So, we don't learn how to do IVs in nursing school?
I never said that I didn't know or that we shouldnt learn. We learned to do them first semester. Im just saying that we shouldn't be worried if we don't get it to do it in school. :) Edited to add by in school I meant clinical. We should at least have a general knowledge.

So, we don't learn how to do IVs in nursing school?
I have always heard (and firmly believe) that we are in school to learn why you starting the IV, what fluids are you going to run, what should you be looking for while it's running?.... etc. Skills are not the most important part, it's the information behind why we do the skills. :)

when to use a transfer belt?
I use them ALL the time... then again I'm a tech on a Rehab unit. I will say that I always look for one when I float to other units and can never find them. Even after I get report that patients are a Max assist of 2, I don't always understand why people don't use them more. They make life so much easier and better for your back.... :)

Delegation Issues as a Student
Definitely! As a tech I've had nurses come tell me that they had put a pt. in the bathroom and to watch for the light because they were going to another room. Or they asked me to do it. Totally okay to delegate that. :) And I will say that we are hitting this hard as well because most people that have taken the NCLEX lately have said a LOT of the questions were on delegating and prioritizing (I'm getting my ASN).

1/2 nursing class cut, WHY??
We started with 33, lost 7 last semester and one already this semester. This semester is over in two weeks and I imagine that we will lose another one or two. All except two were due to failing.

A&P gaps-Will it hurt in Nursing School?
Our teacher told us you first have to know what is normal, to know what is wrong. Def. go back over it, that was suggested for our group to do over our 5 wk. break.

Frustrated....
I was told (by an instructor) that you are there to learn the knowledge behind the skills. You may not always get to do those skills while you are in clinicals but they can be taught in a few times or a refresher given on the job. i understand you feel unprepared but that is something that can be taught in the "real world." :) I'm not saying that this is MY point of view but it is something to think about. :)

Fundamentals of Nursing
We had a long discussion about this is in my fundamental class today. this class is a learning curve... you have to change your way of thinking. it's hard when you are getting as much out of it (like grades!) that you are putting in. i am really glad that they are showing what the tests are going to be throughout the program instead of letting us take this and then get to med surg and fail out :) just try and focus on what the question is really asking and try and figure out what they have put in to distract you. when we were going over our test today i realized that i look way too much into that instead of what it's really asking. i'm not sure if this is really that great of advice but i know it's what has helped me. good luck!

New Ivy Tech RN/LPN students for Jan 2011
I'm at a different campus but what I've been doing is reading the chapters before class. Then once I get to class I don't take notes but just highlight what is on the powerpoint slides in my book. I review/ read all of that before the test. That worked for me on the first two tests that we just had.... but it may not work the next time! I'll just have to see. You'll just have to figure out what will work for you! I honestly don't really do much besides go to class, take care of my kids and study. It's taken over my life but it's only two years! Good luck!

A list of schools that only look at Prereqs
I can tell you that some of your info on Ivy Tech is wrong. They have just recently changed the admission standards and have made it harder to get in. A&P 1 and 2 are weighted heavier than Eng and Psych. They moved to the Teas V (which I think everyone did though.) I'm also pretty sure that there is more than 100 people that apply. I know it varies from campus to campus but pretty sure that it's more. Also it's like 40-50 spots. Just depends on how many clinical spots. As for the lowest GPA, most people don't get in with anything less than 4 A's, again depends on campus. I got in with 3 A's and a B and an 88 on the Teas but I got lucky. Hope that helps! :)

how far do you drive for school
Live about 45-60 min. away. Just depends on time of day and traffic.

If you go to the Indiana Nursing Programs board you will be able to find out more! But just to let you know that I've heard in Indy you have to have all A's. Good Luck!
