Flash Cards did the trick for me. Mostly learn the drug classess and understand how the drugs fit into that class by the way they are spelled i.e. meds ending in lol are beta blockers. In pharm you will learn what beta blockers do, side effects etc. I studied about 1 hour a night but that may be on the low side. I retain information from class lecture the best so I did not really study much beside that. If you already have your pharm book I am sure it contains a section on drug classes. If not you may have a drug guide like Davis Drug guide for nurses. Within the book is a section on drug classes. If you wanted to get ahead look at those classes. Find out what they do and what the pre- or suffix is for each one. Good luck.

Ok a couple of years ago this happen to students who graduated from this school in Madison with ADN I believe. Google for details but what I remeber was certain places would not hire these grads such as VA, UW hospital ect, due to the school not having accrediation.

Well today we did our fluid and electrolytes unit test. Kind of a hard one with all the Vitamins-ADEK, B&C. The electro's were not to bad but still. We had to go through what foods would you give to a patient that needed vitamin B6 for instance, and the cool part due to class discussion the answer was Red Bull. Other happening in the class is we lost two more people today. They are starting to drop like flys. The instructors offered them to still take the rest of the class but would not be letting them take the final due to not having a high enough test average. I feel really bad for them because they were trying hard to keep up. I gave encouragement where I could but yeah. Anyways so those two and then another one got told she will have to get 94 average on the last 2 tests otherwise she will also not be allowed to take final. On to next week. We will be doing meds and shots. Our teacher already said "dont even think about sticking me" which I thought was funny how scared she is of needles considering she probably has given a lot of shots. Ok I will check in with you guys next week and let you know whats going on.

Well it is going really fast. I am in a class of 28 or was 28, and we are cooking right along. We have done NG/NE, Caths, Shots, Assessments(cardio/resp), dressing changes, and more. But becasue it is going so fast and we have finals I really have to detail my notes to remember for the final. One recommendation to those of you out there taking unit tests with finals, take notes down of as much that you can remember on test so you have an idea of what the final will be. Anyways we are down to 24 students as of today. We had a few who didnt pass the math portion that is given in week 3. Everyone had to pass with a 90% and I thought the test was really easy and it was a nice boost on our grades for that class, like free points. And then one lady was booted out today becasue her class average was below 78%. She had a hard road to go down and was in my personal group(projects) so I was sad for her and she was crying in class when she said good-bye. That was kind of messed up they pulled her out right in the middle of class and we are all like oh crap. New for our state this year we found out that we will be doing IV's which is cool. I have already done a good amount in the army as a combat medic so I am happy I have that leg up. Well lets see what else.......... Oh we are using ATI system for our reviews which was 500 bucks. It is ok, the book rep or whatever came in to show us how to use all the stuff which took 2 hours by the end of which we all wanted to cry/kill. Well I guess thats about it I will post again when I can good luck everyone.

I like that everybody is giving this guy good advice and all but instead of all the negativity (yes I think some is in here) how about just answer his question? I know one person said it is possible but does anybody else have more info for this guy since thats what he is asking for? He is on the other hand not asking for a moral lesson or telling him to stop letting people walk all over him yada yada yada I am pretty sure since he stated it he knows what the dangers are.

Sometimes it does not even matter what your gender is. I am a male and there is a certain resident that will grab you the entire time ADL's are being done. The ladies on the unit were all happy when I came because they thought he wont grab you becasue your a guy. I go in and low and behold the patient is grabbing my butt. In his case I think he just hates everyone who comes in his room so he does something he thinks will get them to leave sooner. Anyways at my facility we can report something until we are blue in the face. The unit managers or whoever may try to fix the problem but either way we are whats called a last resort or last stop if you will. Being as that is we dont have the opportunity to transfer patients who get out of line or do not conform, but I still put a smile on my face and get it done. Just a part of being a CNA I guess, but hey at least I got a 5 dollar gift card at christmas to make it all worth it. lol

Not saying what you saw was right but there are always more to a situtation that you as a brand new PCT might not know. I understand that hand care needs to be done @ all X's but give it a few more days there and maybe things will be different or you might know when a piece of equipment needs to be cleaned before another patient has used it and when it doesnt. Personally I have seen a lot of "do as I say not as I do" stuff, but in the end we are responsible for ourselves. You could mention it to your trainer that they are not doing correct infection control methods but as I assume you have already figured out that would not be the best thing to correct a senior staff on your first week. Good luck hang in there and make a difference where you can. Which is better than most people try to do.

