pins....what do you think?
LMAO!!! Thats good stuff!!! I still have mine and I am proud to have it. I used to wear it on my ID badge but stopped for fear of losing it. I think a better idea for mine is to make a shadow box for that / diploma / first original license. Scott

What is a Thumper
That is horrible.........! Thanks to all who replied. I just saw the "thumper" box on our notes and wasn't sure what it was. I need to search and see if this is still around in our ED.

champagne enema
I am not sure about the enema you mentioned as far as having a therepeutic value but I did hear a story of a wife who gave her husband a brandy enema. I think he was an alcoholic and unable to have anything by mouth. She ended up giving the enema and he died of alcohol toxicity. Seems like level was approx 4-5 times the .10 limit. Please note I have not researched this and it may be a bogus story.....but interesting at least.

Texas Tech and West Texas A&M online programs....
I have worked with several nurses who have completed the RN-BSN at WTAMU. One of my friends did it online and didn't ever go to a class room. I gave it some thought but relocated to DFW. I hope to get into TWU CRNA program after I get my BSN. If you need specific information I could easily put you in contact with some people. Are you in West TX? I am from the Lubbock area.

Just Found Out I Failed
DON'T GIVE UP!!!Listen to the advice others have offered. If you want to see me do something.....tell me "you can't" Enough said. In my senior year of nursing school in my pediatric rotation I had three instructors. Two of which taught about childhood diseases and the treatment for such. The other one taught about developmental stages and Independence ~vs~ Shame and doubt. She was the lead instructor and got to make up 70% of the test. Cut to the chase:::::::: I needed a 87 on my final or I would fail. That is stress......because to repeat the class you had to wait another year to get back in where you left off. I had a lot of doubt........but buckled down and made a 93. Did she think I would pass? Probably not. Did I ....... Why yes........yes I did. Stick with it and don't let your instructor use a mind game to make you weed yourself out. If you give it an honest effort and still fail then so be it. Take it again. But NEVER give up. And may you have the blessings of a thousand monks to get through this!!! Scott

Female Nursing Students Dont like me !
Hey man, I was one of six guys in my class.......of 180 students. I had a blast and I am not kiddin'!!! I can't imagine having the problems you are going through. I tend to be outspoken and have fun wherever I go. I am the guy who hosted most of the parties when we needed some down time. But anyway......I am not there to see what is going on. It is hard to say what the problem is. I would offer you a couple of tidbits: I don't know if you are trying to scam on the ladies or not, but if you are then don't be that creepy dude. If you are someone who always has to be the one to answer the questions in class.........and always delaying class to ask some off topic question.......and try to impress by talking for hours......I would try to rest that a bit. There was one of the guys in our class who was that creepy, know it all A-hole who never shut up. He annoyed the students as well as the instructors and even the Dean. Again, I don't know you or your personality so don't take this wrong if it doesn't apply to you. Hope they come around a bit. If not, let 'em hate. Like someone said, school won't last forever but it seems like it sometimes. Good luck brother!!! In Edit: Not thinking about the one guy who annoyed anymore. First of all......I read this entire thread and I want to say a lot of you have some good advice to offer this guy. Lot's of good information. I agree with the idea that you need to start with one friend. There has got to be one girl out of all of them you could chat with during lunch or help study or something. Perhaps if you do get in good with one of them, then the others may think......Hey, it might be fun to hang out with that guy. I also agree that one more guy would make a world of difference but what are ya gonna do? Someone also posted about the guys having it a little easier in class and I would have to say that most of my instructors got along with us very well. We kept it light and aren't catty and don't give a crap if our belt doesn't match our shoes. The girls I work with appreciate me and I honestly have it easy when it comes to getting along with the MDs. I have found that some of the doctors would rather do the "man to man" conversation with the charge nurse/ER nurse. I would try to be yourself. Try to make one friend to start with. If they don't come around, don't dispair!!! The working world is nothing like this. I have been told several times by my patients that they were nervous about having a "male nurse" but they were pleased at how gentle, kind and caring I was. There will always be people who don't think men belong in the field but for every one there is probably 100 who disagree!!! I won't even get kicked off on the earlier post. Jim you made some solid points. Scott "the male nurse"

What is a Thumper
have been out of the loop for a while and have discovered new terms for old treatments. Ie: AA updraft instead of HHN. And what used to be an AMBU bag was then a Bag Valve Mask.......now back to AMBU. My question is what is a thumper? Do I already know what this is and they changed the name this week?????

silly question re: shadowing an RN
I agree........you need to take it with you. When you are a shadow you need to be as equipped as if you were on the clock. The replies were right on the money especially if there are any strange/rare sounds.......you will want to hear it and I don't especially like lending my scope to strangers. I don't have a germ phobia, just don't know how everyone takes care of their bodies and don't want to find a wax project in my tips. BTW, it excites me to think about the vast amount of knowledge you are about to be exposed to. I love when I learn something new and if you have a clean slate you are in for a great ride!!! Enjoy yourself.......soak it up! Best wishes. Scott

Hateful ER Docs
I agree with this 100%. I have worked with several MDs like this in the past and one of them stands out in my mind. He and I have had several "conversations" regarding where I attended medical school when using my judgement ie: Putting O2 on pt with 80 SpO2 after being overmedicated. He came in and removed it saying "Oh my...... what Doctor ordered this?" I kept the patient in the ED to monitor because I didn't have anything else going on and the floor was hammered. He left......I put it back on........and I will be danged if he didn't show up again to deliver a baby...... he took it off again.......still griping. I finally told him "Look, the patient needs it whether you like it or not......you will eventually go home and get in bed and I will continue to give this patient what she needs." He actually enjoyed working with me because he wasn't sure what I would say. The first time we got sideways........it was when he was pressing my buttons during a crisis. I snapped......figured I would get called on it. Nope. I would be cautious how you handle this because he may not just be testing you. He may be an A-hole......plain and simple. He may be stuck in a career he hates but can't leave due to the time invested and his age. He may just need a lady friend. You should have a medical director or someone similar who heads up meeting/calls the shots for the MDs, contract or not. It has been my experience that they meet monthly to discuss what's happening. I have written a couple MDs up on simple things they would not comply with and about 3 weeks later it was fixed. Magic? Who knows Be careful how hard you push it until you know your limits. Best of luck Scott
