Wrong , you don't have to follow orders if they aren't appropriate . OP stated patient was hypotensive, she could've called the MD and ask for clarification before administering. The way you come off is that you must follow MD orders no matter how ridiculous they are . Sorry , I've refused to follow orders and havent been taken to any board , I had a patient with an order for 60 of lantus with a wnl bg , called to clarify told me to give I refuse, charge gave and pt bg tanked to 40 . That's the difference between following orders needlessly and actually critically thinking .

Reading through this thread I'm just disgusted on how nurses are bashing the OP, it's obvious OP is burnt out from working the floor. I won't judge you since I use to work a post op unit and dealt with the same issues and see your side . I wouldn't ask other nurses for their opinion since this profession has become so jaded , I worked with physicians and don't see this type of calling out someone and putting them down behavior as I see in nursing. OP, I understand you are concerned for your license since people don't die from pain but will die from respiratory depression í ½í±Œí ¼í¿½ I suggest you get out of Med Surg floor and go into a specialty where you can get some respect .

My advice would be to do as many questions as possible and look at the rationales. It's all about how to pick and see what the questions ask. All the knowledge is in your head and to review everything would be too much information. Focus on your weak areas. I used Saunders comprehensive PN book and cd and did 150 + questions a day for 2 weeks and passed within 90 questions. If you need the material private message me your email.

Hi Helen , I went though the same frustration of not being able to find work after graduation. It took almost 8 months to find work. Now that the holidays are approaching a lot of facilities are looking for per diem nurses to cover for their on staff vacations call outs etc. apply everywhere to every facility even those who have no online site you go personally to fill out an application. I got my first job through a staffing agency try these as well some are willing to take on new grads. Persistence is key , I am also half way through getting my RN. Also try home health care , some places are willing to take on new grads. We need all the experience we can get once that RN is next to our names. Per diem work = flexibility for school. I also wanted to add that to use your cnas to your advantage. They are your eyes and ears on the floor , help them and they will return the favor. It's impossible to check all the v/s while doing med pass , that's why you can delegate these task to your cna but make sure they are competent in checking v/s first. They will apply the creams and lotions for you if they feel you are a team player and not just a pushy nurse. Best of luck in your career and it gets better.

Irene it will get better. I was in your shoes once , new grad at a facility with only 3 day orientation facing the same problems. Was floated around dif floors with 40 pts only I as charge nurse and an RN supervisor who was gone most of the time on other floors. After 6 weeks you should be getting your routine down pack , buy a notepad to plan out the day and when to do your finger sticks , med pass , treatments ect. By the time you know it everything is done with time to document. The issues you described bothered me as well and I applied to a better facility and was hired having obtained experience. Protecting your license is important gain your 6 months experience and look elsewhere , these places have high turnover and don't care for retaining quality nurses just having someone to cover their short staffing.

Study from the NLN book its really good, I scored really high in the science portion studying from that book. The Math is algebra and geometry high school level math and English was substituting words knowing the meaning and word roots. I didn't get into that portion of the book and didn't score great on those sections. Be ontop of Rockland after you take the exam and make sure they give you an answer on receiving all your paperwork and having everything. I wasn't on top of them applying for Spring 2013 and last minute got a letter that my NLN scores were not submitted when clinicals were already filled up. I ended up going to another school instead so Good Luck in getting in and be persistent with them.

It is the same program you just get advance standing as an LPN and can apply at any semester, it's not a different program. I can compare because I was told I was jumping the gun, wouldn't he be jumping the gun by applying as well?? The requirements are the same, we both have to take an NLN and take the same classes in order to apply.

I have to disagree about the preferential treatment for being minority statement. I recently applied to an LPN to RN bridge and let me tell you the nursing department is majority white. They have preference for their own applicants and don't favor minority applicants as much. I was told by a nursing faculty that I was "Jumping the gun" by fulfilling all the requirements and applying while a white student who was applying to the program without advance standing as an lpn was given the royal treatment.

I did a trade school and now im regretting it so much. I was half way done with my PCT when I applied to an LPN school and got accepted. Fast forward a year 1/2 and Im 23K in debt and no job! I been 3 months out of school and only 1 job interview , no one wants to hire any new grads and the so called "career services" just pulls stuff from the net. For 23k I expected more atleast tangable leads , I feel like I wasted a year of intense study and a lot of stress , money , and time to end up with a swift kick in the nuts. I could've done PCT and work in a hospital while going for my RN. My advice for anyone who is considering the LPN route , do it at a Community College where credits will transfer into an RN not a trade school where the credits dont mean squat. Now I will have to work as a CNA with 9 dollars an hr. Thats my 2 cents.

