Xenaderm?
I love xenaderm..:roll a great barrier cream that can be applied only once per day usually.... It is expensive but can be used on highly excoriated areas. I have seen this work on patients that have had excoriated areas for months where nothing else worked and this cleared it up within a couple of weeks..still should avoid use of briefs while patient is in bed.

WA State and Deaconess
Unfortunately there is really no way of getting around the boards laws for the Nclex. I am in Ca and really wanted and started to do Excelsior but after much thought I decided to just go the traditional route because I never want to be limited as to where I can work and I didn't want to be forced to move once I finished since Ca does not accept Excelsior college grads any longer. You need to call the Washington boards of nurses and ask them straight up if they accept Deaconess. Deaconess also should tell you whether or not your state does but I would call your state boards just to get the correct info to be on the safe side. Also you need to check into which hospitals will allow you to do your clinical time. I would have all this in writing from Deaconess before I started. Good Luck!

Personnal lives or reckless?
Wannabee, Have you ever heard the term "Nurses eat their young?". LOL..I feel sorry for you when you get out of school into the nursing field. With that attitude of yours you will be gobbled up in no time! :rotfl:

How strong is your immune system?
My first year as a nurse I was sick all the time. Now when I get sick which is rarely(knock on wood :), I get a mild version of the sickness. My kids come home with all kinds of nasty stuff and I can be around them the whole time while they are sick and never get it. I truly believe this profession builds our immunities.

Are my testicles black?
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!! :rotfl: :chuckle

I have to be bathed by my classmate???
There is no way I would do that. What are they going to do kick you out? That would give a bad rep to that school. We never had to do that and that is just ridiculous. Don't let them scare you into doing something like this that you are not comfortable doing. I would definately read some law books about that one.

Excelsior College
LOL...Yes, I would like to have the last word on this. You seem like the type of person that has very low self esteem and in order to "pump" yourself up you try to make other's feel little. For whatever reason the comments I made about another's reply regarding EC has got you all worked up. I feel I had every right to make the comment I did because this person was basically saying that if we don't go to a "normal" college for an RN degree then we will not be good nurses. Maybe you were just looking for someone you thought you could belittle..but sorry, I have confidence in myself and my clinical skills as a nurse. As an LVN I have come across a few RN's that act like they are a "higher power" just because of their title. I will be an RN soon and I will not treat others that way. Maybe you need to find another field to work in..we definately don't need any more "power trips" out there. Go ahead and go to another subject. You're wasting my time with all this garbage you talk..go bully someone else, I don't get bullied easy. P.S. As far as my errors in writing..I am not perfect and never claimed to be but come on..if you can't spell simple words or even pronounce them then maybe there is room for a class..I give room for typo's but pure wrong pronunciation over and over indicates a problem.

Excelsior College
Ex130load, Well you should pat yourself on the back for that great litttle speech :) Maybe you should have read my reply to the other user's comments as it will clearly say that I did not call this person "stupid", I simply said her comment was. Trust me, I do not feel that I live in a glass house but when someone makes rude comments about a school that I am attending it offends me. Especially if this person has never taken any classes through this school. So, thanks for your comments but next time read the whole story before you get excited and make comments that don't apply. Have a nice day!

Excelsior College
No, reading stupid comments like yours is a total waste of time! I have met so many nurses that brag about what good grades they got in nursing school and they are so incompetent I wouldn't let them take care of my dog! I would be cautious of you anyway since the simplest words you spell wrong. I hear they have a few English classes through Excelsior..want their number?

Excelsior College
I am also doing the Excelsior program and I live in California. I haven't enrolled yet and plan to when I get a couple tests out of the way. I know that CA does not accept this program but when I am done they can be short another nurse because I am thinking of moving out of this state. I am a single mom and I work full time..this is the only way for me to go back to school. I feel this program makes you learn more simply because you are learning everything on your own. My question is...if I get licensed in another state and want to come back here to CA will they license me by waiver if I am an EC grad? I know I need to call the boards and ask them but it is hard when I am at work so if anyone knows this please pass on the info. Also, what about these so called compact states that allows one to get a license and use it in several states instead of having to get one for every state?

Allergic reaction to sulfa antibiotics
I had an allergic reaction to sulfa about 5 years ago. I had taken it several times before for frequent UTI's and never had a problem. This last time I took it and about 45 minutes later I started sneezing one right after another..a few minutes after that my heart was racing, my face bright red, :angryfire and I had a hard time breathing..(all of this started happening while I was driving!). I pulled over with my kids in the back seat and told them to call 9-1-1 on my cell if I passed out..then I managed to call my ex-husband which thankfully only lived a few minutes from where I was and he came and rushed me to the ER. That was scary!!! When I got there I started feeling a little better and with a little benedryl they gave me it all went away but I have never taken sulfa since. Everyone has different theories for the reaction symptoms but we are all different and our bodies have different ways of letting us know that something isn't right. I would have never thought a sneezing spell would lead to my almost passing out..now I am a lot more cautious and I even have some epi that I keep at home and always have benedryl on hand.

Should new LPN grad go into Med/Surg right away?
I went to school in a military town and had some pretty strict ex-army nursing instructors..they told us to take the worst job that we could find for at least a year after school..they said it would teach us better than a cushy job and give us the skills we needed to learn that you just don't get in school..they were right! I took a job at a step down cardiac unit and that was so scary but very educational for me!! Since then I have worked a lot of agency work and experienced almost every floor of the hospital without as much fear. Good Luck!

Future LPN needs help!
I am not sure of what kind of programs they have in your area but when I went to school I was a single parent and I took advantage of everything I could to get me through school. You need to apply for a pell grant (FAFSA) which is free money that you don't have to pay back. Also consider getting a student loan to help you with finances while you are in school. It won't be a whole lot but it will help. Also call the welfare department in your area and ask them what kind of programs they have to help you through school. JTPA is one that I used that paid my tuition, books, uniforms, and helped with child care. I do not know if they have that there but you can also go to your college and ask them if they have a single parent program which can give you a lot of info on where the help is..hope this helps! P.S. You may even consider getting a weekend job while you are in school..that is what I did and at least it paid the utilities and some groceries
