  1. Thanks for all of your responses! I really appreciate the insight from all of you seasoned travelers! I did sign this contract. I understand it's less than most places but it actually works out very well for me. Any idea why this hospital dies 8's now? I was told that there is lots of opportunity to get extra hours, so ill probably do that to make a little extra. My husband and I own a home in the east bay so I won't be paying rent to anyone.

  3. That's ridiculous. Where I work the nurses and techs must keep their phones on until 7:30 and then it becomes the responsibility of the oncoming shift nurses and techs after that time. The techs should not be turning their phones in until their shift is officially over.
  4. I'll be in Palm Springs, but I live in the SF area. Where are you going to be working?
  5. I'm kind of starting the new year traveling :). I start my first assignment December 9- March 8! I'll miss my friends and family but I'm so excited to meet new people and see different parts of the country!
  6. Love this!!! OP- you are such a great writer :)
  7. " I need my Dilauda".... I don't don't know why so many patients assume the the d at the end is silent?
  8. It took them 3 1/2 weeks to issue my license last year. The CA BRN is so understaffed and slow I called them after 3 weeks and they said my evaluator had been on vacation for two weeks and unless I had changed my name then I couldn't have a new evaluator. Lucky for me I had just gotten married the month before and drove my marriage license to Sacramento to change my name. I had my license number 2 days later :)
  9. Hi everyone! I am taking my first travel assignment in Palm Springs this winter! I will be at Desert Regional December 9- March 8. I'm being given $1100 a month for housing stipend but am having difficulties finding accommodations that are reasonably priced. Does anyone have any ideas or can steer me in the right direction to find housing? Is anyone else going out there this winter and want a roommate? Also, any tips on what to expect at the hospital- orientation, environment? What to see or do in Palm Springs? Any help would be much appreciated!!! :) :)

  12. Thanks everyone :) for your kind and encouraging words. I have had two weeks on my own now. Friday will begin week 3! It's been so busy but the charge RN"s are great and are always looking to help in any way. I'm so blessed to be on an awesome floor. I've found new ways to organize my day and make things easier. Red pens are awesome. I've learned that I can't do it all and delegation is important. I'm a huge fan of walking rounds at change of shifts and documenting in the patients room. We have epic and it makes life so much easier. Anyways, as always, allnurses is awesome and I'm always finding great tips and words of wisdom to help me in my career. :)
  13. I have my ASN but am working on my BSN at the moment. I also have a BA in Psychology. I am in Ohio because I couldn't find a hospital RN job in California. I'm near Cincinnati, so it's not too bad. Also, I worked at this hospital previously as a PCA before moving to California so I guess you could say I had an "in" with management.
  14. Hi all! I finished 13 weeks of orientation last Friday ( my unit educator is awesome :)) I am on a busy ortho/ general surgery floor and have learned sooooo much during my orientation. I was lucky to have amazing preceptorship and supportive coworkers. Today was my first day by myself without a preceptor.... and while I was and still am nervous ( I am so honored that I get to care for our patients), I also know that the training I received and my education has prepared me well and I look forward to learning much more and hopefully branching into the ICU in the years to come :). Good luck to rest of my fellow new grads who are just starting orientations, in the middle of orientation or finishing.
  15. My nursing school required that we have our STNA prior to beginning classes and we maintain it while in school. I worked for a year as a PCA at a hospital before I became an RN and I'm so glad I did! It really helped me with learning prioritization, bedside manners, communication with medical staff, familiarization with equipment and procedures. Now as an RN I know how much is expected of the PCA and how demanding the job is, so I rarely call to the PCA if I can do something myself. So many nurses who have never worked in healthcare as PCA's or any other title, have a holier than thou attitude and see filling an ice pitcher or toileting a patient as beneath them. I strongly recommend working as an aide while in school because not only will it help your girlfriend gain confidence and aide in her learning, but it could also help her land a job as an RN after school.
  16. Congratulations on your accomplishment!!! Nursing school is very difficult but well worth it in the end!Tips I have are:Organization is key!! I had a binder for each class that was divided into sections.Get a tape recorder. It was inevitable that the instructor would move onto next slide before I could finish writing things down. While I think it's important to get a good group of friends to study with, it's more important for you to learn to study on your own because sometimes other classmates may interpret things differently or may become leeches.Don't share grades. Get a job in healthcare because it will make it easier for you to find employment after graduation. Plus, you will gain valuable experience to help you on clinicals.Take time for yourself from time to time.Make sure you have a great support group. Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!!
  17. To the OP: I just did the same thing you are wanting to do. I graduated in June of this year and sent in all my transcripts from my schools after graduation- along with other required paperwork. I waited about 3 1/2 weeks and called the BON and spoke with my evaluator and had my ATT the same day. Took the NCLEX August 25th and am awaiting my license in the mail. What school/area do you live in? I went to school in Cincinnati and while in school I called to find out about educational requirements. The operator I spoke to told me that what they really care about is that your school is if course accredited, the clinicals and theory are taught concurrently and your A&P and Microbiology courses have a lab component. If you need any other info or have questions let me know ?
  18. @nadiamarie. I am in California. We don't get quick results so I have to wait for about a week and a half to four weeks. Hopefully they will be quick. I'll post again when I get my license ?
  19. @iheartNICUI used ATI review in person and online- along with practice tests. I used Saunders and NCLEX 4000. I also had four mobile iPhone apps I was using on the go- ATI NCLEX Mentor, Saunders NCLEX-RN mobile Q's, Lippincotts Review for RN, Kaplan NCLEX-RN Mini-q bank. I spent about a month studying. Since I moved to California recently and haven't been able to find a job yet- I made studying my full time job. I spent 2 weeks studying for about 6-8 hours a day. I would do about 225-300 questions a day, read through my study guides, and watch virtual ATI review course. I can say that doing the questions certainly helped the most- in fact- one of the questions I saw on NCLEX was very similar to a question I had seen while studying. But what are the odds of that? It was really weird and random.Really the test is about being mentally and physically prepared. I never really thought too much about this but it really is all mental! The day before the test i printed my ATT and put both my DL and letter in the car so there was no chance if firgetting them. Then my husband and I drove to the testing site. I walked around the building- was familiar with the site. We did something fun- went to dinner and then came home and watched our favorite show. We went to bed early- I only got about 6 hours because of nerves. In the morning I had breakfast and did my normal routine. I tried to relax by watching TV and talking to a good friend. I left early and got to the testing site about an hour early. I really tried to lessen my stress level before the test. I said a prayer and during the test if I got too overwhelmed I would take a deep breath and try to focus. I just tried to stay positive and tell myself that I had it- that I could do it. Positive energy and confidence really helped.
