Kouklitsa27, The NCP requires you to have at least 6 months left in your BSN program when you apply. The board doesn't start accepting applications until September/October, which would leave you with less than the required time in your program.

Hi druclair, I am currently in the Navy's NCP and I am also prior enlisted, so I can help answer a few of your questions. Where do you get assigned? To a base or hospital?: You will be assigned to a hospital that is located on a base. Bases are like miniature cities with amenities similar to the civilian world, including hospitals, offices, housing, parks, and stores. Do navy nurses live on base? Navy nurses can live on or off base. The deciding factor is if there's room on base, sometimes there are waiting lists to live on base. Does the navy provide affordable housing? The Navy provides on base housing. This is housing that you don't pay for (very affordable!), but it also means you won't receive Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), a monthly allowance meant to help pay for rent/mortgage which can be a sizable sum, depending on where you're stationed. People who choose to live off base receive the BAH that is appropriate to their rank and location. Im currently enrolled in a MSN program, would the navy assist with tuition? It depends on if you are in the Navy or not. The Navy provides tuition assistance once you're in the service. If you want the Navy to help you pay for the program BEFORE you get in, you must be accepted into one of the graduate scholarship programs that the Navy offers. How often do opportunities present that allow you to work overseas and aid in disaster relief? I'm not sure of this answer, but when I talked to a medical officer who was conducting one of my interviews, he made it seem quite a competitive process to get to deploy on one of the hospital ships for humanitarian relief.

Hello all, Has anyone had experience going to Navy ODS as a prior service member? I'm asking specifically because I want to know if it's okay to bring uniform items that you already own to ODS instead of re-purchasing them there? I'm talking about items such as the seabag, sweats, etc. I know that on the ODS website, it states "For prior service military, if you already own uniforms on the attached list, you will need to bring them." But I know that in the military, what is said and what is true doesn't always match up :) thanks in advance!

Mrs. Weddle, I applied for a VA position in June, got called back for an interview in August and didn't get a job offer until October, which I refused because I had already accepted another position by then. Hope you don't have to wait much longer to find out!

Coast2coast, Is getting an "early out" an option for you? I was able to separate early, earn my ADN, and I'm now in an online BSN program waiting to commission into the Navy Nurse Corps through the NCP.

I'm in, I'm in, I'm in!!! Just got the phone call this morning from my recruiter and it seems that happycoma was right. My recruiter said this was the official notice and I'll get an information packet about signing in, etc. next week after the holiday!

I hope no news is good news. I haven't heard anything from my recruiter. I know it's just the professional recommendation and not the official results, but having to wait until Monday? Ugh!

mwaits081, You probably don't need another person telling you the same thing that everyone else has said, but I recently (1 month ago) spoke with an Army Healthcare recruiter and can verify that everything that everyone has said so far is true. The Army (and every other military branch...) is over strength and is not actively recruiting nurses, much less ADN nurses. Such a bummer

Hi all! I have been looking at getting into the Navy as a nurse for a while now, but I'm still waiting to finish my RN to BSN. Seeing as how difficult it is to get into any branch right now as a nurse, I thought it would be a good idea to also get information about becoming an Air Force nurse. Does the Air Force have programs for commissioning as an officer similar to the ones the Navy has (NCP, DA, HPSP)? My ultimate goal is to be an a PMHNP, but I realize that will take additional years of schooling and I want in the service ASAP. Thanks in advance!

AspiringNurse19, Just to be clear, all military branches have two routes you can go, commissioned officer and enlisted. The enlisted route does not require a 4-year degree. Hospital Corpsman is an enlisted rate (job). That means they are NOT an officer and have not had a commission. In my opinion, the biggest differences are enlisted members get paid less and generally have less responsibility than commissioned officers. Officers, on the other hand must have a 4-year degree and get commissioned, they don't enlist. It's the route I would imagine you mean to go when you are finished with your 4-year nursing degree. Officer and enlisted relationships are frowned upon in the Navy. It's called fraternization. With that said, as long as you guys aren't working at the same command, I don't see it being a big deal. When you say "deployed" do you mean stationed together? The Navy attempts to co-locate married couples together either on the same base or within the same area, as long as there are available billets at the location. Without being married, the Navy doesn't take into consideration your relationship status and will station you where they need you (that's not to say you guys may get lucky and have billets for commands in the same area). If you really did mean "deploy", then you may deploy together if you guys happen to get stationed to the same ship. If he gets attached to a Marine unit (since he's special ops) he will deploy a lot more often and definitely without you. Hope that helps!

Inspiredbynavy, Don't know if you were able to read my post in the other thread about online degrees, but it would seem that the board decides whether they are accepting online degrees or not. It all depends on how selective they are being at the time.

So I think the final word on whether the Navy accepts online degrees is...it depends on the board. Sometimes the board is accepts kits from applicants with online degrees, and when it's more competitive, they don't. It all depends on when you apply. Technically they accept online degrees, but it will depend.

Thanks Elisabethm! I too keep hearing about October boards, but from reading between the lines, I'd have to say there is a board held in the spring time as well. I'm really hoping there's one!

Elisabethm, So did you submit your package for the October boards, or is there a board that meets in spring as well? I am starting my package right now and I know there is no way I will meet the deadline for package submission for the October boards.

BOSS Man, I went to Excelsior's website and noticed they are not CCNE accredited which means the Navy won't accept the degree. The Navy website doesn't say anything about NLNAC accreditation, and I don't know about other branches.

Mgntanner, Just to clarify, you can get up to $34,000 if you are counting the bonus ($10000) and the monthly tuition for two years ($24000). Obviously if you are not in the ncp for two whole years, then you won't get the full $34,000.
