FNP ANCC Boards
Got this book by Maria Liek 5th Edition. https://www.springerpub.com/fnp-certification-intensive-review-9780826170668.html It also offers you online access to examprepconnect that basically goesover the book and gives you practice questions after each section to see how you would do. Only put in 2-3 hrs per day and sporadically. Did fine with ANCC. Questions banks were more challenging than actual test.

Did Not Pass AANP Exam (June 2017)
Got this book by Maria Liek 5th Edition. https://www.springerpub.com/fnp-certification-intensive-review-9780826170668.html It also offers you online access to examprepconnect that basically goes over the book and gives you practice questions after each section to see how you would do. You also get 4 practice exam in examprepconnect to mimic an exam to give you an idea of how well you should do prior to taking the test. Used it prior to ANCC test and was able to pass. Thought the questions it provided was more challenging than the actual exam.

You also get 4 practice exam in examprepconnect to mimic an exam to give you an idea of how well you should do prior to taking the test. I had the book but didn't touch it and just did the online portion. You log when you intend to take the exam and it sets a study plan for you on how much you need to review per day to prepare for the deadline. Studied the online portion for about a month maybe 2-3 hours (not daily) and did questions provided. There's also an FNP app that is basically the same thing as the examprepconnect which I downloaded just to get more questions for practice on my freetime. My scores on practice were averaged to mid to upper 60s. Final exam practice in the upper 50s. I luckily passed so I'm not sure if that was a fluke but I thought the ANCC exam had easier questions than the practice exams from the study guide. I also didn't change the answers to any of the 40+ questions I flagged since I have a history of messing myself up that way.

VAPA New Grad Program 2011
yes...it will say uploaded and not retrieved even if they have. When you go to the application website, it would even say that they may not have received it even though it says processed. If your worried and want to be sure, you could always call the VA. HR is pretty helpful and should only take them a few minutes to look up your info.

Your ER policy on giving rides home
Don't you just love those patients that come in and the first thing they ask for is something to eat and drink even before they get of the gurney. I do, especially when they start trying to complain that I'm not feeding them right away I refer them to the department they can file a complaint with. If a patient has been in the ED > 6 hours then I would try and find them something to snack on since its been awhile, but if you've been having ankle pain X 1 week and you decided to come in without eating via ambulance....well, lets just leave it at that. We have the same problem happening in my hospital regarding transportation. From 0830-2030, there is a social worker that is around to pass out bus tokens or help arrange pt transfer. Working the night shift, we have pt's that come via ambulance (sore throat, sprained ankle, knee pain X 10 yrs, "i want to stop drinking" at 2 am in the morning...etc.) in expecting there to be a social worker to arrange for their ride home. We tried using taxi vouchers for awhile for pts that don't live to far away, but they got abused and were being given to patients where the fair totaled > $160. Patients that were aware of the taxi vouchers, when they were still available, would use our ED as a mid-stop to their final destination. They would call an ambulance for our hospital (for chronic complaints such as knee pain @ "10/10" X yrs), arrive and ask to be fed, and then ask for a voucher to their house (when nothing life threatening is found as expected) in the completely opposite direction of where they were picked up. Personally, I never gave out a taxi voucher unless the patient lived within the same city as the hospital and it was necessary to have him out the ED. As for policy, we do not have a policy for transporting patients home. One of the my co-workers working in another hospital says that the other hospital he works for doesn't do it either. According to him, he has never worked in an ED where the hospital has policies to take patients home. In our hospital, if we have a patient that is medically cleared and refuses to leave we simply contact the police to escort them out since they are considered trespassing. I'm not sure if this applies during the days, but it works at night. Sorry I ended up ranting as well but you brought up a topic that's pretty near and dear to my heart...hope I was able to answer your questions.

VAPA New Grad Program 2011
Well good luck with the II. It's an awesome unit with friendly staff that work well as a team.

VAPA New Grad Program 2011
Nope, I ended up starting in the ED when they had openings. I know there are no positions right now but you never know what could happen. I have a friend who was offered a position in the ED although he was interviewed for another unit. I know prior experience counts for something, but I was referring to service in the military since the VA hires by scoring system. If you and a vet score close..lets say you 80 and him/her 76, they would add 5-10 points to the vet giving him/her 81-86..which gets him/her the job. Were you told that IICU had an opening? I believe they just posted for 3 positions for the II but they were not for the new grad program. With those positions...internal transfer may get priority, filling them quickly. As for endoscopy, not really sure how they work...don't get out of my hole often except to transfer patients. Good luck with your application.

How is the job situation for new grads in California?
Sucks here. Hundreds of applications for 1 position. Better go to texas.

VAPA New Grad Program 2011
No openings in the ED. We recently hired a bunch of new nurses recently, most from other hospitals and with experience. As far as I know, they don't plan to hire anyone new since they don't have the positions alloted. Also, the versant new grad program is awesome. It really helps a new grad get comfortable to be on their own. That's where I started a few years ago. PS: helps if your prior service since you have extra point preferences for hire. Definitely get certified in ACLS, PALS, and BLS to have an edge.
