  1. Hey, this is way after you asked, but I think the starting salary is around $69k for a new nurse before night differential. Pretty sure SBUH realized they needed to even out the salary discrepancy with other hospitals in the area.
  2. Hey there! I took most of my pre-reqs at BMCC as a part-time matriculated transfer student. It was definitely advantageous to be matriculated - we got to register earlier, and I think it might have been cheaper per credit, too? (not sure, sorry) You may find that it's hard/impossible to get into the popular classes like A&P1, intro chem, and the like your first semester, so don't lose hope. Take whatever you can get into that you need to complete (psych, for example?). Once you've completed a semester, you'll have a higher registration priority and will be able to get into the very popular classes. Once you're up to microbiology, many of those students will have weeded themselves out and you'll have no trouble at all.
  3. Classes and/or clinical are pretty much every day (M-F; some people have clinicals on Saturday or Sunday, depending on clinical site). We got a week off in August, which did not feel like enough at all! Happily, administration shifted our pharmacology class around so that we don't have to take it over the winter (as in previous years) -- we get winter term off, which is such a tantalizing treat in my near future!
  4. Complicated question! It's hard to "like" an accelerated nursing program. It's a huge grind. I'm glad I'm here -- is that good enough of an answer?
  5. Good luck, everyone! I'm in the program right now, and it's quite the... intense experience. (heh!) I wouldn't worry about the interview. Perhaps they tried it once and aren't sure whether to do it again. The administration and the curriculum have been in some amount of flux, anyway -- and my class is keeping them on their toes, in any case! I'll try to keep tabs on this thread, if you guys have any questions I might be able to answer. :)
  6. Of course that's true; it's also true that mental illness doesn't discriminate based on class. The rich have better resources, but the underlying condition still sucks.
  7. Hunter is extremely strict about their requirements, and I don't think they allow any retakes. Definitely ask before you transfer!
  8. I'm not sure Hunter allows any retakes in the pre-requisites for the nursing program, but you should definitely call the Nursing Department office and ask!
  9. No, it's an accelerated BSN for second-degree (non-RN) students. I know SBU also has an RN-to-BSN program, but don't know the details.
  10. I'm going into the 1-year program (starting next month!), but I'm quite sure you don't need Organic Chem for Stony. Hunter is... special.
  11. You know, I'm pretty sure this isn't actually a generational thing, but a natural variation in work ethic that exists within every generation. As if we don't know lazy/entitled people of all ages (and hard workers likewise).
  12. As an unlucky one-time recipient of a Rocephin IM injection, I hope it had lidocaine in it.
  13. What are you all doing in the meantime between your capstone ending and graduation/boards? Anyone lining up new grad residency spots? Working as techs? Napping?
  14. Don't rule out Harrisburg and Pittsburgh. Philadelphia is FULL of new nurses from the area schools.
  15. I'm not sure how it works for those accepted off the wait list, but those of us who were accepted "normally" got, I believe, 10 days to respond.
  16. Hey sylbee - orientation is from 6/17-6/20 and classes start on 6/23. Not sure about the wait-list notifications, though, sorry!
  17. Hi NesSa87 - yes, I'm going into the SBU program this year. It's a little hard to quantify my application strengths, but, for example, I have a previous B.A. from a top liberal-arts school (in 2005), interesting and varied customer-service work experience, great GPA in pre-reqs, meaningful reference letters (from a chem prof, an English 101 prof [!], and a personal reference who is a retired nurse and knows me extremely well), and an essay that talked about my passion for social and reproductive justice and how I'd incorporate that passion into a nursing career. It's really all about the "whole package." Make yourself look interesting!
  18. B.A. in Studio Art. No regrets (well, maybe a few).
  19. Hey NesSa87 - I think SBU cares a lot more about your character than about your GPA (as long as it's above a certain level). Write a kick-butt essay, present your passion to pursue nursing, brush up on your arithmetic skills and interview-type questions, and you've got as good a chance as anyone.
  20. It's going to be really, really difficult to find a hospital job in Brooklyn as a new grad. (sorry to be a downer!) Look into the HHC facilities (NYC public hospitals) and Kings County Hospital for psych. Good luck! :)
  21. My impression of NYM hiring for new grads is that they're really only going to hire a new grad if: a) said new grad has been working as a tech at NYM for a while, OR maybe did a nursing externship at NYM; and b) the new grad has a BSN. I'm entering an extremely well-regarded ABSN program this year, and have been volunteering in patient care at NYM for the past six+ months, but I have no illusions that NYM is going to hire me as a new grad.
  22. Gooch, you got a weird fetish or something?
  23. Absolutely. FNPs are going to be in the most demand in public health, and in underserved communities, not in imaginary swanky clinics where the clients are wealthy, fit, and never complain or say rude things. Think hard about this.
  24. OK, let's be real, NYP is a huge not-for-profit system that isn't going to start changing their care strategies because of a big donor. NYC is full of "big donors." The Kochs are just extra repugnant, that's all. I think it's good to remember just how repugnant they are, and not to immediately pat them on the back "because charity!"
  25. Hey Phopefulnurse, is that for the accelerated one-year or the two-year program? (Not gonna kick you out of the thread either way, haha, just curious!) Congrats on getting picked for the interview and good luck! As GoVeg suggested: brush up on your long division + multiplication.