Don't get your license in NY. The job market for LPNs is horrible out here, I have my LPN and im 2 months into looking for work with no success. I speak Spanish fluently, did my IV, BCLS cert classes, and have prior CNA experience but no facilities want to hire new grads. My friend is having some success and she got her license in NJ so the job market is not as tough out her way. If possible go for your BSN because I am regretting doing the LPN route. The jobs aren't there and I feel like I wasted a lot of money and time when I am doing my pre-reqs now I could've already been in a BSN program.

Uh no if you read my post I said I was given an iv while standing because the person didnt want to be bothered with doing it the proper way. I still have pictures and it's still there if you want to see redhead_nurse. Smdh

Mita I'm in the same situation . Just got my lpn license and started my pre reqs for rn . No luck in finding an lpn job every place wants 1 yr experience.

I have to disagree with the LPNs being lazy and having more credentials meaning your better statement. I know a lot of RNs who are rotten and lazy and could give 2 craps about the patient, I live in NYC and in the city hospital you see it all the time. Nurses giving patients IV while standing up ( Been done and have a nasty bruise from it) and a whole bunch of incompetent care so it doesn't matter what credentials you have. Also doing clinicals as an LPN student I asked an LPN if she could help me with dentures since I was new and didn't know how to place them , she looked at me and said "I DONT DO DENTURES" and walked away. So Lazy is Lazy and rotten is rotten no matter what title you have. Some people do nursing just to have a paycheck and have no feelings for the job and then you have people in the field who care for the patients. You have to look an at individual person not their title to assess if they are a good worker or not.

Have no regrets going to this school just got my name added to the nys licensing website Monday probably have my license in the mail haven't been home to check yet now it's time to look for work. I'm not flamboyant neither but what does that have to do with anything. That statement sounds so ignorant and the reason why people discriminate. I respect everyone's culture, religion , and race no matter what. That's why I became a nurse because I care about people and show empathy. Who cares if a persons feminine as long as they provide great care.

The trick really works , took nclex on 9/4 did the pvt right after leaving the test site had the good pop up. Just did my quick results on 9/6 at 9 am On the dot and got the PASS next to grade.

Hey babynurse, I can only speak from my experience and the school is good if you are dedicated to your studies and you give it 100%. Most of the teachers really care about teaching the students and want to see you pass , especially 1st and 2nd Trimester , ONLY if you show that you study and take the program seriously. 2nd Trimester was the best and the teachers and chair for that trimester really want to see you succeed. Also they start you off doing clinicals the 2nd week of school which I haven't heard in any other school so that is a plus in my book. It wasn't a bed of roses but you create your own experience ( Meaning don't do what I did, Keep your business private and don't try to befriend people as family because some people have ulterior motives) I did this and that is what made my experience bitter sweet but had nothing to do with the education and teaching at CANNJ. Every nursing school has a list of complaints from students and have bad reviews can't find one that doesn't. The most important thing I can tell you is that the only thing that matters is that the education is good and you can actually PASS and become an LPN and here you can. I am taking my NCLEX exam on Tuesday, most of the classmates before me have already taken nclex and have been licensed as LPNs, so that is testimony enough that you can pass and take your boards going to this school. I think the comparison is so unfair and quiet disrespectful to the LPNs on this site. I dont see people posting on allparamedics.com. This is allNURSES.com . Why the OP didn't compare ADN nurses V. Paramedics? OP sounds like a person who couldn't get into nursing school so is trying to start division. When have you seen a backlog to get into paramedic school?? And why does length of a program not compared instead with intensity and difficulty. My lpn program was hard only 1 week breaks between 3 months of lecture, every week a 8 chapter exam , and you were cut if you scored below 80. My education was intense to demean our profession is a slap in the face to all the LPNs who sacrificed so much to be one. Last time I heard nurses are not running to paramedic school and compare attrition rates of a paramedic school vs. a nursing school that would be a much fairer comparison. That's just my 2 NY cents.

Im already signed up for Rocklands LPN to RN express and signed up for A&PI , Chem 105, ENG 101, Pluralism and Diversity, Life Span development, NUR 103, and a Yoga class lol. The distance is what is making me consider St Pauls since Rockland is so far and St paul is 20 minutes away from me.
