  1. Math? Seriously? You don't use Calculus here. You don't use Trigonometry. You don't even use Algebra. If you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide, you're fine. Science, courage, heart, brains, sure. Sense of humor is also quite helpful. Pfft. What profession doesn't? I have been a participant in many, MANY online forums in the past fifteen years. This is one of the absolutely worst pieces of "advice" I have ever read. Other than an example of how misandrist a very select few female nurses can be, there is no useful item that can be gleaned from this. Do your own research. Make your own choices. Careers - and unsupportive partners/spouses - CAN be changed. This comes from a male nurse who has also been there and done that.
  2. There's Florida and there's Miami. Both can be considered different states.
  3. This is actually not new news. This is the direction the NP genre is going. You will be much more competitive with the DNP. As tempting as it may be to go the cheap route with the Master's, the tide is turning towards the Doctorate.
  4. The bigger picture is ethics. Considering that this person is choosing to not disclose an event that will cause them to be absent for months - or possibly permanently if the new mom decides on the stay-at-home track after the child is born - I would wonder what else this person was not disclosing to me. Hiring managers don't hire for style points. They hire because they need feet on the floor.
  5. $21.85 sounds like Orlando Health's starting pay. Florida Hospital offers slightly above $22 for a freshly minted nurse...really not enough difference to be concerned about. Take the offer. If you really need more pay you can work nights and get a healthy differential.
  6. You left out the part about walking 20 miles to work every day in the snow uphill both ways...
  7. The meek may inherit the Earth, but they won't get the job.
  8. 7 out of 55. Unsolicited advice: Don't dip your pen in class - or company - ink.
  9. Welcome to Reality 101 and Networking 202.
  10. A dog carrying a bone walked to a pond and saw another bone in the reflection...
  11. You're going to graduate into an $18 - $22 per hour job. Take that into consideration while budgeting your education.
  12. One sponsor is a Republican, the other is a Democrat. Good to see we'll get a bipartisan screwing if this passes.
  13. There is nothing beyond simple Algebra that is needed. If you can convert units and solve an equation such as 10x = 95 for the variable x, then you can do all of the math required for nursing.
  14. I don't see a problem with this if lifting is a repeated daily requirement of the job. This puts a literal spin on the phrase "carrying their weight". From my experience I do find a need to lift 50+ lbs during my shift. Granted it may be only once or twice a day, but this task is shared by nurses and techs alike on my floor.
  15. Keep handing her rope.
  16. A bit of ancient history, but I got in the Summer 2010 class. My previous GPA was 3.3 and my prereq GPA was 4.0. We took the TEAS at the beginning of the first semester after we were accepted and I scored 95%. I know that has since changed to become part of the qualifying criteria.
  17. Base pay for GNs at FH is slightly above $22. ORMC pays $21.85 for GNs.
  18. The Accelerated class of '09 had problems finding jobs immediately after graduation. This is no knock on them as Orlando Health and Florida Hospital had hiring freezes going on at the time. Naturally this didn't give those of us in the class of '10 a warm and fuzzy feeling. However, most of the '09 class found jobs before the class of '10 graduated. Now did all the '10 grads have jobs lined up before graduating? No, although a few did have job offers in hand at graduation time. The vast majority of the class of '10 have found jobs by now - many of them in the immediate Orlando area - It took me a month from when I started my search to find my current RN position. Salaries do rise over time, however, the steps are relatively small. The best bets for increasing salary are in either getting an advanced degree (depends on the discipline), going into certain specialty areas of nursing, or going into higher levels of management.
  19. 1. No unions. 2. Generally 1:5 - 1:6 in med/surg. 1:3 - 1:4 in PCU/Stepdown. 1:2 - 1:3 in ICU.
  20. Your primary choices in Orlando are either Florida Hospital or Orlando Health. Both have several campuses spread throughout the metro area. There are also the two HCA hospitals (Central Florida, Osceola), however, these lag well behind the other choices. Both FH and OH are solid outfits and are worthy of consideration. Both use computerized charting. Base pay scales are comparable. Both have strong supporters...and detractors. Both are not-for-profit. The basic differences between the two: * Florida Hospital is part of the Adventist system and is faith-based. Orlando Health is its own outfit and is not faith-based. * Florida Hospital is gravitating towards total care and phasing out nurse techs. Orlando Health continues to use nurse techs and has no plans to change. * Florida Hospital pays bonuses. To the best of my knowledge Orlando Health does not. * Orlando Health has the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the area.
  21. I have no problem with this law. Do the crime, do the time, and not all time is necessarily in a prison. Fifteen years is a fair amount of time to allow pass before allowing eligibility. If this is a problem there are other states that will allow you to ply your trade.
  22. Got good popup and two days later passing notification from my BON. Either PVT works or the epic coincidence continues.
  23. Also...tip for FL nurses...the state BON turnaround is only two working days, so no need to waste lunch money on paying Pearsonvue for the quickie results.