Like others have said on my first day our instructors all told us at different intervals do not expect to make straight A's in this course. They explained that there have been students who got so wrapped up in trying to be perfect that they stressed out or had huge test anxiety take over and ended up dropping. Just go with the flow and dont worry about the A's and B's, maybe a little worry with the C's. Oh that was almost a rap song lol

A really good website for you is khanacademy.org, well known very good site and he will break down any math you need brushing up on.

This was homework which I received a 86% for and as I stated in the post I lost points for my explanation being to much and am wondering how a working nurse would have shorten or summarized it.

Well I can understand that some do study very hard and still have trouble as the other posters have said, I am in the boat with the OP. The majority of my class is doing ok head way above water but there are those that just want to tell you how hard, unfair, blah blah blah, this course is. I really do not know how they made it past all the pre-reqs and still are having trouble. One says oh I had to work this weekend and didnt have time to study or another my kids were being loud or whatever. And well I do understand these problems as I have both I cannot simply nod my head and say oh poor baby. After 3 tests there are already 4 classmates that are thinking about dropping out. I did try to give a pep talk to them but that will only happen a couple of times before I think you are a lost cause. And the final cherry on this little package is we have to pass a math exam @ 90%. When the instructors said that I swear half the class got punched in the gut. Everyone is outside on break saying this is impossible or calling a family member saying I cant do this. But if any of the would have bothered reading the entrence information prior to semester start it said plain as day you will need a 90% to advance, we suggest you brush up on Fractions, proportions and fractional analysis. Thats what I did and now there all can you show me how to do that. Umm no I study really hard and do math problems everynight to try and keep myself up there I do not have time to stay after class for 2 hours and show you how. Ugghhh Sorry for piggybacking just had to clear the old head a little.

Mrs ????? is a 56-year-old client withdiabetes, hypertension and asthma. Her current weight is 300 lbs. I did this for class and there was just so much stuff to add in there and I cannot do it without writing a lot and we are being told that "everything needs to be short and to the point blah blah...." Well that answers that any WI tech school should be ok. Have you thought about contract nursing? Also I know alot of places hire part time and then maybe down the road you might get a full time. I am not trying to pry but just wondering where you received your education at ? The reason I ask is I know some places that simply will not hire from certain schools. For instance my job will not hire from Byrant & Stanton or Herzing.

how much do you make as a cna including experence-15.56 3 years work for a goverment owned facility raises- none on a pay freeze for 2 years just want to know what my possible options could be as a cna, in the future and different fields of cna/med tech or option i could have without having to go to school only training or certification fields? we have cna med techs here that start at about what i am making and then go up to 21+. there are not many paths for cna as in nursing such as er,picu,icu etc etc. some options though are if you work in a hospital rather than nursing homes. hospitals may have a cna on a med surg or in the er which would probably be more exciting than what i do and may even pay more not sure. and they may train you so that you could help out more on the floor for instance at my place cna may do colostomy changes(wafer and bag) and can setup tube feeder machine such as seting the rates, connecting-disconnecting, and more.

Heres the deal. Say there are 30 pre adn students the are petioning for a spot in program. Say that you are 24 on the list and there are only 15 spots available. Admin will go through each one in order not based on merit or all that other stuff they have been trying to say they are doing now. But when they come to say APPLICATION #4 and student Jane Doe doesent have micro completed yet, shes out and everyone moved up a spot. Also I have seen many times at MPTC that a student will get accepted and then not follow through with paperwork or plain had a change of heart. Out they go and up another spot you move. I work in a facilily in dodge county where most of our nurses are grads of MPTC. I have heard from many of them that at the start of their programs they were told from 12-24+ months before core classes and then all of a sudden they get a call if they can be available for next semester. It actually just happen yesterday that a CNA I work with, she thought she was gonna wait a year or more and hasnt even finished all her pre-reqs yet but they had a opening and offered it to her. I am so happy that I work a union facility for LTC. Our house keepers all have to be CNA's. They have to do their normal duites but also need to help get up and put down residents, do their general cares when needed and help otherwise. Our dietary is the best and even helps watch residents when they are going crazy as we try to feed the rest of the people.

Pat, My experience with Fox Valley Tech has been both good and bad. The good- cost is cheap, scholarships are easily got, many classes are online, support system is good. The Bad- it will take two or three years to complete your one year degree. The reason for this is the lpn and rn program are the same. The classes the rn's take for first year are the same classes that it takes to complete you lpn. Now who do you think has the more openings for those spots the RN's program of course. I have heard that this is the same at other schools so I am not sure there is much you can do to speed up the process. Either way I transfered this semester to Marian College which has a large tution bill but no wait and what I have heard is a very good program. When you call and set up a appointment ask for a definte timeline because I did not and found out 1 1/2 years into the program that now I have to wait and wait and wait. Good Luck
