moving from psych to medsurg-NERVOUS!!
I have been working on an inpatient psych setting at a hospital and have been lucky enough to be offered a position on a medsurg floor. I jumped at the chance as I realize that I need this experience to do anything else. I have no acute care experience and am really looking forward to getting some. So my question is, what should I be studying up on? What are the most important things to know first being on the floor? I know a lot of it is repetition and learning on the job but I would like to feel somewhat prepared for what I am walking in on.. Any advice is greatly appreciated! I am really excited and can't wait to start!

Preceptor from hell- no more killing with kindness
I don't understand why management makes people like this precept. It's bad for the newbie and ultimately the hospital and profession of nursing. Everyone is unhappy in the end-

How aggressive is your follow-up?
I think you should send a follow up letter, it shows that you are truly interested and serious about getting the position. I have interviewed twice since graduating, wrote letters both times, and was offered both positions. Good luck to you!

Magnet status? Hospitals choosing BSN new grads. Important!!!! over ADN??

Leaking AAA
My grandfather died of a AAA. He also decided against surgery and it was like waiting for a ticking time bomb to explode which it did six months after being diagnosed. He just didn't want to go through all the trauma of surgery and such at his age, really can't blame him. We miss him every day!

How old were you when you finished nursing school?

starting job on alcohol unit
Hi everyone! I was just offered a position on an alcohol rehab unit at a local hospital and I accepted it. I am a new grad and i figured it would be my foot in the door to a hospital but I am also hoping to really love this type of nursing. Anyone have any words of wisdom for the new grad on this kind of unit? It would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You Email After Interview Question
You should absolutely send one and you should send it the day of your interview. I have interviewed twice since i graduated, sent a note both times, and was offered both positions. The HR woman actually thanked me for sending one. It will make you stand out and let them know how serious you are about the job! Good luck!

Did any of you NOT take a NCLEX prep course??
I did not take a course, passed on my first try but if I had to do over again, would have taken the Kaplan review course. You can't be too prepared for this and if you take the course you will be guaranteed to pass. Good luck to you!

Just lost my hearing in one ear- now what?
I don't think being hearing impaired changes how you are as a nurse. It is something you have to deal with, grieve, and then move on. It should not and will not define you unless you let it. I speak from experience and believe me, it is all about how you approach the situation. Good luck!

LPN goin beyond scope of practice
In my state(NY) LPN's are absolutely not allowed to assess or discharge patients. They are allowed to collect data and consult with the RN about what they have collected but the RN has the final say. I'm sure there are a lot of great LPN's out there but if you are in NY and want to assess, have to become an RN!

Anxious about upcoming Nclex Rn exam,Need suggestion
Did you take a reveiw course like Kaplan? I highly suggest that especially if you didn't pass the first time. Do not be embarrassed either, you worked hard to get to this point, go in confident and take your time. One question at a time. Good luck!!
