Forever greatful parents
I know what you mean. I get frustrated with moms who freak out when their baby is in NICU for 2 days. I want to tell them to look around them.

NICU Pet Peeves
Messy drawers Babies left laying on skin probes from the previous shift Unneeded amount of blankets in the bed that are serving no purpose When people don't understand the concept that the medication tubing holds 1mL and they run a 1mL in over the prescribed rate (so it has now filled the tubing) and then run a flush over 5 minutes (which then pushes all the med in 5 min) Knocking on the incubator when a baby is apneic or desatting.

Clinicals for RN to BSN?
I went to Downstate and we did have clinicals for community, but it was very flexible. We were given a list of dates to choose from for the semester and I think we only had to go 8 times. They were mostly health fairs and senior centers doing BP and glucose screening. It wasn't bad at all. For leadership, we had to arrange a preceptor in management ourselves and write journals about the experiences.

Per Diem Question....
Hi, I am a new pre-nrusing student, and I still don't know too much about nursing, but this site has helped me so much. I have simple questions: 1-What exactly is per diem? Is it that you work only certain days in any hospital and you get paid for that shift only, no benefits nothing? Does it mean that technically you are not employees by that hospital? 2-What are per diem rates in Long Island / Queens hospitals right now? ANy other info about per diem would be appreciated Per diem is when you work for a hospital, but make your own schedule. Each hospital has different requirments as far as how many shifts/month, holidays/year, weekends/month you have to work. It is more flexible and the pay is better (I know it's $49 where I work in Brooklyn), but I'm sure it would be at least low $40s/hour in LI and Queens. The downsides are no benefits, no paid time off, and the risk of being canceled if you are not needed. Also, you need experience to be hired as per-diem.

NYP & NYU salaries, ratios, hours.
My hospital (affiliated w/ NYP) pays $34/hour base salary and has education/certification/experience/night differentials, which can bring it up significantly. Per Diem pays $49/hr. Full time nurses work 13 shifts every four weeks, but you have five weeks vacation, about 10 personal days and 5 sick days.

Beth Israel School of Nursing
To all of you worrying about taking science classes at BI... Dr. Emmerich is really thorough and you really have to put time and effort into her class, but I have to say she is the greatest teacher I've ever had. You'll get through.

What nursing school did or are you attending?
Beth Israel 2005, ADN Downstate 2007, BSN

International Travel Nursing for US Nurses
Yes. Basically I would consider any English-speaking country. Australia/NZ sound great. I've also heard that it is possible to go to Dubai. UK would be considered, but not at the top of my list. I am open to suggestions. If you know the names of any agencies that deal with this, please send me the names. Thanks :-)
