How in this world do you ever get 1 year experience?
Try seeking out independent community hospitals, ones that aren't part of some big network everyone thinks to check. I was recently hired at such a hospital in northern California, and it sounds like they've had trouble finding candidates even in the recent past. I'd never even heard of them before my friend referred me, and I've been applying online all over California for 4 years.

I want to start a support thread for us unemployed New Grads in California
Hello, I am an unemployed (as a nurse) not so new grad RN. I had a question that I'm hoping someone on this site can help me with. I can't seem to find the facebook California new grad page any more. Does anyone else visit this page? Can anyone shed some light on this? It was a good place to get a heads up on jobs that accept new grad applicants that I might not have thought to check for. This is my first post to this thread, so I'll introduce myself, also. Degree type: MS Nursing Time out of school: almost 3 years (MS 6/2011, RN 6/2009) # positions applied to: I have no idea at this point Dream RN position: I'm really not sure, but probably an infusion center or bone marrow transplant unit Hospital experience: None outside of school Where do you live: San Francisco What are you doing now: working as a bartender, still applying for RN and tech, MA or NA jobs I'm eligible for Favorite color: Red How do you cope with unemployment: I've stopped telling people I'm a RN, it helps because I don't have to defend my inability to get a job as often. I try to stay engaged with nursing by reading articles in the field, and I signed up to get news from medscape. Also looking for volunteer positions. GPA: 3.78

New Grad Programs: Advantage of MSN & high GPA?
I have to second the opinion that a MSN does not get you much in the California job market as a new grad with no experience. The problem is, if you don't find a job as a RN right after licensure, then when you graduate with your master's degree, it has been 2 years since your RN training. You're really a stale new grad at graduation from a master's entry program. The master's clinicals are completely different. The two interviews I went on, when the nurse manager realized that it had been 2 years since I trained as a floor RN, you could almost see the light go out of their eyes. If I had it to do over, I would have gotten a cna job asap while in school. I think that would have helped more than my high gpa or my master's degree.

Moving to San Francisco from KY
If you get hired in SF, you can probably find a short term sublet on short notice (on craigslist), and use that time to look for a permanent living space with your new pay. Because of rent control, and the high rents, sublets are pretty common in San Francisco.

Cedars-Sinai New Grad Summer 2012
I received a rejection email yesterday. I think no news is good news. I imagine those who are offered jobs will probably get a call.

John Muir Fall 2012- New Grad
This posting was very weird, while it was open, I couldn't get it to show up when I just went to their site and searched. It was only through the link from Indeed that it showed up. You should start checking the Facebook page New Grad RN California. People post new grad jobs there a lot. Its actually where I saw this. The more sources the better...

Help! My wife cannot get a job in the Bay Area!
I would advise her to expand her search to everything within driving distance, maybe 100 miles? It sounds like you might be on the peninsula, so she might be able to look toward the central valley. She might luck out and find smaller hospitals that the rest of us haven't heard of, or are a bit far from other parts of the bay area. I remember a year or two ago I found a hospital near Gilroy that had a new grad program coming up, but I never checked back...

"Old", New Grad still trying to break into the Hospital scene...
It looks like you might be in northern California. Ukiah Valley Medical Center has a residency program that takes those with "minimal" experience not in acute care. You might be eligible.

How is job market NOW for Registered Nurses?
I graduated from a master's entry program in June, and am unsuccessful in finding employment as a RN. I have had my RN license for 2 years, and now am also a clinical nurse specialist. So far I have been selective-mostly applying to acute care jobs that don't require experience, and new grad programs in more urban areas of California. I haven't gotten a single positive response yet. I would say that I don't have the best job seeking skills, not as aggressive as I should be, but I have put in a lot of applications. I think in this job market, without experience, even a Master's doesn't make the job search easy. I'm planning to keep working on my resume, and trying for acute care jobs at least 6 more months, but I do have a non-healthcare job that pays my bills for now.
