  1. I am currently in Kodiak AK. Came in April for the first time and extended. Hope to be back. April to September is their Summer time. Beautiful landscape and people. It's a rural fishing town. Small Walmart and a SafeWay. McDonald's is the only thing open 24 hours. The small Critical Assess Hospital has 25 beds. Very friendly. The hospital also provides housing and a rental car. Food is very expensive.
  2. I am currently with Trustaff. I've had my bumps in the road but generally speaking it's a good company. I've only been traveling for 3 1/2 years but I feel it's not so much the company as the recruitor and what your expectations are. I'm interested in going to St Thomas in January. Let me know how it goes. Don't expect to make any money though.
  3. I am a ADN Nurse and just completed a 6 mo contract in Hilo last November. I also had several offers to choose from.
  4. I am in Kodiak AK presently at a CAH. This is the first one I've worked in and love it.
  5. I just completed my first l&d contract at Community Regional. Just extended my contact for 13 more weeks only after 3 weeks into it to be canceled. They also let a lot of ER nurses go as well. So I'm a little bitter. All you do is you best. Make sure you chart everything and always keep your recruiter informed when something or someone into right. Community regional is tough. Very busy.
  6. I am in the middle of an extension of my first travel contract. I flew from KY to CA. Used the city bus for getting around or walked. Had my car shipped from KY for $1200. Much better...to be able to get up and go whenever I wanted.

I just completed my first contract which I extended for another 10 weeks. Difficulties were transportation, mail, personal relationships. I flew to CA from KY. Hospital was only 2 miles away, and alot was within walking distance. But if you wanted to go anywhere else city bus, Bart, Rent car, or don't go. Had to depend on my daughter at home to read mail and let my know of anything important to address immediately. I am lucky to have a very supportive boyfriend, we talked everyday. But it can still get lonely. I've met some really great people along the way though. Learning as I go. making changes as needed as I go. Love it!
  8. I am also from Kentucky. After 26 years of working at one hospital I finally started to travel. I went on my first contract in Ca, and just extended. Meeting great nurses from the hospital and other agencies. Also learning what other nurses are doing and experiencing in their travels. Also new ways of doing things. Challenging, but fun. I must have spoken to 20 companies over time, and more recruiters. Nothing beats just getting out there and start. Have fun.
  9. HRN has a office in San Jose. You might try them. I don't know about experience though.
  10. I am working on a contract in Fremont CA. And they need day Labor and delivery Nurses. I am 2 weeks from completing my first contract as well. I hope to hear soon if they will extend my contract. I like the hospital and the area. I have found in all the years of planning to start traveling that night shift if where the need is, for most specialties. If m contract is not extending I have other agencies looking since last week. And signed up with a company here in Ca. You have to give yourself all the options you can. And agree with Ned. SAVING.... have to have some.
  11. Good to know. Thanks
  12. I am guaranteed 36 hours. But the hospital is allowed to call me off 2 times with out pa for the whole contract. So that has been done. Now if I'm called off it paid. But that week with one day pay was painful.
  13. I agree with NurseRies. I took the first job I interviewed with that was ok. Was called off 2 days the second week. living off my savings. Not why I wanted to travel.
  14. I am glad you liked IN. I am a L&D nurse and hoping to get a contract in Indiana. What company are you with if you don't mind.
  15. Well, I'm not sure! I had orientation and worked the first week. Then I've been called off for 2 days the next. Only worked one day last week. And their computer charting system was down and had to use the paper charting that a lot of them didn't know either. The staff is great and very helpful. And the patients has been great. They all seem very interested is me being a traveler. LOL.
