  1. It's the small healthy steps that lead to a path of sustained greatness . . . Many people will say that becoming a practical nurse is a waste of time. Keep in mind that you must never bite off more than you can chew. Nursing is a very extensive profession due to the human body being a very complex structure. Taking your time to study and practice little by little is a sensible choice for anyone to make.
  2. I want to thank you for not retiring so early. Allowing us to have you as a part of the current field of nursing promotes patient safety. New nurses are graduating younger and younger each day. Although they may be intelligent, confident, and licensed they need qualified help daily. They need individuals with years of service to guide and mentor their practice. Everyone has something remarkable to share, but it needs to be shared with oversight. Again it's a honor to embarce your commitment and dedication.
  3. Honestly speaking, the best individual to answer that question is a lawyer. Not just any lawyer, but one who specializes in employment related circumstances in the field of healthcare. Most of the replies you will recieve will be a individual's personal views. On a topic of this nature, be ready for some serious criticism. I will say this, despite what decisions you have made in the past, I wish you nothing but the best. Always remember that healthcare workers are held to a higher standard. Eventhough we are human as all other occupational workers, we are expected to manage our life with carefullness and intentionality.
  4. Thanks for positive feedback. The post I originally made was my desire to open a discussion on the topic of accreditation. Opening a discussion allows for meaningful insight on the given topic. I do not wish to be associated the writings of a scholar. This site is to cultivate a learning experience for individuals who wish to be "inspired" not "discourage and chewed out". The conversations posted here are personal views that are always open to correction and perfection. In the field of heathcare our goal is to promote wellness through holistic and theraputic communication.
  5. Not all LPN programs are expensive but both a definitely worth it. Public and Private colleges vary in the cost of tuition. Private colleges are usually for profit institutions. They tend to be two or three times more expensive. Before acceptance, compare the costs and apply to more than one nursing program. Prior to accepting an offer review price, interview students, and discuss how the material is taught. Finally look at their pass rate of the board of nursing within your state. The last thing you do is ask what is the withdraw process and how much you would owe.
  6. Acceptance into a practical nursing program is highly commendable. Partaking in this program will allow you to make a step toward ultimately becoming a Registered Nurse. The other options are good but think of your life long term. Finiancial aid also will eventually run out so choose wisely. Employeers also pay you based on your nursing experience. If you wait to become a nurse, your loosing three years or more of pay waiting to complete a BSN. It's better to be a RN with years of LPN experience than a new RN with no experience. This one year course that is taken in the evening will give you experience and knowledge of the nursing profession. Clinical sites are based on availability, be humble, offer help to all thoes in need with a friendly attitude, and always arrive early.
  7. Nursing has job opportunities for technical, professional and administrative roles for all new graduates. Each job opportunity will inform the individual applicant what quality of education is required for the position they are applying. Programs that are only approved by the state board of nursing aids and assists with meeting the demands of the nursing shortage. These programs also get students back to the workforce faster. Returning students to work promotes economic development, positively impacts family dynamics, and enhances the state of individual communities. Approved schools or schools that only meet minimum requirements are just as valuable if not more as accredited schools. Traditional accredited schools are not meeting the demands of the growing population of individuals needing healthcare. People are living longer through the advancement of new technology and pharmaceutical drug therapies. Even after obtaining a practical nursing license some students go to approved schools to become registered nurses. Some registered nursing programs are not accredited and they grant degrees. These students individuals classes may not transfer to other colleges or universities. Despite not transfer of individual courses obtaining a license through examination may offer some advance placement. Accreditation is important for two reasons at the Registered Nurse level. Reason one is earning college credit for individual classes taken to transfer to other schools. The second is earning acceptance to test for national nursing certifications after being licensed. All practical nursing programs don't need to be accredited, they only need to be approved by the state board of nursing. Practical nursing students are earning a diploma not a degree. As a practical nursing student your goal is not to attend the school with the best accreditation.

  10. Now is the time to ask your self if you can realistic pull this off without any major set backs. If you believe you can, we can proceed. Look at how changing jobs may affect your income both now and while your attending nursing school. Then think about how starting one day over another will impact your success long term. if your still interested follow the specific simple steps below. Start out by formulating a plan of action, by organizing your future work days on a visual schedule. Next create a detailed budget, and finally reviewing all possible emergencies or unexpected events. After you have done all of the above have a academic instructors or program director review your plan. They may be able to provide further advice. Organizing your time is essential to able to schedule working hours around your school schedule. It would be great to gain experience as a nursing assistant while in school. While your interviewing for nursing assistant positions apply for the working hours that suit your academic needs. Creating a budget is critical to your success. Write out all your expenses and income. Ensure that everything balances with any unexpected costs that may arise. Money is always a number one reason students drop out of nursing school. If you may need assistance with cash, please have a few sources ahead of time selected. Finally make a list of possible emergencies and how you may solve them. For example my nursing school is a hour and a half away from my house. I always leave two hours ahead of time to ensure if my care breaks down or i get a flat tire I can fix it without being late. Have a fellow student on call to pick you up if your care is not working is great preventative measure. This last piece of information is so vital. If you decide you want to drop a course don't leave with out talking to your instructor first. Then review with your program director what the withdraw policy is and how it affects your financial aid both now and in the future. Someone once said "if you fail to plan you plan to fail" . . . . .
  11. Nursing is a science that we study through practice to find new and engaging ways to establish excellence within our profession. The difference that we make in the lives of our patients begins not at the time clock, nor the nurses station, and not on the med cart. The impact on our patients lives begin at the patients bedside. When we as nursing students provide patients with simple needs such as bathing, eating, and elimination we gain their trust and confidence. Furthermore bedside manner is being able to listen to their heart, touching their emotions, and engaging their intelligence. Spending time with your patient is the foundation for high quality assessments, correct care plan implementation, and it directs your patient teaching. You may think that what your doing is not advancing your learning but it is. While your there take a closer look act as a researcher. Utilize this opportunity to engage your learning by setting goals. Make a list of complex questions that nurses around you can answer. Ask some of your peers what are your strengths and weakness, then formulate a action plan. Finally walk away each day learning something new about a developing skill you wish to master. Ultimately arrive early, make rounds with the off going shift, get detailed information on your patients, gather your supplies for the day ahead of time, and find a partner for the day to assist you with providing care to your patients. After all that is done find your nurses and ask for tips on working with the assignment. They may have ways to get things done more efficiently. Relax your a professional leader and you can master this art form and have it down to a science. (Please reply and offer feedback . . .)
  12. Many nurses accept positions for jobs that they are not qualified to effectively facilitate. There are a number of nurses who also lack the experience to achieve excellence. Some are even hired without a outstanding previous track record of assisting student at reaching academic goals. There are two types of instructors that are hired to teach, highly qualified and minimumally qualified. One is a formal nurse educator with a masters or doctoral degree. This professional is highly qualified to create, organize, and share the theory or practice of nursing skills. The other is a bacholar degree level instructor who is unofficially qualified. Their practice should be formally overseen by a masters level individual who specializes in the art of teaching theory and practice of nursing skills. The selection of the actual instructors are based on the budget of the instution, acreditation of the program, and minimum state board of nursing standards. Ultimately teachers should be supervised and evaluated based on the goal to facilitae student acheivement. Review theses websites for a more formal review Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow . . .
