wow that was sad, I don't know what I would do in that situation I'm just wondering why we are not doing more to help Japan.

Last place I worked at we had a sex offender and a murderer. I was told to take another person with me when I cared for the s.o. until I felt more comfortable with him--never did feel comfortable with him but I got to the point (very quickly) where I could handle him on my own. I never talked about my girls with him like I would my other residents (he had raped a little girl), you just had to keep a eye on him and his hands.

With my last pregnancy I had gone for my pre baby pap and received a letter in the mail saying I had HPV. When I had the baby my after baby pap showed mild cell changes. The next month I had a colposcopy that showed moderate cell changes, the next month I had a LEEP that showed severe cell changes. My point in telling this is that I have the strain that causes cervical cancer and since I had it while I was pregnant I would say that the strain does not prevent you from carrying to term or even getting pregnant since I believe that I had it before I got pregnant with the last baby. I asked my gyno alot of questions relating to the LEEP and he did say that those procedures is what may cause a issue with fertility, not the HPV itself.

There's one on there called Nurse notes NCLEX, it's 2.99. I was skimming over it and it has med. term, med. abbreviations, drug info, conversions, dosages, body systems, and questions. I think it's a good app because I am in Med. Term and A & P 2 now and with the med term and body systems on there i don't have to lug around my heavy books (like if I am riding in the car to the inlaws or the store) I can just look at the app and read up on what I want to read up on. editing to say that I looked at it more and there is ALOT of info on the app, well worth 2.99!!

The last LTC I worked at I gave a resident a cig and the other CNA with me told me not to do that again 'cause if the higher ups caught me doing that I could get written up or fired. I don't remember the reason why, but I thought it was stupid.

I injured my back at my last job, it was not from lifting, but from rolling. The resident was in bed and i was rolling him from hi back to his R side so I can get him ready for bed. He apparently did not want to get ready for bed so as I was rolling him toward the wall he put his hand on the wall and pushed against me and I felt a pull in my lower back. I ended up going to the ER and got a shot in my hip--painful--it still hurts from time to time.

Are you willing to move to Terre Haute? There are 2 hospitals here, one that just poured millions into an expansion and they are getting ready to redo their NICU/L&D area. If you are into LTC there are several nursing homes here plus it is close to Indy, and if you are able to have both a Indiana and Illinois License, Terre Haute is close to the Illinois border plus it is close to Brazil and Clinton, who also have hospitals. It is my opinion that I live in a pretty good area as far as job possibilities go, of course that is when I actually get through the program (which I won't apply for for another few months), but Union Hospital is hiring, their addy is Union Hospital :: Terre Haute, Indiana the benefits are appealing--hth.

TY for the replies, I think maybe I freaked before I throughly read the article. The script my girl has is made bu Mylan. It does make you wonder how long it takes a pharmacy to become aware of recalls if the pharmacist did not know about it. Yes the article came out on the 4th but it also said that health care professionals and consumers were notified--I guess the pharmacy does not count.

When are pharmacies notified of recalls? The article is dated Jan. 4 and I called Walgreens to ask about this product--my 6 yr old is on this (the one diagnosed with Tachycardia with heart murmur)--and the pharmacist told me he did not know/haven't heard about the recall. I have to wait until tomorrow the call her doc. cause she uses her nebulizer quite frequently.

No, you are not off base, kudos to you for showing concern for your neighbors--I wish more people were like that. I hope the wife is ok although I feel as though healing may take some time.

I am nearly through with my A & P 1 class and so far it has been about cells and muscles. The bones I understand learning, but how important is it to know cells, cell division, what covers the muscles, what controls the force of a muscle contraction, etc.? Maybe I am not seeing the "big picture" here, but I really don't have an interest in all that, I just want to dissect and see what is on the inside of the body in a hands on approach. TY for any replies.

He's good, he's 1 & 1/2 now and just oh so cute :-) I worry more about him than I did with the girls because he seems to "choke" when he eats, he's not choking choking but he seems to have a problem with eating. I don't know it has been awhile since I had a 1 yr old to feed. My sil said that maybe his little flap is not fully developed so I guess that is something to look into, but boy was everybody right when they said boys are different than girls.

Hey, just wanted to say that i am currently taking my prereqs to apply for nursing school. I have 100% loss in my right ear and sometimes have trouble with my left ear. I don't know sign and i don't read lips either. I am going to get the Littman 3100 or 3200. I am a licensed CNA and did not have any problems getting my CNA (i am not going to say license because apparently some people on this site don't think it's a license even though you have to renew it every 2 years and be in good standing with the state). I have always worked LTC and have not had a problem with the nurses or residents when I ask them to repeat themselves, sometimes I just get down and put my ear to them (the residents) if I have a problem hearing them. Some will ask what i am doing so I just explain it to them and they are ok with it. I found a site you might want to check out http://www.amphl.org/ it is the association of medical professionals with hearing loss.

I just want to say that NICU nurses are wonderful. When my youngest was born, he was healthy and latched on the first day, second day he ran a fever and couldn't eat and ended up in the NICU. Granted he was not as sick as the other babies in there he just didn't know how to do the suck swallow breath thing. His NICU nurses took wonderful care of him and I just want to say thank you to his NICU nurses and all the NICU nurses on here, they truly are wonderful people :-)

BTW yousoldtheworld, my comment about the hoyer was not even directed toward you so why did you get so defensive? I take that back about the hoyer taking 10 minutes, if resident is already hooked up to lift pad then 2 good cnas working together can get them from chair to bed in 5.

I was not "talking down" to you and "assuming you would put your license at risk". And yes in the state of Indiana you do have to have a CNA license to work as a CNA otherwise do not call yourself a CNA. I was just trying to give some friendly advice, if you want to be defense about it that's up to you. No I do not know what facility you work at, no I do not know the facilities policies and procedures but yes it is against procedure to use a hoyer by yourself, I can't believe a facility or even the nurse would allow such a thing to happen. Again I do not know about you or where you work but I do know the rules regarding hoyer lift procedure and you are not following it. What if you have the person in the hoyer, and you go to lift them from chair to bed and in the middle of having them in the air (as you are pushing the hoyer toward the bed) the hoyer malfunctions and they 1. get stuck or 2. god forbid it breaks and the resident crashes to the floor? You have to have another person to guide the resident &/or worse case scenario catch the resident if the hoyer malfunctions? Things happen and they happen fast.

Was the guy ill? After awhile, when you know what c-diff smells and looks like, you can usually tell when they have it.

I agree, even cna jobs are getting hard to get. I will say that in LTC if they are short staffed (and I'm sure they are) you will most likely have to work every other weekend unless they are nice and let you only work during the week. You never know until you apply, some places are flexible--good luck in your job search :-)

I agree with everyone else, you are not to give the lady the cup, the LPN was suppose to physically give it to her. Where I live CNAs can be trained to pass meds, but they have to have 1000 hours of CNA experience and go through class, clinicals, and a state test. I have seen LPNs do this many times, CYA and have the nurse do it. Always remember it is YOUR license on the line, not theirs (ok it could be the LPNs license too, but the one you should be most concerned with is yours).

You know if a resident (or you) gets hurt because you used a hoyer by yourself, that's your license. It is against procedure to do that, I'm just saying that you don't want to get in trouble for that, it's your license not your co-workers. If it was me, and I have been there where there is little to no help, if I can't get someone to help me with the hoyer then the resident stays in bed. If the nurse (or whomever) is insistent on that resident getting out of bed then they can help you. If you have someone good helping you, a hoyer lift takes 10 minutes. Taking 10 minutes out of their day to help with a safe lift is better than not helping you at all. I have worked in 3 nursing homes and the procedure for a hoyer lift is the same--2 people at all times. I would look over the policy for your facility and keep a copy with you pertaining to hoyers, if anyone gives you grief over it, point it out and tell them it is against regulation/procedure. Doesn't anybody help each other there?

It also seems to me that there is a lot of discouragement from some of the posters on this site, is that really something that should be going on on here? I mean I get that in some areas of the country the jobs are slim pickings, but in other parts of the country there are jobs and places willing to hire new grads. I just think this should be a place of encouragement, not discouragement :-)
