hi- would a FNP be hired to take on PNP responsibilities (minus the therapy) in a psych hospital? or do they tend to only hire PNPs?

If you're in school you could ask an advisor if you have/had one. They often know your grades very well and could write up a rec.

Hey nurseyoon. Did you hear anything yet? I also applied to TJU and it did take a while for them to finally receive my application. I was calling them frantically and they said that they recieve hundreds of pieces of mail each week, so just to be patient and wait. I know its hard to be patient in this situations- especially when a deadline is near. I would suggest mailing whatever you have right now- mail that out again. I know how much of a pain it can be to access and then ask professors for recs so.. maybe.. if you can hold out on that for another week... or just shoot them an email to let them know what happened and maybe they will see the problem and write another one. My advisor said that most profs do keep recs on file, so they should still have them. Good luck with everything!!

well thanks kat & december for those websites... they have really helped me out. It just reading this book.. its so long and dense and doesnt explain things well.. just to see it short, quick and to the point on the website is very helpful. Had the first exam last night. Think it went pretty crappy- but who knows.. we should get grades back by tomorrow. I still disagree with lady that chem is easy.. maybe for you- but it definetely is challenging for a lot of us. The person who had the CSI lab.. thats awesome, i wish our school did interesting things like that. Right now our lab is some boring crap on acids and bases, I think the most exciting one we do is something about Beano. lol I really hate the lab ( I could probably deal with the class itself, but lab is a whole different story) - our labs are completely separate from the class so none of the ideas match up. Then of course the labs make no sense and the TAs are not very helpful. hmm.. Chem sucks.. maybe thats not the right attitude but what can I say, it does suck. so how is everyone holding up so far? I can say this: I f&%@*^# hate chemistry... 2 weeks in a its such a pain already.. so much to the point that I just want to drop it the class, drop out of school and forget about being a nurse... what to do..what to do?? I just feel that the crap that I'm learning right now (Kinetic Rates) has not a damn thing to do with nursing.. why do they require this class??? :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire breathe, breathe.. haha as you can tell, i'm not doing so well. Any advice on how to hang on and get thru this 2nd semester? Any good websites on where to learn this crap? anything? I really need a prayer to keep it together this semster... I never had a "formal" interview. When I read the interview requirement on their website, I was freaking out because I figured it would be hardcore and I suck at interviews. I had scheduled a tour of the school and the lady suggested that I have an appt with the academic advisor.. so I did that. Mostly, she asked why nursing, why jefferson, what did i want to do.. and then if I had any questions about anything. Shes a very nice lady and it was very informal- so I wouldnt worry about it.

hey- i am attending the fact program in summer 2006. when did you apply.. once your application is complete it only takes about 2-3 weeks to get a decision. hope you get in! it'll be hard but i'm sure its worth it!

Thank you both for the reply... Right now I live in West Chester which is about 45 mins from the city. I could definitely take the train from exton or malvern into philly and get dropped off close to jefferson. I'm trying to decide if its worth getting the apartment in philly- where it will cost a whole lot- but I will be closer to classes (then again- clinicals can be anywhere- so there is no saying that I will be close to my clinicals). The other good thing about an apt- is that I will have my own quiet space to study (whereas home is noisy and crazy). Or- I could stay home (which will save soo much money in rent/parking) and then have longer rides into the city each day. The drawback is not having the space to study. I really don't mind living at home, and my parents don't care- but my mom is just worried that there will be so much work and I will be too distracted. It will be long days, and lots of driving if I stay in WC- but I'll save money. Any ideas on what I should do? Is it soo important to have you own apartment?!

Hi! I'll be attending Thomas Jefferson Univ. and I'm curious about where a good place to live is... either in the city - near the school or in the close, surrounding areas. Can anyone recommend any areas or apartment complexes? Mostly I need somewhere that has parking and is close to public transportation.. and I would like to live somewhere that is fairly safe. Any ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hey- I'm not even a nursing student yet... but I've been reading thru the forums and just had a few questions that hopefully someone could answer: What does it mean to work per diem? Why do these people often make more money? How do your hours work when you have 12 hr shifts? Do you just work the 36 hours a week... what happens to the other 4 hours.. do you make them up later? Do you still get the same salary as the nurse that works 40hrs? What is pinning...I'm guessing this is nursing student graduation?? Are nurse practioners often employed in hospitals.. or more likely in private practice/doctor's offices? Is the pay much larger for NPs or about the same as RNs? Are NPs usually 9-5s or do they work nights and weekends too? What seems to be the hardest specialty to get into? (which is most popular that there are few openings?) Do the different specialties pay different or does a new psych nurse get paid the same as a new L&D or new ER nurse? How long can you stay a graduate nurse? How long do you have between getting your bsn and passing boards before.. whatever consequence occurs..? and last one- anyone here went to jefferson univ?? how was the program? thanks in advance!:wink2:

Hey guys! Congrats on everyone getting in! Yeah I was also thinking about dorms- but now it seems pointless... i'm having my mom look out in the newspaper for any good apartments. I'm definitely down with meeting up and taking a tour of the city! I'm just so sick of school right now.. I'm so ready to get to my nursing classes and be doing something that has a purpose. I know it'll be hard- but I think we'll also have fun stressing out together. I'm still juggling between jefferson and drexel- jeff is still missing one of my recs so I may just give up on that and stick with drexel. Are any of you planning on going on and getting an MSN?

