I'm starting nursing school in May and trying to sort out which stethoscope to get too. My school requirements say to have a stethoscope that has a bell and a diaphragm... so would the tunable diaphragm on the Littman be okay? I'm trying to figure out all of these terms. Thank you for the help!

Kapplan Medical Flash cards. They are amazing! I brought them with me everywhere. I had to do all bones and muscles in one month, same test. I got an A on that test and an A overall for the class. Just have to study a lot! I would write the names down in a notebook as I did the cards. This just helped it all sink in. And spelling counted for my tests, so it was good practice. I'd keep going through the cards until I could get them all right.

You don't have to be a volunteer doula. You could make it your job. Obviously, you have to do what is best for you and there are so many variables to that equation. But that is an amazing opportunity that your Dad is an OB and open to having doulas on staff! That is great news! Would he be interested in having more doulas on staff? If you network with other local doulas, working in a team can make scheduling and long shifts in labor easier. I work as an independent contractor doula through a family wellness center. We work as a doula team, generally. This means we can work in 12 hour shifts, and we always have a back-up doula rotation in case something major comes up, for instance in my case, an exam. I did my doula training with Childbirth International. It's completely web based. I also attend various local workshops when I'm able or it makes sense. I took a rebozo certification workshop, which I feel was a wonderful opportunity and it has helped a lot in my work! I know of a few schools that accept doula work as experience.

Single Mom here. I started the pre-req road 2 years ago when my youngest was still basically a baby. I'm in my last semester before starting the program and my kids are 5 & 3. My daughter loves hearing all about what I am learning. They also like helping hold note cards or whatever. It's something they are growing up with. So, it's totally do-able!!

I made some notes on your list. Many schools have you complete all pre-reqs and gen. eds. prior to starting the actual nursing program. Pre-reqs generally are about 2 years worth of schooling, depending on how you break it down. It is a really good idea to nail down a plan such as if you are going for your ADN or BSN first. If you are planning on attending a community college and then transferring, look into what kinds of agreements your community college has with local colleges. This will save you big time on not taking classes that may not be needed or that won't transfer. I hope this helps. I had a crazy spreadsheet going when I hammered down my choices and plan and I'm happy to help further if you need it. :-)

I wasn't entirely sure where this question should be posted. I have been trying to research it, but am still kind of confused. This isn't something I have to worry about right now, because I still have about 2 years to go, but I always like to plan ahead some and have ideas. I live right on the border of PA and NJ, and about only 1.5 hours from NY. Should I get licensing for all three states right off the bat? I'm going to hope somewhere along the line of school this will become more clear. I'm planning on going right into grad school for Nurse-Midwifery and the grad schools I'm looking at are in all three states. So that is another part of the equation. Does anyone know if the midwifery license is the same way as the RN license? Will I need to get and maintain a midwifery and a RN license in each state that I may work in?

I did it!! I thought for sure I'd end up with an A- in A&P I, but I did really well on the last two tests and got an A!! 4 A's (A&P I, Nutrition, Sociology & Art Therapy)!!!!!

Have an A- with 2 more lecture tests and one last lab practical to go. Almost there!!!

My A&P I class we had to know ALL of the bones and all of the parts on the bones, such as fossas, tubercles, condyles, epicondyles, the foramens, etc. We also had to know the tarsal and carpal bone names. Kaplan Medical flash cards saved my life.

Another vote for Chem first. There has been a lot of chem related things that have come up in A&P and I am SO glad I took Chem last spring. I know I'd be struggling a lot more had I not done chem first.

Thanks everyone. I'm still kind of freaking out. I seem to do okay with matching when I have a word bank. But I can't seem to come up with most names off the top of my head yet and we start muscles this week! I don't feel confident in bones at all yet and now it's time to add in the muscles. I'm not sure how to make my head remember all these crazy names! I wish we could at least have a word bank or something for the practical. Or I wish we could at least take a separate test on bones and then a test on muscles so I'm not trying to memorize 100's of crazy names all at once. I'm really trying.

It's too bad we don't live closer! Dimensional Analysis is a stronger suit of mine. It takes a little longer and can be sort of a pain, but make sure you write everything out in order to see what you need to cross out/convert in order to get to the measurement the problem is looking for. I really think us schooling moms are made of some incredibly tough stuff!! Keep your head up and keep trying!!

