What would you have done?
Thank you all, that is exactly what I did. Followed chain of command and went to the DON and had her speak to the dietary manager.

Survey: Should nurses from other countries be recruited to aid in the nursing shortag
Worked with a nurse from the Phillipines once. I was helping her clean an incontinent patient and she actually said, "I can't believe I am here wiping American butt!" How would you all feel?

What would you have done?
In the dining room last evening and resident begins to cough, could still speak and had good air exchange. Told her, "cough it up MC." She continued to cough and since it was dinner time, all staff was in the dining room and we monitored her. Dietary aide comes along and begins to hit resident's upper back. I asked her to not hit resident on the back, explained if something was in there she (dietary aide) may lodge it even further. Dietary aide shot back at me, argumentatively mind you stating,"there's nothing in her mouth, she's not choking and I'm not going to lodge anything!" The dietary aide continued to argue with me, dining room full of residents and all staff. I firmly stated, "don't ever hit another resident on the back, thank you." I was the ONLY licensed person in the building, entire staff witnessed this occurence. What would you have done?

Hateful, mean nurses
Took my daughter to her doctor and although she is 23, I prefer to accompany her to translate, so to speak. The nurse that did intake and vital signs then showed us to the examination room was one of your "hateful nurses." This nurse did not even speak to either of us but instead pointed, to room, to chair, to examination table... She took my daughter's blood pressure and ripped off the B/P cuff, grabbed the open end and just ripped it off. When the PA came in to examine my daughter, I informed her of the incident and made it clear I was also a nurse and had I behaved like the office nurse, I would be fired and I should be fired for behavior like that. It was abusive. Is this what some of us have become? Bitter and hateful? Not just nurses but society in general. Just read an article in Time magazine and the Today show did a segment on how we (americans) treat one another. It is very sad. We really have to be more proactive and get others to be proactive as well. I wish luck for everyone going through this. Been there several times myself and it is difficult and very stressful. Regards to all Kind and loving nurse

Sex offenders/ residents screening?
I suppose denying a potential resident with a sex offender past could be considered discrimination in some sick way! Worked at a long term care facility years ago. Male resident in his 50's, post CVA, every single morning I had to give him meds and would find him with his member hanging out of his underwear. He WAS aware and even acknowledged by stating the obvious. Reported it to wife, THEY (husband and wife) made a complaint to the state about me. I did excellent charting for weeks and state found no substance to their complaint. I know this is more than what you asked but if you are ever involved, DOCUMENT behaviors, no matter how insignificant you think it to be.

What have other nurses done that have freaked you out?
WOW! Nurse placed NG in patient lung and administered tube feeding and killed the patient. Same nurse placed tube feeding in ice pouch of feeding bag and could not figure out why bag would not prime!!! YIKES!
-
What do I do? Roaches, no heat...
A safe environment is not being given to this patient. Now that you know this, it is your responsibility to report it. Somehow if, god forbid, something should happen to this patient, it will fall on you. Your agency will not cover your behind, ONLY theirs. Hotline this family, may be the only way they will get intervention, and get out of there. I have been, and still going, through your financial hardships. You must take care of you first. It does not sound safe for you. Be safe and stay strong

Starting Nursing salaries by State?
Oh my goodness east Tennesee, that is hilarious! Missouri LPN's (experience does not always matter!) $20-$25/hr

QUESTION?
WOW! All of you have offered some great advice/suggestions. I have until April to make a decision. I'm torn between wanting to accept because I feel I have earned it and exceeded paying my dues, so to speak but then again I'm older now and wonder if I should begin slowing down, also work pediatric home care. Havin' a Party, you make some valid points, STAFFING! There will be only me when no one else. I know this from the current DON. Thank you all

QUESTION?
I live in Missouri and I will have NO support staff, it's just me. Now I've paid close attention to the DON now and though at times she is in at 0800 and out by 4 or 5, she is relied heavily on by the administrator to BE THERE. She is a very dedicated woman, spends the night if bad weather is forecast, offers to pick up staff when they can't make it in, works the floor when a nurse calls in, does change over, etc.. She is called by staff 24/7. It will be JUST ME as it is JUST HER now. I want to be compensated for my time. Should I allow them to make an offer and counter offer? Really don't know.

QUESTION?
I'm a 25+ year LPN with tons of experience in all areas. I've been asked if I would accept an interim to permanent position as DON at a very small assisted living facility. What kind of salary should I ask for? I haven't a clue! Thanks

Manoa Senior Care
I strongly encourage you not to accept a position at Manoa Senior Care. I've known many a nurse to just leave in the middle of the night. We called them the "fly by night nurses!" Too much is expected of you. You will be awakened at any and all hours of the night while on call. If you are stuck with a crazy house mate your time there will be miserable. Although you are offered a car for your own use when available, it is NOT always available. Your pay is humiliating. After your first paycheck, which includes the sign-on bonus, you can barely live off of what you make. If you have any financial obligations at home, you will not be able to survive off of what you make. Basically you are working overtime hours and NOT getting paid for them but the CNA's get overtime. Your salary breaks down to being the same as the CNA's but your responsibilities are far greater than theirs. Some of the CNA's run the houses and the nurse is treated like crap! The nurse ONLY gets a half hour break during her 12 hour shift while the CNA gets an hour break during her 8 hour shift!!! Some of the CNA's will tattle on you for ridiculous things. The lure of Hawaii is what attracts most nurses and while Hawaii is a wonderful place to live, the job trade off is NOT worth it. I strongly encourageyou NOT to accept these positions. If for some reason you do, make sure you always have money to leave and if you want to leave just GO, get yourself out of there! Good luck
