Waiting to get in
I'm just going to give you the perspective of someone who has no CASH MONEY or time to waste. Why would you PAY to retake classes you got a good grade in already. The university and even community college system is already overloaded with people wanting to be nurses, and they feed off anyone who will pay their high tuition only to be neglected as they can't register for classes because they are always full. I spent 3 years in an R.N. program at a prestigious university and finally had to check out because they encouraged me to stay enrolled and pay for degrees in minors until I could somehow get into a nursing class I needed after being in it for a month doing the work only to be told hey no one dropped go away now. I say go to a trade school it's the same amount of money but teaches you exactly what you need to know and no political moneymaking bs for the most part.

Dead bodies?
When ill ones die that I have been caring for I think, thank god. And I am not religious. I just like the idea of them being relieved of their suffering. If anyone is used to this work, you understand the decline is not fun for them and when they finally let go a peace sets in.

New to the medical field, Interested in CNA work- 1 day training?
I literally get disgusted at the thought of people taking a one day course and attempting to challenge a state exam. People should have proper training if they are going to be hands on with care giving not just learn what they need to in one day to be certified for the state. Makes me sick.

CNA requirement help
There are LTC/SNF facilities all over the place that will give you CNA training for free and hire you on. Just google for your area. You have a lot of experience but places only hire with certificates etc...

Your pet peeve of the week
I also have a pet peeve for supervising nurses that ignore/laugh off important information. It's up to them to talk to the doctor not me... I'm the only one with the patient day to day and able to communicate for them at times.. If someone's respirations are normally 14 and the next day they are suddenly 32, I will ASAP tell the nurse and when she ignores it and laughs it off that is a major problem!

Regarding 2 day class here and clinical portion
I am pretty sure in most states you have to follow OBRA regulations to become a CNA which requires so many in class theory hours and clinical hours to even be able to take the state CNA Exam. You have to be signed off to take the exam after completing the training at least in California. I don't know about other states.. I wouldn't pay anyone money for training unless I was sure it was sufficient for the state. Sounds like a scam.

Nurses Masquerading As Doctors (INSULTING)
Personally I've met a lot of dumb ass nurses and dumb ass doctors. Nurses and Doctors are the same to me, the only difference is a doctor wants to prescribe a medication knowing you in 2 minutes, and a nurse wants to take vitals get a history and make a plan for your health

Are nurses forced to assist abortions?
As a nurse you really can't dicatate patient's care plan.. if they want an abortion you just have to assist medically. Your judgements are out the door per say. If you really disagree with abortion and are asked to assist in your job you could say you aren't comfortable or whatever but that's not nursing and you are totally in the wrong position. The patient makes the decisions on their care you are just there to assist medically. If you feel uncomfortable with abortion stay away from that...

Has anyone done CNA training through the Red Cross?
I took my CNA class through Red Cross and while I admit it is pricey, it is COMPLETELY worth it. Red Cross is prestigious by all counts and only wants to be seen as such and they honestly offer only the best. They will refund and drop out people who they don't see fit to be a CNA, 2 out of my class of 8 were dismissed with a refund. My teacher was literally a mentor and still is to me, the Red Cross is extremely protective over the ones they like, they will give you scholarships etc. for further training and assist you with jobs in every aspect.

How to change resident with broken leg or ostomy bag?
Good questions! For a brief change on someone with a broken leg I'd support their broken leg side and let them use their strong side for support, now if they are total care I'd still do the same thing because I'd want to protect the broken leg. I'd change the brief supporting the weak side of course. For someone with an ostomy bag, I'd just make sure it's out of the way but intact. You could tape it to their inner thigh if you have to move them a lot.. but the less interruption you have to do the better.

Dealing with noncompliant client?
I have had a resident like this... I learned that asking doesn't work. You just have to tell them and hold their hand and say CMON we are gonna go get changed now. They need the assertive direction. I don't believe in GIVING UP ever, there is always something that can be done to get a person changed, whether it be a different approach or a different caregiver.

Your pet peeve of the week
Activities doesn't anger me, they just don't understand the principles of care that certified, licensed, and registered staff follow. I like activities for the fact they socialize and encourage the residents outside of their typical daily care, which is a great thing. If activities every tried to DEMAND me to get someone out of their room for church I'd honestly laugh at them. I'd just suggest we can try and encourage the pt. to do what you wish but DEMAND? Haha. No. Doesn't work like that. They have rights.

Hard Time Finding Brachial Artery
Personally, I get the person comfortable and relaxed, put a pillow under the arm. If they are relaxed it will be easier to find.. it's all about the set up. Once you get them relaxed arm straight and out, just do a little search and pay attention, you will find it easy.

New CNA trying to develope a routine/issues with other CNA's
You will always come across CNA's/people like this in any job. You sound like someone who cares and wants to do a good job, I suggest talking one on one with the CNA who you have issues with, and explain to them that you want to do the best job and take care of the resident and ask how they feel you could work better with them to provide care. It's all about working it out with the care team, if they are unable to communicate reasonably and work it out with you I'd go to a supervisor and explain the situation.

Will nursing grow on me?
Administrators and marketing are very intelligent for the most part but they typically don't know procedures and direct care. They are money oriented and forced to be due to corporate ruling. I've been on both sides, direct care nursing and corporate side. I personally hate the corporate admin. side because I prefer patient care... perhaps you could work well as a corporate liason? There are jobs you could do not involving direct care, such as clinical liason, case manager, admissions, marketing, etc.

Bullying
No matter where you go there will be people having a bad day who take it out on others and bullies.. It's all about how you handle it. As a nurse you have to protect yourself and the patients, if someone is irresponsible talk to them about it first, if they are unruly report it to someone. Bullies and people with bad attitudes truly do put patient care at risk. I worked in an alzheimers unit and whenever the nurses on a shift were having personal issues it showed in the patients, they would get very agitated.

Dead bodies?
When I do post-mortem care it helps if I talk to them as if they are still alive and I'm caring for them... such as; "Mr. Jones, I am going to turn you now so I can clean your back and get you nice and clean" It helps..

No gloves ever?!?
Seriously?! You got into this profession, you need to wear gloves and wash your hands between each patient. It is not "COOL" or "NEW WAVE" or "SOLDIER" to not wear gloves and wash the hands, it's absolutely unsafe and disregarding personal and patient safety.

At my wits end...
I've found that when I smile and be sweet with the mean ones it just makes them angrier.. I usually just ask them about their lives with no facial expression when they get hostile, then they typically become focused on their life and tell me about it and get out of the present.
-
At my wits end...
Some people are just bad and mean and horrible and that doesn't change when they need care. All you can do is give them the care you were trained to do, you don't have to be their friend or anything else.
