  1. Amen! I'm a new grad and I would be scared silly if I was my patient without supervision right now...just speaking the truth. You should be required to have at least 2 years experience before working for these agencies!!!! Patients deserve competent nurses taking care of them, not a newbie.
  2. The safest and wisest way to find a roommate would be to contact Union in Jackson and let them know that you will be attending nursing school and are in need of a roommate. Ask Wendy, the nursing admissions assistant, if she can help you. She is really nice! 731-661-6542 or [email protected].
  3. I think it would be a good idea to find a hospital position with a one year residency program. Maybe you could find a Med-surg position if you like hospice/homecare. Working in a hospital at first builds up your skills. This would allow you to train under supervision too (what new grads need). I just have always heard how hard it is for a new grad to go into hospice/homecare right out of school. I could only imagine the stress. You are burning yourself out. It's not healthy. You need an environment that will boost your confidence and prepare you better. Good luck hun :)
  4. As the PP said, rest up. Relax and enjoy your time with family and friends now. Things are about to change and your time will be very valuable. Time will fly by so quickly and you guys will be where we are next year. It may seem impossible but it is.
  5. Really I have don't know much. I'm interested myself!!!! I know that many hospitals in the Memphis area do help pay back your loan if you contact with them for a certain number of years...usually 2. St. Francis has a $8000 hiring bonus on there nursing applications. Wish I was more helpful.
  6. I am using Well Fargo MedCap currently and I really like it. I don't have to worry about anything. Wells Fargo just sends them the money on a set schedule that Union created (Sep, Jan, May, & Sep). I don't have to pay anything while in school (but you can). I also will get 6 months to search for a job until I have to start paying, but Union students don't have trouble finding positions!
  7. Congrats! See you in the Fall!
  8. check inbox moto:)
  9. I am in the Union program now. It's an awesome program and it is going by super fast!
  10. I ended up choosing Union University and I have not regretted it! I too graduated from Memphis. Trust me...it's expensive, but it's totally worth it. Faculty are supportive and really support you if you work hard.
  11. Congrats to you all! You will enjoy it!
  12. There are so many DNP options. Check out the University of Tennessee Health and Science Center in Memphis! DNP Options Acute Care Nursing Family Nursing Forensic Nursing Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Public Health Nursing Nurse Anesthesia Pediatric Nursing Neonatal Nursing Dual: Acute Care/Family Nurisng Dual: Psychiatric Mental Health/Family Nursing UTHSC: Doctor of Nursing Practice
  13. Hello! I'm also a teacher (2 years) going into nursing. I'm in the first semester of an accelerated program. I too have no medical background, and many people in my cohort do. Stay positive! You are all there to learn the same things. I YouTube videos and use apps on my iPhone to help me. Some apps I use are: Taber's (contains videos), RN mentor, Stedman's Med Term, NCLEX, and there's a lot more.
  14. Sometimes my forehead looks tense when I'm reading something very interesting or watching an action movie. I'm only 24, but if these lines begin to stay like that later in my life, I may get Botox injections! They are supposed to relax the tense facial muscles. Some people go overboard with those though. I've seen people who can't even smile or move their eyebrows. You don't want a dead face!
  15. Thanks y'all! I'm having a blast so far! Since a lot of my classes transferred from the U of M, I'm only having to take NUR 306, NUR 419, and Stats. I LOVE NUR 419. We are learning about nursing history, theories, culture, ethics, legal issues, and much more. I can't wait until after fall break though! I begin patho and intro to pharm. They said the intro pharm is mainly math and how to calculate dosages. Pharm 1 & 2 will be when we have to memorize meds and etc.!
  16. I think if nurses (also teachers) want respect from the public and want to be viewed as a professional, tattoos should not be seen. How would the majority of people feel with a doctor coming in their room with tattoo sleeves and mouth piercings? We train people how to treat us and perceive us (appearance, behavior, etc). How do you want people to perceive you? Do you want people to look to you as a professional nurse or just a nurse. I don't care if you have one, but I think it should be somewhere hidden.
  17. I'm taking this class now and love it! I will say that math is my thing, but statistics is nothing what I expected it to be. I recommend taking it on campus. You will be able to meet other people in your class and form study groups. Plus, your professor will be there to explain things a lot better than a textbook. I think this course would be extremely boring online. Going to class and talking about it with other people brings the math alive!
  18. I thought about becoming a Dermatologist or a OB-GYN, but I think I will enjoy nursing a lot more! Nursing will allow me to see a variety of health cases, have a more flexible schedule, more patient contact, and I believe I will be able to be a mommy and wife as a nurse, more so than if I was a doctor. These are just my opinions:)
  19. I think I would have way too much time preparing something like that! Lol I love it!
  20. I believe it is our civic duty to society to be vaccinated. There are a few vaccinations, not required in school (but recommended), that I do question though, e.g. Gardasil.
  21. I can understand where you are coming from, but viruses are constantly mutating into new strands. One type of flu shot protects against certain flu strands. If I remember correctly that's why people were concerned about H1N1. People were not protected from that strand when they received their shot. I wouldn't be surprised if many of these parents didn't vaccinate their children due to pure laziness! You would be shocked with how many rotten teeth I saw as a teacher because parents wouldn't take their children to the dentist! Seriously black rotten chipped teeth. It was sad:(
  22. I applied to 3 and was accepted by all 3. Apply to as many as you want;)
  23. Great writing!
  24. Anyways, some people who do not vaccinate their children think it causes autism. They worry about the mercury content in the vaccine. Jenny McCarthy strongly believes that vaccines caused her child to develop autism, but there's no evidence to support her thinking.
