UCLA Masters Entry Clinical Nurse (MECN) Program
llg, unfortunately i think you are correct. Its all marketing. Is the shortage so bad that they will do anything to attract people from other career areas into their field? I know Ive looked and lusted after these entry programs. With a degree already who wants to think about going back to school for years and years, and pay more $ on top of already established student loans. But thankfully there are ways around this. Just as an example, Chico State (my wonderful school- but not for nursing) offers distance education for the ADN who want to be BSN, or the BSN who want to be MSN. This little convenience has really put my mind at ease as far as deciding the BEST WAY to becoming a nurse. IT Doesn't Freekin matter anymore. I can take the traditional route if thats all that is available to me in my area because there will always be a convenient way to continue my education. I love that thought. Arent distance programs (for MSN) on the rise? Is there a stigma? I wish more schools had this option because i dont live in the chico area anymore. hmm, that might have to change.

Are all the nursing programs impacted??
dont come to visalia! we're impacted too. Ive had to wait 2 semesters to take frickin micro and its the only bloody prereq that i've needed. will the 3rd time be a charm? I think its impacted everywhere. And not enough funding is going to the schools. C'mon Hospitals and help us out. Start giving us more funding for classes and teachers (which visalia is also short of) so that we can start providing the services that you need.

Masters Level General Nurse - What is it?
hi flyingfish2u, i too am having somewhat of a challenge trying to figure out what to do with this situation. A few of the schools in Cal with the EntryLevel Masters degree that i have looked into do have a specialization such as administration or family nurse practitioner but you pursue it after you pass your nclex and start working. So perhaps fullerton does this as well. I suppose if you dont have any aspirations of becoming management or going into research than a bsn would be fine. Although there are bsn nurses who are in management. Besides, many schools/universities are offering MSNs through distance education. So when you discover more what you would like to do with a masters degree you could continue working while continuing your education. Also consider time. You will be able to work in about 1 year from starting the Accelerated BSN. With the EntryMSN you can work after about the same amount of time but you immediately start in on your grad work. So that's three years until you have a degree of anykind. That amount of time (3 years) ends up to be the same if you decided to pursue your masters degree on your own after your AccelBSN. So I wouldnt worry about it too much. It just depends on what your interests are and what works best for your situation. Maybe someone else has some experience in this area and they can shed more light on it.

Fastest way to Nursing after my BS in Biology
I've been dealing with your same issues of which pathway is best after you already have a Bachelors. Where I used to live up in chico the main hospital primarily recruited the BSN graduates from Chico State even though we also had an ADN program at the local community college. It seemed there was more incentive for students to attain their BSN. Where I live now we have a community college which supplies our hospital with their recent ADN graduates. In fact, one nurse complained to me that the majority of their nurses were ADNs. So you can see how it might depend a little bit on where you're living. Just go all the way. Especially if you want to teach or specialize. For heaven's sake, there is a nurse shortage and we need good nurses. good luck

What exactly is parish nursing?
artis, I dont know where you live but Azusa Pacific University has a parish nursing program.

Any COS Visalia students out there?
Hey, lunakat, I would just like to know how you are enjoying the ADN program. I'm in limbo right now waiting to go back to school and really want to go through the program. I've been hearing they're turning lots of people away because of the shortage of teachers.

Parish nursing
I know Azusa Pacific University offers studies in parish nursing.

Labor, birth and spectators
When i was prego I absolutely did not want ANYONE in the room but my husband. Mind you, I have no problem saying my peace and if anyone was offended too bad because it was my body. My mom ended up staying longer than I had planned but by the time I realized it I didnt care anymore - I just wanted baby out! Then later my MIL comes by at the request of my hubby and for whatever reason I didnt care. In fact, at the end of it all I was glad they were there. My poor husband would have died if he didnt have some relief from the moms. Pictures, on the other hand... Heck NO! Perhaps the compromise could be Yes to MIL, Yes to best friend, but NO to pics. Let them be offended. They should be glad just to be there.

health and wellness
I was wondering if there are any nurses out there who are involved in the health and wellness field. fitness? nutrition? exercise? home rehab? My backround is in exercise science but I originally wanted to go into nursing. So now i am wondering if a marriage between the two worlds sounds feasible. Please offer what you can.

School nursing right after nursing school??
I am interested in school nursing and wonder which of you pursued it right after nursing school. Did you wish you had more experience in a hospital setting first?? Or if you decided to switch from the hospital setting I would also like to know if you felt that experience made a big difference. Thank you to all who reply.

Direct Entry Programs/Masters Entry
i do know of one private school here in cali that has an msn-e program. the first year or so prepares you to get your rn and then the last two years are on a part time basis. this is so you can work in the field and gain experience. if you're interested in the website here it is: http://www.westernu.edu/nursing/msn-e.xml good luck

Contemplating a career in nursing
i would have to agree with the previous entry. I got a bachelors in Exercise Phys and pretty much cant do anything with it besides work in a health club (where you are really a salesperson), or go work for a PT as an aid and make minimum wage. With a masters degree you could do research which might be fun for some, or go into cardiac rehab and do stresstesting all day long. And i have learned that many hospital/clinics dont even hire Ex Phys's anymore - they just have the nurses do everything. ( is this true in others experiences?) I loved what I learned in school and found it to be a great foundational degree to lead you into a lot of other areas other than exercise physiology. But i understand that in other countries- like Australia- the exercise physiologist has much more opportunity. The USA is a little bit behind trend. HMMM, australia has really pretty beaches!!

Anyone certified to do stress testing??
Yes, the ACSM does offer certification specifically for stress testing. Check out their website, ACSM.org I have not taken their certification for this but i know its very thorough. I have a degree in exercise physiology and they wont let anyone from that field take the classes/test without a masters degree. good luck
