  1. Thanks for the info. Are there any resources within the system(beyond this forum) that you could point me towards regarding any other questions I may have?
  2. How long does the process generally take? How can I find out what Level/Grade I am? (BSN, 12yrs experience) Military buyback/retirement information?
  3. It's a little difficult to navigate the system from the outside. I have been looking on the different websites and got general information, but who can I contact to get specific questions answered if I am not already in the federal system?
  4. Did you do the FERS buy back? It's a little difficult to navigate the system from the outside. I have been looking on the different websites and got general information, but who can I contact to get specific questions answered if I am not already in the federal system?
  5. I just started looking. I am an OR RN. I was hoping to find out if it was going to be worth giving up travel nursing for a bit to get the retirement, but if I will need another 20 years I'll just stay put.
  6. I am a Navy veteran. I have 10 years of service active duty. Does anybody have contact information for questions I have regarding getting into government employment and how my military time could be applied towards retirement?
  7. Did you ever get any information on the company?
  8. I will be taking a contract in Lubbock TX the end of July. Has anyone worked there before and if so where did you stay?
  9. I'm in Seattle right now living on First Hill a few blocks away from Swedish. I love the area, but yes the rent is ridiculous for the space that you get. This is my second time in the city and the last time I was here I used roommates dot com and found a great living situation. knew I was going to be here longer this time so I signed a year lease on an apartment. Also may want to check hotpads dot com and radpads dot com. And of course there is Craigslist, but beware of the SPAM on there. I ran into A LOT of ads for apartments with unbelievably low rents and the poster only wanted you to contact them via text, then would just send a text back leading you to sign up for another website, big pain in the rear. If you need any other info PM me. Hope this helps.

I am living on First Hill. It is expensive to live in this area because it is downtown, but I love it. Public transportation is pretty good around here. I was here in 2013 and found a room to rent in the Rainier Beach area that was awesome. As with all cities there are definitely some sketchy areas. Even the good areas can be skirted by some not so good ones. I found my place on hotpads. Walkscore is also a pretty good resource.
  11. I am in San Antonio at Baptist downtown. I love the city, but the facility is not so good. I work in the OR. They allow doctors to do unplanned procedures without the proper consent. They constantly change what is acceptable for consents, H&P, etc., they keep adding to the paperwork they expect the nurses to fill out and most of it is redundant, tedious, and not even part of the permanent patient record. They will work you like a dog and leave you stranded in a procedure room, when you finally call out to see if you have any relief coming they will just say they don't have anyone to relieve you, and you will just have to finish the case. After they have had you work 10-16 hour days early in the week and you get to close to your 40hrs, they send you home early so they don't have to pay you any overtime. You will be expected to precept new perioperative nurses without preceptor pay. Side note: most of them have no business being in an OR(long story). My last day was supposed to be yesterday and I find out today that someone in their HR department changed the end date from this week to next week. Even though my I fulfilled the dates on my contract they are holding me to the date that they changed it to(part of another long story). Unfortunately my next contract is at another facility in their network and they said if I don't work this week they will cancel my other contract. I am very tempted to walk but my company is compensating me for the trouble and frustration.
  12. I have not been to that area but in general if you are looking for pet friendly lodging check out the extended stay type facilities. They are often pet friendly and if you speak to the manager you can usually workout a deal on rent.

I have found rooms on some of the roommate sites online. There are several out there. I would not recommend any room that you don't have pictures for. Ask the person about the commute to the hospital, guest policy, shared household chores and general house rules. I had a bad experience in Seattle when I didn't ask these questions and thank God I was able to get out of there after a week. It is probably better to do a month to month situation. If you can't find a room to rent extended stay type facilities are great. Talk to the manager, not the front desk staff. Sometimes you can work out a good deal with them.

I'm a new traveler. This is the contact being offered by my recruiter. Is this a good deal? Facility is in or near Seattle, WA- Must have WA nurse license- BLS/CPR required, ACLS preferred- 40 hours guaranteed- No call- No weekends- Strong in all specialties - no open heart- Circulate only, no scrub- ASAP start date- 13-week assignment- $700 relocation/travel reimbursement- $2000 per month TAX FREE for housing- $1000 per month TAX FREE for meals- $22.75 per hour (on top of the combined $3000 per month TAX FREE)- $2000 completion bonus at end of assignment *** Between the housing money ($2000 per month) and the meals money ($1000 per month) you'll be receiving $692 every single week tax free. You'll also be making $22.75 an hour, so that is another $910 per week (however, that is taxed). On top of that weekly income, you'll receive $700 travel reimbursement and a $2000 completion bonus after 13 weeks.
  15. I am new to traveling and am getting ready to start my first assignment in CO in a few weeks. Send me a personal message and I will give you my recruiters info. Heather
  16. I am currently speaking to one of the nursing recruiters with VHCS. She is going to be putting me in for a job at The Medical Center of Aurora. I am a bit nervous as this will be my first travel nursing experience. I was asking her basic questions about housing, insurance, salary, etc. and she did not seem very knowledgeable about her company. She seems very nice, but I know nice isn't gonna cut it if the poo hits the fan and I need help somewhere. Has anyone worked for Valley Healthcare Systems? Has anyone taken an assignment at The Aurora Medical Center? Any insight will be appreciated.
  17. It is beautiful there. What travel agency are you with that is sending you there and how did you get the license? I want to start traveling and am not really sure how to go about it.
  18. All I can tell you is as much as you can't stand those people you work with and you want to bust them in the head to the whitemeat, stay professional. Be discrete about your complaining, because you may think you are commiserating with a co-worker and the next thing you know you are being called in to the supervisor's office. And most importantly DON'T BURN ANY BRIDGES!!!!!! The medical community can make the world a VERY small place. You never know when you may run in to some of these people again, and they may be the ones you are asking for a job. I am experiencing the same issue where I work. They are rude, and vulgar. We have very ineffective management and abusive surgeons. I have been there for 2yrs now and can not wait for my contracted obligation to be over. Most of the staff have been there for 5+ years one has worked for the organization for over 30yrs. They are good nurses but even though they are miserable and complain on a daily(hourly) basis they stay. I have recently noticed that I have really started to take on this negative energy. I walk around angry, little things are starting to set me off. I am not depressed but emotionally exhausted from the frustration of dealing with all of the stupidity. I have decided to leave and start travel nursing. I always knew that this was just a pit stop which has made it a little easier to deal with.
