Tips for a new grad ER nurse
I graduated December and started working as a new grad in the ER. I have learned so many things which I saw many named on one of the first replies already. What I would like to add is I print out my pts triage sheet when they arrive before they are sent to their room I take that in the room to write assessment findings, allergies, pain level etc so if I get pulled to a code or trauma coming in then I have my assessment etc on paper because sometimes you get more than one pt back to back. On that triage sheet I also write meds and take it w/t me to the Pyxis, and I write IV site and gage and critical labs and when the blood cultures were done and what time I hung antibiotics etc. it sounds like a lot but it really helps when the pts is admitted and I have all the info for my hands off report or when transferring to ICU I take my paper with me or if the Dr's have a question everything is right there on 1 sheet of paper, really simple notes.

Hand lotion
My hands crack because I wash my hands so much in general what's a good non-scented, non burning, non-greasy, hypoallergenic (if possible) hand lotion that you recommend?

Too young/ early in life to be in Nursing Program?
No you are not too young I'm sure many people wish they had finished nursing school before big life events like kids for example. That's so great for you to have such a Headstart. I'm 20 & wish I had started college right out of high school

I bought one on sale for 25$ @ Walmart.com because I was advised I would need one & looking at all the students they have a collapsible box with wheels or a rolling backpack filled with books but everyplace is different?

Old nurse, New BSN, MED ERROR
I'm the same way when I make a mistake I'm extremely hard on myself even if it wasn't a mistake but an accident and I never forgive myself or let it go but it's cuz my dad would always throw accidents or mistakes in my face and use it against me. So I hate making mistakes.

How many of you are in your 20's?
I'm 20 married with 2 kids & I start a bridge program this month! I felt that way at first but as I was doing my prereqs I snapped out of it because I have always know nursing is my calling & the only thing that holds you back from doing anything is you & realizing that I said let's go for your dream job and I did.

Marriage and kids
I am 20 married for 5 years with 2 kids. My advice is focus on school and finish nursing school at least ADN before having kids. Im starting this fall & I'm scared its already stressful just to think about my schedule and me never seeing my kids and if they get sick who's going to take off work to care for them because I'm not missing school sounds harsh but I'm going to give it my all and hopefully it will be enough and we have very few miss days like 2 or 3 depending on the class. We're so young you don't need to be married and have kids so young I should know. I wish I could have at least been an RN before having kids but still it's possible but we will all have to sacrifice because I'm going to be married to this program for 2 years. You can do it but my kids are older already my youngest is going to be 3 in October so having an infant would be really hard to leave at daycare or in someone's care but everything has pro's & con's. I would wait just my opinion. Good luck.
