So the last time I was on here I was working towards my pre-reqs for nursing at a community college. Well life happened. I got a full time job, had another baby and ended up in a 7 month MA program. I was skeptical from the start because I've heard how hard it was to find a job...well I let my friend and admissions talk me into it, and I started 3 weeks later. From the beginning I had doubts. The students thought they were basically going to be nurses and the instructors didn't make it any better. They kept saying we were going to take the nurses jobs, and we could do everything a nurse could do.....how could that be when i got half way through the program and we hadn't even started doing things an MA could do?? All of our work came from two books for the whole program. It was all very basic......basic math and english.....very basic anatomy. I was doing very well....but the cost, time (m-f 9-4) just made me not want to do it any more. I was not satisfied. I was tired of spelling tests and other random things to keep us busy. I thought it would be more hands on. And it just wasn't worth 12k. So here I am, back to square one. I thought it would be a quick way to enter the health care field. I still want to be a nurse so I guess I better pick back up on my pre-reqs. I just needed to vent. Ugh.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I just wasn't sure and I almost ruled the school out. I want to go somewhere with good clinical sites.

I spoke to someone at a school today about their lpn program and I asked about their clinical sites. They said they're mostly in nursing homes. Now I know in most areas lpn's are mainly employed in ltc facilities, but I was under the impression that lpn programs had clinicals at hospitals too. Was I wrong? where were your clinicals located? Is that a sign of a bad program?

Ok, I'm having trouble in psychology. This is my second time taking it. I know this is supposed to be an easy class, but its not for me. My school says a class can't be taken more than twice. I'm guessing this includes withdrawals. I dropped it the first time. I just don't know what to do. The semester isn't over til December. Do I drop, or risk getting a bad grade? Either way, I won't be able to apply to the lpn or rn program. I feel so horrible now. I'll never be a nurse if I don't pass

I loved it! Sometimes I wonder if nursing is for me, or if I can do it. This just gave me the encouragement I needed. Thanks for sharing.

If you don't want to give up on being an MA, (which I think is what you're saying) then don't, unless you do as others have said and look for a different school that offers an evening program. Which still might not work because some evening programs still start around 3pm. So you choose, nursing school or working as an MA. Depending on where you're located, you might not even have a job schedule to worry about. I hear its tough for MA's to find work

Intro to bichemistry is a pre-req for my CC's nursing program. We're going to cover organic, inorganic +& biochem. I had my 1st class today, it seems as if as long as you study +& read the material, +& don't miss any labs it'll be fine.

I agree with Sopranokris. 53k is A LOT for an adn program, and nobody is guaranteed a job when they finish school. It can take up to a year or more for some new grads to find a job. Loans kick in after 6 months or so. I know how it is to want to make money soon. I have a car payment and a daughter. There is a bryant +& stratton +& ITT tech near me, and I could start right away. But, i'd rather not be in debt, +& know my credits will transfer so I can get my BSN later.

Everyone wants to be a nurse practitioner....I'll be happy with just my BSN. I hate school....lol.

Seriously. I don't know how I got by during the summer semester. Now fall semester is almost here. I have some tough classes- biochem, college algebra, psychology....any tips on how to study? I always just sit there and read and it gets boring. Its hard to try to study at home. I can never focus. I really want to do well this semester.

Intro to Biochem (with lab), Psych 1010, Eng 1020, and Intermediate algebra. I'm hoping to take a nurse aide class sometime in november. It'll be weekends only. I have math M/W and Biochem Fridays...the other two are online. Hope I can pull through.

O_o looks like you won't be starting then. Why did you wait until 3 weeks before you start nursing school? And you know you needed the class by the end of this month?

If you want another baby, why even ask the opinion of people you don't know? In the end, YOU have to deal with whatever happens. Do what you feel is best. I personally would wait. I understand how you feel though. I have a 16 month old. Ideally, i'd have another so they won't be too far apart, but I have to worry about making a better life for the child I have now.

Any floor that will hire me....lol. I'd like to work on a post-partum floor, ICU, or LTC/rehab/skilled nursing. Yes, I'm one of the few that wouldn't mind working ltc. I'd gladly take a job at one.

I was in my math class today, and some people were saying that in 2014 or 2015 all nurses will have to have a BSN. They said ADN programs aren't telling people this, even though they know about it. Is this true? What about people who won't even start their adn programs til 2013/2014? It just doesn't seem right to me,

People on here say nurses don't make a lot, but where I come from (the ghetto, hood, whatever you wanna call it) 35k or more is a lot to people where I live. So a lot of girls I know do go into nursing for the money. Also, everyone wants to be a cna because they think the pay is good o_O Me personally, I want to make a decent living formy daughter. I love helping others, I want to make a difference in people's lives. So its both for me. I hope I get into a program

I'm taking: Biochem w/lab, College Algebra, Psychology (online), and Eng Comp 2 (online)13 cr hours...it doesn't seem like a lot but this will be the most classes I've taken. I know I can do it but I have a hard time studying. I have a daughter (she's 1) and I can never get anything did at home. Any suggestions? I don't want my grades to suffer.

I'm a pre-nursing student. I can't afford cna classes yet, something always comes up when I'm supposed to pay. But anyway, i'd like to try to land a dietary aide job in a nursing home. The thing is, I have nothing to put on a resume. No job/volunteer experience. And I can't think of a good objective for a resume for dietary aide position. Any suggestions?

Wow, thanks for all the replies everyone. I'm definitely going to put some space between us. Its not even just the school thing either. She acts like she is better than everyone else and seems to think she knows everything. And she's only completed her 1st year. I am not going to let anyone discourage me from nursing, I'm 100% sure this is what I want to do. My mom is also very supportive so that helps too. I know that one day I'm gonna be a great nurse, and I can't wait to start "wiping butts"

There is a friend of mine that's always making smart comments about nurses and nurse aide's, and I noticed it started after I told her I wanted to be a nurse. She'll say things like "why would anybody want to be a nurse? I'm not wiping anyone's butt except my own." O_O she also talks down on community college because she goes to a four year university. I find these things very offensive. I don't say negative things about her major, even though I think its dumb. I know how to keep my mouth closed, I never try to put others down. Has anyone else experienced this?

Wow, you guys are all so helpful. Thanks for all the replies. I won't have much (if any) loan debt because I'm at a cc right now. They're very affordable, one of the cheapest in my state. I'm just going to continue taking pre-reqs +& gen ed courses. Hopefully I find a job when my cna course is over so I can network, and see how things are for lpn's/rn's in my area. Also, does anyone know how I would go about shadowing a nurse? I've heard of people shadowing in hospitals, do any of you think it would be possible for me to also shadow an lpn in ltc/assisted living/rehab?

I also thought the same, because I see many people here say that they do both. I have also been reading your articles about lpn's and they have been very helpful and informative. I didn't think being a lpn was such a bad option for someone my age. Seems like everyone else thinks otherwise

How do I find out what the job market is like here? I live in cleveland, oh. I don't know any nurses. Do I just do job searches online?
