Staffing on the inpatient adolescent unit
I feel your pain. Try (or rather, don't try) a 1 RN:40-49+ pt (~3/4 adolescent and 1/4 child) ratio. 1:1 have a staff along with 2 techs. All shifts. Sometimes a second RN but even then he/she is placed on a 1:1. You can already guess to which national health organization my hospital belongs. I wish I was exaggerating.

Vanderbilt Nurse Residency 2014
I will be applying as well. I haven't finalized which track, though. I'm sure as winter approaches (Winter's coming - sorry, I'm still on my Game of Thrones kick), this post will get much, much more active. Good luck all!

Losing respect for nursing students
"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise...They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers." - Plato (4th century BC)

Which school is the best in memphis?
They are both great schools. I chose Memphis (so I am a bit biased) because (1) It offers a traditional college experience (2) They offer a wider variety for clinical experiences (i.e., not just at Baptist) (3) Memphis grads are really valued. Just the other day, I was chatting with the Dean of the program and a faculty member and she commented that one of the Director of nurses of one of the large hospitals in the area said (U of) Memphis nurses are the best. (4) Memphis has a graduate school program that you are guaranteed admission if you graduate with a certain GPA (3.25, i believe). Either way, both schools are well respected in the area and will prepare you for the NCLEX/to be a nurse...so you really can't go wrong either way. Good luck

stressing- how do you pay for nursing school
Work for a year to save money to cover what your pell grant won't (5550) OR rely on loans. If you will be 24 next year, you will be considered an independent student for the that school year (ex, you turn 24 in Oct of 2013, you will be considered independent for 2013-2014). If you make little-no income, you will have a EFC of 0. If not, you can appeal to your finaid office to adjust your EFC on the basis you will not be working like you did the previous year in school (loss of income; they will let you know the documents you need to support your appeal. If you have them to justify your appeal, they will grant it).

Mayo Clinic Summer III 2012
(this will be helpful for future applicants, as well) 1. 3.85 2. I think my essays really stood out (they were both high-quality and very unique - it's a gift, instructors/professors always assume I have an English degree). 3. I've had some unique experiences and good leadership skills (e.g., creating my own student organization). 4. I'm diverse (part Hispanic). 5. Also, my clinical instructor (who happens to be the toughest at my school) who gave me a reference *loved* me (previously saying I went above and beyond, using my care plans for future students, etc.) and so I'm sure the that part was strong as well. I'm was worried because I didn't apply until the last day (Jan. 15) but I guess that didn't matter.

Mayo Clinic Summer III 2012
Can't wait either! Tomorrow is a clinical day for me so hopefully it won't be on my mind (much). If this doesn't work out, I'll just have to settle with spending a few months in Spain/Europe where my cousin is going to international business school for a year. (Is it sad I want this externship more than a summer in Europe? haha)

The "Why don't you go to Med School" Question
my clinical instructor actually asked me that... of all the people who have asked, that was the most surprising

@Haley: I'm glad it's only routine work. I went by the bookstore the other day and they do have all the first semester books and wil give you a box to help you get them all together. @Stacy: thanks for the info. are we allowed to use an iPhone/iPod touch in lab/in clinicals? There are some really great apps on there I'd love to use.

Anyone applying to University of Memphis Loewenberg for Fall of 2011?
I don't know anything about the bookstore advancement plan. However, they say they should have the books prepackaged in about a week or so. So I'm sure you could buy them before the orientation. Personally, I've already ordered almost all my books online. I'm going to go by the bookstore whenever they do have the prepackaged books to make sure I have all the right books. So what have you reviewed, material-wise? I remember they suggested metric conversions, do you remember what else? Thanks

They still don't have the books prepackaged at the bookstore yet- does anyone know if the book list on the website is complete? And also does anyone know if the lab book (Student Laboratory Manual for Physical Examination & Health Assessment- the only one, I think) is University of Memphis-specific or can I order it anywhere (eg, online)?

Suggested maximum amount of loan? Your experience?
I've been able to get through all my prereqs working/paying my own way/community college/part time, etc. debt free. Now that I'm starting the nursing program (BSN, will take 1.5-2 years to complete) this fall, I'll need some loans. Is there a maximum amour of loans you'd recommend? If you took out any, how has your experience been? Thanks for any input (luckily, the Job market here is good for nurses)

Not yet but soon I hope. Do we only wear our scrubs on the clinical day? For other days, do we just wear whatever we want?

Anyone applying to University of Memphis Loewenberg for Fall of 2011?
Got my acceptance letter yesterday (teas 94, gpa 3.92)! :clpty: I hope they make an exception for me getting into the accelerated program even though it's my first degree. I have every other class completed (upper division elective, ethics class, etc) except for the nursing ones. Now it's time to get the immunizations, background check, CPR (I know it's done in some lady's house in horn lake), etc. Congrats to everyone! I've heard this first meeting can be intimidating, just to give everyone a heads up; that's just how nursing school will be at first, trying to weed everyone who's not dedicated / qualified enough. But I'm sure if you are serious enough to be on here, you will have no problem compared to the others (ha you know who I'm talking about, we all saw them in our prereq classes).
