Top of pay scale Cleveland Clinic
Hi, I see this thread is a bit old, but my husband is thinking of taking an engineering job close to Cleveland Clinic. I have 5yrs PCU Cardiac experience (BSN-PCCN) and would love to work with a great heart hospital. I saw some openings for cardiac/ tele units but they just list the floor by number. I love post surgical, medical cardiac patients (progressive)-I will do it all but the vents. Can someone help me out and identify floors/ units I may like. What are your ratios? Any comments or suggestions are appreciated:) Thanks!

Sorry, Milwaukee nurses and patients
We do not have a union. Now let's see how it could get worse???!!!! Really not a trilling place to work as is. Don't get me wrong, I love the people I work with and I like helping our impoverished pts. Sometimes, little things for them make a big deal, like using a phone to make a local call. If you have supplies you need to take care of patients.... say goodbye. Don't have much already, what will he take the lab tubes? No food or toiletries as is. If for you thought you worked short before.... get ready for it to get much worse. Hmmmmm ratio days 6:1 night 7-9:1 on Neuro can that get worse??? Get ready for major layoffs, tell your health insurance goodbye, need that prescription.... good luck!, got a pension plan.... so sorry, but it will be gone shortly. No pension plan, gone in 2008 we do have 403b minimal match. He could get ride of the plan for those hired before 2006. What insurance, I take mine online through BCBS, much cheaper. Scripts are hardly covered now. Only staff left to lay of is the "HUC"....person to put in orders. I already assumed they would be fired when we switch to CPOE. Get ready for one of the most ridiculous code of conducts... which basicially allows for patient/family abuse of nursing staff like you have never seen or heard of before. They already do treat us like crap, inner city MKE says it all. We have "real" security and a code purple is pretty common. Prepare for the outsourcing of jobs to other entities under the major umbrella of the organization this guy comes from (Goodbye LPNs, CNAs, medical record people, Bio-medical techs). Oh, and don't expect forwarning... you will arrive at your job and work for a few hours and security and police will show up to take your badges and keys and see you off the property with a warning that if you come back on the property you will be arrested. Already gone- LPN, CNA's we have minimal staff left. I draw my own labs off IV's. If you have flexibility in your schedules, like 12 hours, weekends only, etc... say goodbye. Welcome to 8 hour shifts and every other weekend and you can never get a "set" schedule to plan anything. This we do have 12's, already have to work EOW. Expect to get written up for those little things like coding a patient (you didn't get pre-approved overtime for that code... shame on you). Can't do OT now either or will be written up. Expect to model your organization like the airlines... because they have the best safety record. (Forget the fact that the services they provide are terrible.) Our service sucks, sorry to say. When most of the pts are homeless, on poverty level what extra frills can we provide? We are kind and fun, but there are no extras. Expect your morale to plunge to a level you didn't know existed, and then some more. Expect to be told on a daily basis how horrible and terrible nurses and your nursing care is. We shall see, itsn't too great now. Pts tell us daily how horrible we are. Better bring your own toiletries and food, we have no extras. Expect to shut up, smile, and take it! Keep this in mind... like all CEOs he will be a short timer... he will wreck havoc, and go home with a smile. I do, daily:)

Concordia RN to BSN?
I did the @home online. Typically, UW is cheaper than private. I had a few new grads in my classes without jobs. By easy, I mean super easy. For example, at WWTC I had to write a windshield paper for community, same paper for UWM. Pharm was writing a paper on a case presented. If you want to enrich your education, UWM or any of the @home, are repeats of all your WWTC work. All of my classes transfered in, the UW schools have an agreement with the WI tech colleges. Too bad you can't find employment, my job paid for all my BSN courses....over 5 years:) Slow, but free this way! Good luck!

Moving to Milwaukee.. help!
I agree, this is also what I have noticed since 2002. I have worked for Aurora ICU, CSM ICU and ProHealth Progressive Unit and there is no incentive or additional pay for BSN. CSM will lock you in a RN 2 position without a BSN but will hire you, including Froedtert-I turned them down twice (LOW pay). The VA may be more particular.

Medications Commonly Used on a Cardiac Unit
Effient and Plavix. Looking up core measures for HF and AMI are a good way to identify importance, this will help you think critically. http://www.jointcommission.org/core_measure_set/

RN salaries in North Carolina?
Hi! I can't PM...haven't met the quota:) I am wondering if you have any thoughts on what hospital has a good cardiac unit (progressive/stepdown or procedures)? I am interested in fair ratios (4:1- would be nice), salary not so much. Any advice would be helpful:) Thanks!

Where will you be in MKE? I have worked for three of the many providers (hospital) and can tell you which ones I like or if you are looking at a facility I can tell you what I have heard? Also, let me know you're area of interest The VA has great benefits and pay, but hard to get in. Everyone likes working for them that I know Aurora-I liked it very much. Large, good pay, as a new grad you're very likely to find a job in one of their many locations. I worked at St. Luke's a bit at Sinai. I would go back. Columbia St. Mary's. I worked here and left due to the merger. Don't look for a position until after Oct. Nov. they will have merged and can figure out the staffing. Bad ratios/ no CNA assist. Pays well, overall, the people are nice. ProHealth in Waukesha-good ratios, nice support staff. Pays less than the above mentioned. My favorite overall. Froedtert--good ratios, nice staff, good support. Pay is okay. I didn't like the 7-10 our shifts (7/70). Way too old for that now. They will hire new grads also. Good Luck!

What I wish I had known/asked before....
In the spirit of graduation, new graduates, and interviews, I thought we could share what we should of, could have and would kick ourselves for not asking before we were hired! My top five: 1. Was told the pt. ratio was 1:6...should have asked to see some old assignments...it is more like 1:9...my manager must have been seeing that 6 upside down! What is the aide ratio? I have 9 pts, the aides are working with 15-19 depending on the shift...and they wonder why our fall rate has increased--(I work in neuro)! 2. Self scheduling...sure my manager said we had it but when she changes the schedule and you really never get any days/shifts desired is this what I would have done to myself? Better yet when she changes the schedule after it is posted and 'forgets' to tell you.... 3. Really should have asked more questions regarding additional "requirements"...there are the monthly meetings, additional education (hey, I'm all for education but pay me for it...stroke module took everyone 4 hours to complete and we only received 1hr pay)...the hospital competencies ..etc. I swear this is a full time job itself! 4. Ahh my favorite...orientation. "You will receive 3 months orientation from our best nurses..." Okay in reality, the best nurses had only been working 1 year. How great can you be when you just started yourself? As for the 3 months, try more like 1 month and really "you should be able to do this yourself"....I would only apply to places that have set programs and preceptors with experience. Anyone one had a great orientation let me know....I would be happy to relocate.... 5. Transfers. Sure there are postings, I apply but never get called. I put in for 42 transfers and finally called HR. Turns out my manager told them I was not interested. I had even asked her prior if she was blocking me....heavens no. My floor has needs so why would they let me go..... I really should have asked more detailed, in depth questions but I was young...desperate (there is no shortage in WI)...I actually love my job, love the people I work with but cannot stand where I work. So new graduates get every detail you can! Good luck.
