better. Or maybe MD office. Good Luck!! :)
  10. I have seen advertisements for LPN's with surgical experience to work in veterinary hospitals in my area in NJ. I have no idea what salary would be like. The position would be veterinary tech. which are more or less nurses for animals. (I worked as a vet assistant my senior year i high school) They assist with surgical procedures, IV insertion and meds, vital signs, etc.
  11. Congrats on taking the first step towards a healthy life. Have you joined quitnet.com? They are very helpfull and supportive. They track your progress on a daily basis when you join, which is encouraging. Get rid of all ashtrays, lighters, matches, and of course ciggs from home. Avoid social situations where there are smokers. When cravings strike(and they will) practice deep breathing as if you are taking a drag from cigg. It really helps. Best of luck to you!! You can do this, be positive.

Thank you all for your replies!! I have decided to voice my concerns to my DON and deal with the conscequences. I don't feel telling the cna's is a HIPPA violation because of their direct care. i also faliled to mention that the pts. hiv status is not to be in her chart. It isn't listed anywhere, except for transfer and MD reports from the hospital. Which will be taken out of the chart after MD officially admits pt. to the facility. So it will be possible that some nurses won't know.(per diem, agency)

Hi, I have been lurking here for some time now and have decided to jump in. I am an LPN and work in a sub-acute/ltc facility. I really enjoy my work and very rarely do i ever disagree with my DON on an issue. Except for this...New admit over the weekend who is hiv pos.(I have no problems there). The nurses were told by DON under no circumstances are we to tell our cna's that this pt. is hiv pos. I have a real problem with that. i feel they have a right to know, especially because they are direct care providers. Our DON feels that our cna's may refuse to care for this pt. i think that is a bunch of crap. She hired these cna's on their ability and integrity, and she is not giving them the benifit of the doubt. To keep a secret like this is crazy. It will eventually leak out and then the sh** will hit the fan!! :angryfire I hate not being honest with my cna's, I have such respect for their work and dedication to their jobs. What is everyones opinion on this issue. I am really angry at my DON, and am at a loss. Any help would be greatly apreciated.