You're amazing! Thank you! I completely agree with the last paragraph and that was the tough decision I came to before starting this semester. I'm on the wait list for daycare help. I reached out to my kids' Dad. He usually isn't super helpful, but when it's spelled out that me doing good in school will eventually get me a better job that will lower his child support amount, he has moments of helpfulness. He has agreed to take an extra weekend this month! So, I have a plan! The drawing and labeling over and over for the bones and muscles I believe will work best for me. I also found on another study guide to learn some of the names for parts of the bone, like fossa, etc. and what they mean so that way I can narrow down what part I'm looking for. That totally makes sense! I'm feeling better about this and feel I have a decent strategy plan so far.

I save note cards for main topics/terms, things that another person can quiz me on. I have the Kaplan flash cards for bones. And the coloring book... I think I'm just freaked out about the time. I even have several days a week slated for study time, away from my kids and during open lab times. It still doesn't feel like it's enough time to learn/memorize that much stuff. I guess all I can really do is put my best foot forward though. One step at a time, continue doing what I know works best for me to commit things to my brain. Panicing isn't going to help. I feel like I'm breathing a little more now. Still annoyed that the set-up of this class seems to purposefully set people up to never get an A. I feel like I need to pick and choose the top things to really learn and commit to my brain, because I simply run out of time to learn it all like the back of my hand. :-( Like the parts of the disecting microscope. I was too focused on really learning the organs and tissues, I could not remember any of the names for the parts of the disecting microscope. So I'll never be 100% student. There just is not enough hours in the day.

Yes, another A&P freak out post. I'm sorry. We are starting bones in A&P Lab today. I read through the chapters we are to cover today. And my mind can't seem to stop freaking out about ALL the stuff I need to learn, all the little crevices and lines and whatever... they ALL have names! Woah! I'm trying to re-group my head and not panic, and am trying to take it one little step at a time, but I can't even seem to figure out where to start! I'm majorly freaked out because I know there are only 4 lab classes until our next lab exam, where it will cover all bones and all muscles. And I am desperately trying to figure out how it's possible to cram that much information into my head in that small amount of time?! Four classes for ALL the bones and Muscles?! And spelling counts on our lab exams. No word banks. We need to KNOW our stuff. I barely finished the first lab exam, and I felt I knew the stuff pretty well, but I had to keep waiting for stations to open up, since 2 people were not allowed at a station at a time! Timed tests when waiting for other people is another cruel punishment of these hazing pre-reqs, in my opinion. The lecture portion right now doesn't match up with lab. We are doing bio-chemistry in lecture. Have I mentioned how much I HATE that this one class is really two separate classes?! Of all the research I did before hand, I don't recall coming across a post before where people said lecture and lab were two separate classes, basically. That would have been helpful to know while planning my schedule... I know how important it is to get a good grade. So I'm spending all of my time studying, and doing note cards, etc. But there still does not seem to be enough time in the day. :-( I currently have two other classes, and a third starts in 2 weeks. I'm also a single mom to two kids. I've read all of the success stories of single moms getting through this, and so I felt I could do it too! I'm REALLY trying. The problem is, when I stay up late studying, I then pay for it after a few days by getting sick by not getting proper rest. When I try to sleep a little more, I pay for it by getting lower grades. I feel like I'm spending SO much time making note cards I'm not having enough time to actually study the note cards! I'm really freaked out right now because I have SO much to try to study for the next A&P lecture test in 1.5 weeks, and then the lab exam in 3 weeks!!! There is not enough time in the day to properly prepare! I'm not sure where I'm falling short. :-( Feeling realy overwhelmed and discouraged right now.

It is not true that CNM (Certified Nurse-Midwife) will soon need a PhD. ACNM does NOT support the change and they have released several notices on their stance that they feel a masters degree is sufficient for entry-level midwifery. Just an FYI. I'm on the path to CNM, so I pay close attention to this. ;-)

Depends on what specialty you are looking at for your end goal. My friend is currently in nursing school and I feel that her experience as a doula gives her the background of working personally with patients. I'm a doula and on the last bit of pre-reqs and am hoping the same experience in already working with clients will help me. I know all the anatomy and physiological background of birth has already helped me in many parts of A&P, plus being an older student with kids. I don't think CNA is the only option to get your feet wet.

I spoke with an admissions counselor there in the past year and they do accept doula work as experience. :-) I hope you will be able to post here on your experience with Georgetown. They are one of the schools I am considering. I'm still working on BSN right now.

Waiting for first lecture test grade to be posted. Took it on Friday. I'm pretty confident I got an A, just not sure where in the range I fell. I have 100% average from quizzes so far in lecture, and 86% average in quizzes in lab. It's tough because it's short 5 point quizzes, so one wrong will rock you. My first lab practical is Thursday. I think ending grade in each counts 50/50 for the overall course.
