  1. I agree with this. That's why as a traveler I left. I was in ICU and it was poorly managed. I had to wait 2 hours after night shift until they found a replacement to take my assignment because they were so short staffed. I didn't know it until 730 am when I was looking around for the nurse. The floor was so poorly run. There were so many unnecessary shifting of nurses and patients room around it made no sense. All ICU nurses are able to float in different ICUs. If they find an extra nurse to help anytime in the shift, if her home unit is this ICU they will change either a traveler or a nurse from a different ICU mid shift to the other ICU, so that nurse can work in her home unit, which is ridiculous. Then, there were this constant changing of patients to different rooms throughout the shift due to geography. Residents are rude, takes forever to arrive at bedside for urgent calls and then walk away without talking to you about the plan.
  2. Thanks for your input. I took the assignment at Stanford and I as well as a few travelers were very disappointed. Coming from Hopkins I was particularly disappointed and quit.I was nicely surprised by El Camino Health though where I extended my contract. it would have probably been where I would apply to be staff . Calif was too expensive. I am now with Mayo clinic and they do offer pension.
  3. I have my first travel assignment at Stanford in the MICU and I am so excited to work there after hearing all the good things. I enjoy teaching hospitals better. I worked at Johns Hopkins MICU as a new grad and Stanford appears to be giving similar experiences that I really enjoy at a teaching hospital. My pay package as a traveler is about the same as Stanford bedside nurses so I am not here to make money. I am from CA, this is more of a paid vacation and testing the waters before moving back. I would love to come on as permanent staff but how can Stanford nurses afford living in the area amd buying a house? Even if commuting further, housing in San Jose is expensive compared to the pay. Where are nurses with family (and not married to a tech mogul :) buying houses??
  4. Got my official yesterday. From verbal offer to official was 2 weeks.
  5. I interviewed yesterday and the manager called me this morning for a verbal offer so it took me a day. Said official offer from recruiter in a couple of days. The recruiter also said you can extend the deadline and just to talk to the nurse manager you interviewed with about extending it. Anyone starting 8/26? I will be in the MICU. Relocating from Colorado. What is a good safe town for a family?

  7. Thank you! When I confirmed my interview with the office, and they said "We will see you at 0830 for some paperwork", I also found this odd for an interview day. What type of paperwork is this? I am taking my portfolio with me that will have my transcripts etc...
  8. I'm set to fly out next week for the interview and share time. One hour with the unit manager seems a long time! Any tips on the content of the interview that lasts this long? Traditional sit down with behavioral and scenario questions? I'm just curious.

  10. @futureprovider Thank you for the heads up! Good to know. It went one day from "application under review" to "interview" so didn't know if the interview was a screening with the recruiter first as with most programs. I called the recruiting office who indeed told me they were swamped. It's been 11 days since the status changed and still no email. I thought maybe they changed their mind..which can happened I hear. Lol.

  12. I just read tips on how to interview with MAYO. To answer scenario questions they like to follow DETAIL but I didn't write down verbatim under those mnemonic. They want to see: Diagnosis Interventions Intended outcomes Delegate They want to know the thought process, how do you assess them? how you intervene Interviews at the Mayo Clinic have a two-fold purpose, according to the organization. They seek to give candidates the opportunity to learn more about the position and the organization. They also give candidates and management team members the opportunity to assess whether or not they’re a good fit for one another. Panel interviews are very common at Mayo Clinic. During these interviews, behavior-based questions are used and the SHARE model is preferred for responses. S – Interviewers ask candidates to describe a particular situation. H – Interviewers want you to identify challenges and hindrances you encountered. A – Explain your actions. R – Examine the results. E – Evaluate the lesson learned.
  13. I emailed the recruiter who replied "We are still scheduling interviews. All applicants will be notified at one time or another.We appreciate your patience." Still hoping. But im getting an interview at Johns Hopkins..I wouldn't know what to do if I had to chose between Mayo and JHH ?
  14. I applied in February and my status just now changed to "initiating contact for interview". I'm from out of state. Is this an initial screening interview with the recruiter?
  15. When I was talking to recruiters, they say the shortage is true for "experienced nurses" not for new grads. They tell me they are having a hard time filling out positions for experienced nurses because of high turnovers. There are far fewer new grads positions for the too many new grads. I have read posts where people have applied to 100s of position and got one interview after 6 months or a year. Even though the position states "BSN not required" but it is preferred, and have other "preferred" qualifications, it means that if they receive a large pool of applicants that meet the minimum requirements, they will select the ones with "preferred" qualifications. But I understand your frustrations. I have about 25-30 applications and while I have 2/3 pending review, the rest got straight up rejected even without being reviewed. I have most of the "preferred" qualifications except for my BSN which I will get this August. I am willing to relocate out of state (and I do have a family) because I know how difficult it is to get that first new job mostly if you want it at a hospital and in a specific specialization. Hang in there. Just keep applying. And network. Most of the time, it is really about who you know and who knows you. I have a classmate who was a bartender with no prior experience in the healthcare field. He also did not do his senior practicum in the ICU, which is usually a preference/requirement for ICU positions as a new grad. However, He got a new grad position in the ICU of our local hospital because the ICU manager has been going to his bar for the past 4 years.
  16. I feel the same way. I won't get my BSN til August and have an ADN and my RN license. I read conflicting info on the FAQ page. The requirement says must have a BSN or MSN prior to start of program, they will only accept ADN if already a Mayo employee but down the page, it has a general message mentioning that those with an ADN must have a BSN within 3 years of hire. I had an interview in February with a Banner Tucson recruiter (who wanted a march start but I couldnt move out of state til July so I needed to reapply closer to May). She told me hospitals in the phoenix area will only hire BSN and that the Banner in Tucson will hire ADNs. There's nothing to lose in applying but I know my chance with Mayo are very very slim.
  17. My classmates are in the new grad at both in Fort Collins and Loveland. I will apply to Colorado Springs and maybe Denver for this summer. The pay is $26/hr. $5/hr night differential and $2 or $3/hr for weekend differential
  18. Yes only ICU. My senior practicum and internship have been in ICU and Burn units so that have been my focus and where I'm most comfortable. I have only applied to ICU positions nationwide in level I and 2 trauma. I have 15 applications pending right now and have interviewed with a few recruiters. Banner Tucson was the first one who responded to me back in February but they wanted me to start march or April and I couldn't move til July so I need to reapply in May for the august start. Provided I dont get anything I will apply again. I'm waiting on Duke since the recruiter told me I'm a very good candidate but theyre offering positions to those who went to the open house first then they will look into online apps if there are any open positions left. They have offers for a cohort every 2 weeks til December. I should have gone to the open house where they do on the spot interviews. AZ would be a warmer place to move to though. Since you're from AZ , I'm under review for trauma ICU at flagstaff medical. I don't know anything about it but as a level 1 in such location I feel there could be a lot of interesting conditions. Any comments?
  19. I'm from Colorado. Applying to both locations. I got an email this morning that my app for the AZ has been forwarded to the manager. My app with MN has been forwarded to manager since March 4th but the Rochester's position does not have a specific cohort.
  20. Thanks for starting the thread! I have been looking for a Mayo thread. I have applied to the Mayo in MN and recently in AZ. My apps in MN still says under review for the past couple of months! I contacted the recruiter but did not get a reply. i'm from out of state and i doubt i will be selected, i had the feeling from reading posts comparing AZ and MN that they're a little bit more selective.
  21. Depends on the residency. I read some that require or prefer GPA above X.
  22. I just received an email from a recruiter asking about GPA, graduation date and units of preference. That's all I know
  23. I received the request for video interview pretty much the same day within 20mn but I think it was after I have sent the 5 references emails since I did that right away. Did you get the interview request yet?