Hi all- -pinoy- I really can't answer your questions because I also am new to drexel's quarter system. I'm pretty sure the program is very intense though- if you do a search for older drexel ace threads a lot of people say its crazy but doable. -devon- congrats! I will definitely be asking you questions about the area. I live in PA... but I've only been to philly for random concerts- so I don't really know my way around. (Actually, when I went to the ACE open house, I was walking around for about an hour trying to find out where the heck I parked my car :smackingf ) Do you know the actual numbers for the costs of both drexel and jeff's programs? I havent been able to find them anywhere. I'll definitely be looking into the dorms- I'm hoping to get a single room- but I'm sure thats what everyone wants... btw- devon- what was your 1st degree in? (mine is psych) and what kind of nursing are you looking to go into? lunise- darling where are you??? :) did you hear anything yet?

Hey Lunise- I got accepted!! My sister called me yesterday and said I got a packet in the mail from drexel (I'm at school right now, not home). So I told her to open in up and I got in. They said I have 40 days to make a decision- so thats around mid december. She said they also did have info about dorm rooms- so I will definitely look into that. I am going to wait and see if I get into Jeff (since I do like the idea of the MSN program) but if there are still issues with my app- then screw it- I'm going to drexel. hey- do they actually have dorms for ACE students (or are we allowed to live in the dorms assigned to normal undergrads?) I got the impression that we would be on our own in finding an apartment? Yeah I do like the fact that the program starts in late sept- that will give me some time to work and make some $$. Are you a CNA or have you done anything with any hospitals? I'm not a cna but I did recently start volunteering- not really doing anything major- but I do get to see the little babies . I also get to see the nurses- and honestly some of them are quite mean- but that hasnt discouraged me yet. Right now I would love to go into neonatal as well- but I think I would be better suited for psych nursing- we'll see. Ok, well let me know of any other info you find out! :thankya:

Hey- I contacted the asst. director of admissions and she said that we should expect a decision by the end of next week- so now I'm freaking out- will I get in? will I get rejected? ahhh! Well -lambert- definetely keep us up to date with any info you get. I remember when I went to the info session the lady said we pay the entire tuition at the beginning of the semester, rather than per quarter. Is this true? I can't imagine taking out almost $30,000 of loans at once! lunise- I also applied to Jefferson but they keep telling me my damn application is incomplete. Supposedly my professors haven't sent in the reccomendations yet- so that is what is holding everything up. It's quite a pain in the tush because it already took so much to just ask them for the recc. and now to bug them about whether they completed them- ahhh! (both of the professors are the snooty type) My first choice was Jeff (mainly because you can continue on with the MSN with no hassles, no reapplying...) but since everyday there is some new problem with my app- I may just screw it and go with drexel if I get accepted there first. (in that case I wouldn't have to take the 2nd yr of chem :) ) well- i guess I'll see what happens.. btw, what kind of nursing do you want to go into?

hey- I also applied to drexel- back in march- but still for the 2006 fall class. The lady in charge of admissions also told me the deadline was Oct 15, but she said that if they did not have enough applications, they would extend it to Nov 15. She said that decisions would be mailed out 1 month after whatever the deadline is. So if Oct was the deadline then we should know after Nov 15. I got the feeling from her that as long as you have all the prereqs and the 2.75 gpa, that you should be accepted. I guess a lot of people have problems because drexel requires so many pre-reqs. Which pre-reqs do you still have left to take? I'm taking Physiology lab and my 2nd english class right now and then I will be taking the ethics next semester. well- good luck and lets hope we both get in!:)

hey nikki! well so far i have only applied to drexel.. and im still waiting to hear what they say. looks like i'll also be applying to villanova, duquense, jefferson, maryland and pitt. problem is- my stupid orifice school i attend right now wont let me take pharm and patho which are pre-reqs for two of those schools, so i gotta call them up on monday and see what i can do about that. then there is jhu.. but i dont know if i feel like throwing away 50 (75?) bucks just to receive a rejection letter. arghhh.. too much stress for me! :angryfire

have you looked online on the "apply online" part where you can put in your id & password then check if they made a decision yet? are they even using that website to tell their decisions or is it only going thru the mail?
