Adult to NICU?
I've been an RN for 11 years, all in adult. Started out med/surg, went to ICU for 7 years and currently in PACU. I have applied multiple times for our level 3 NICU, have emailed the manager and nurse recruiter but still no interview. I'm excited to learn a new speciality but am incredibly disappointed that I haven't even gotten an interview. What are they looking for??

Hourly Rounding/pain management?
We have been doing hourly rounding for about a year now....HATE IT! The CNAs do odd hours, RNs/LPNs do even hours. We have a bedside flowsheet hanging on the wall of the pts room to document on every time you do your rounds. However, I work nights and most pts don't want to be bothered if they are trying to sleep (no n/v, pain, etc) and every time the door opens it ususally creeekkkksss and the pts wake up p***ed off! There is really no time to do hourly rounding since I have 7 pts per night and 1 CNA for 40 pts! Oh and another thing about this flowsheet business.....there is a column on it to mark how the person is positioned (in a chair, l/r/b in bed, etc) and if they have been on one side for longer than 2hrs then we are to wake them up and tell them to turn over! (These are not the q2 turns, they are walkie talkies with no skin issues.) Now, if I'm EVER in hospital as a pt and someone wakes me to tell me to turn over they had better move because I'm gonna deck 'em!!!

How far did you travel?
I drive about 40-45 miles one-way (about an hour give or take a few). I live in the middle of nowhere and wouldn't trade it for the world. I know the gas prices are killing me but in order for me to keep my sanity I have to live in the middle of my 12 acres! Plus the drive gives me time to just chill after a long, hard night and by the time I get home I'm ready for bed. Wouldn't trade it for the world....well maybe the gas prices :)

Lexington, KY Hospitals
You have Central Baptist, St. Joseph (Main and East), UK, UK Samaritan, the VA and then smaller hospitals in surrounding communities that are currently being bought up by St. Joseph and UK. As far as safe areas to live I think the area around Nicholasville Rd, Tates Creek Rd and Richmond Rd will be your best bet. DON'T go anywhere around Russell Cave Rd or Bryan Station Rd they are pretty scary (I've lived here my whole life and wouldn't go through there in the day time). But that is just my opinion.

Had a new job but now I don't!! WHAT?!?!
Thank you so much for all of the different opinions. I don't want to stay in my med/surg job because I hate it. I've hated it for a year. I only stayed in it is to get my year of med/surg experience and then move on to something else. I still haven't decided if I will take the ER position or not but y'all have really given me something to think about. :innerconf You guys ROCK!!!

Had a new job but now I don't!! WHAT?!?!
OK first of all I want to apologize for my rambling......so here goes (I'll try to make this short). I work in Med/Surg @ a large hospital. In the last year this hospital has obtained numerous smaller hospitals in the region, all of which took the main hospital's name. One of the smaller hospitals in about 20 miles from my house and a lot closer than the main one so I called HR to see if any jobs were available. The answer was exactly what I wanted to hear ICU full-time nights was available. I interviewed for the job and got it. I turned in my 4 week notice to my current manager and had to wait to see when she would "let me go" for the next schedule (high turn over rate, hard to fill position). So I find out my end date and call my new manager and just get her voicemail for about 1.5 week. FINALLY someone tells me that "she was asked to resign yesterday" WHAT?!?! OMG do I have a job there? I call HR for a week and continually get their voicemail. I go to this hospital after I get off of work (I work 7p-7:30a) and wait around there until 10:30 with no one coming into the office. I finally talk to the HR manager today and she said "there was a mix up w/ the positions, there isn't an ICU position available but we do have an ER one open. You can think about it tonight and let me know tomorrow." Now my question is should I take this ER position even though I really don't want the ER. My heart was set on ICU, it always has been my ultimate goal since before nursing school. Oh btw, my last day @ my med/surg job is next Wednesday (7/23)....yes this has been a frustruating month!!! Please give me your opinion because I'm thinking about taking the ER job but if I don't like it wouldn't it be easier getting an ICU job because doesn't ER count as critical care experience????

Med/Surg to ICU?
Hi all! So I've been been out of school for 1 year and working on a Med/Surg floor. I recently interviewed for an ICU position @ a different hospital. I was just wondering if it is really a good idea to move from Med/Surg to ICU w/ just 1 year experience? My goal during school was to work Med/Surg then go to ICU but is this too soon? I'm really nervous about the change!!

Med Seeking Patients
SusanNC I totally know where you are coming from. I have had numerous "frequent fliers" who have flat out told me they are just there for their pain meds. Of course these are the same people who are constantly going downstairs to smoke, swap stories w/ other patients, etc. I've even had patients who where directly across the hall from one another, both would go smoke together (of course stopping their IV pump and disconnecting them before going outside) and then when they came back they were in sooo much pain or they were sooo nauseated (sp?) while sitting eating potato chips and just laughing as you walk out of the room. That really p***** me off!!!

Jobs for burned out Nurses?
I have only been a nurse for 1 year and I am already so sick of listening to the drug seekers & non-compliant patients tell me how to do my job. "Oh no, I can't take Lortab 7.5s because they don't work for me. I need at least 2 of Dilaudid"...yeah right. And the dialysis patient who refuses scheduled dialysis who comes in overloaded and yelling at me because "you aren't moving fast enough" I think its a safe bet that if my life were on the line I would get off my butt and go to dialysis 3 days a week!!!

Have to go in tonight ....acckk.
I always have a sense of dread when going back to work after a few days off. Mine mostly stems around who my co-workers are for the night, not the pts. Yes, I have a copy of the schedule at home but it get changed so much and then you have people calling in, getting called off, getting pulled to other floors....the list goes on and on. Sorry for the rant but I guess what I'm trying to say is that if I work w/ a great group of people then my night is alot more fun!!

How long to get your ATT?
I live in KY and we have to do 120 hours w/ a preceptor before we can set a date to take boards. I faxed my paperwork into the state board @ 0730 when I got off work and my ATT was in my email @ 1030........3 hours later.....LOL!! I guess they really want me to take boards!
