little company of mary torrance RN residency program 2014
Wonderful program, I did it in Spring of 2013. Coincidentally, I actually spoke to the education director at my hospital, LCM San Pedro earlier today because I wanted to find out about the transition programs they tend to run with new grad where existing nurses can get trained into a new dept like ICU or Emergency. She told me the next new grad/transition cohort starts in October. Torrance and San Pedro train together. From what I recall, when you submit an application to Torrance, they will let you know very fast if your application does not make the cut. I also know you must have a BSN to get considered for new grad at Torrance as I believe they are shooting for Magnet status. My new grad application was to San Pedro and was actually considered internal because I was doing a pilot trial of a 2 month non paid residency program there which established with Los Angerles Harbor College where I had just gotten my ADN from in 2012. I had before that though, applied to Torrance for other positions and my applications were bounced back sometimes in a matter of minutes lol. These were applications to regular RN positions when I had no experience, they were not to new grad, so don't lose hope lol. It never hurts to follow up on your status, perhaps give them a call, but only do this once, don't pester them repeatedly I can ask our Education Director if she has an idea as to whether or not new grad Fall 2014 candidates have been selected yet and any timeline she might know of. Only thing that might be an issue is whether or not they are still only/primarily taking internal transfer candidates who were hired as Epic Implementation Trainers/Super Users earlier this year when we switched systems. I know the new grads who signed on for that have preferential consideration and that the last cohort was only for them. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck and am glad to answer any more questions you might have. I love working for Providence Little Company of Mary-San Pedro which is the sister hospital to Torrance, great people, great pay, great care :)

Providence Little Company of Mary Torrance?
I did my 2012 preceptorship on the tele floor there and it was a great experience. Really nice hospital and yes they have CNA's. To answer the other question, yes they have a new grad program. in 2013 my new grad cohort from Providence Little Company San Pedro had classes with the Torrance new grads. We had 12, I think they had 8. You have really stay alert to job postings for new grad, they come up and go back down in a matter of of a day. A BSN is pretty much necessary for Torrance also.

Thoughts of being a float nurse?
Being a float nurse keeps things interesting and sometimes it's nice to avoid certain drama that can come when you "belong" to a unit. Most important though, if you are ever floated to an area where you have not been oriented first or feel out of your depth, speak up! Always good to let the charge nurse know, when you get there, if aspects of care are unfamiliar or weak so you can get proper assistance and care remains safe for all invoved.

Which program is better LA Harbor or LA Southwest?
I am also a LAHC grad and I can tell you firsy hand, it is a great program. Yes, it is challenging, but you come away from it really well prepared. You also come away more marketable, several area hospitals still interview and hire LAHC ADN grads. I can't personally speak regarding Southwest, but if you choose LAHC, I think it would be worth the extra bit of commuting

ASU RN to BSN Online
I just finished and it is a great program. I worked full time (3 x 12 hr shifts/week + new grad residency classes) and have 2 small children. I took 3 classes per semester and 2 over the summer, and finished in just over a year with a 3.9 GPA. The semesters were broken into two 8 week "sessions" so each semester I always had 2 classes together and then a 3rd which was alone. Never a problem. The workload is reasonable and the program really does give you a lot of resources to aid in your success.

New Grad salary in California?
Los Angeles: $42.50 (including the $5/hr night differential) an hour as a new grad ADN hire in my first year. Finishing my BSN in 3 weeks for which I believe I get a one time $1500 bonus.

Providence Hospitals New Grads
Congratulations to all who were just hired on to be Epic specialists! I imagine some of you will be training me at some point in the near future:) Just something to think about, Late February was the month New Grad applications opened up at Torrance and San Pedro this year. For those planning to apply for new grad at those locations, might want to choose a beginning wave to do Epic so that you will be done with your commitment obligation in time to start the Spring cohorts. Again, grats on your hiring, Epic rollout is going to be a huge event at the CA Providence hospitals and you guys are going to be a part of making it work

Providence Hospitals New Grads
I have been full time since my March hire date and love it. I was trained on several units under a preceptor for several months and was then returned to my home unit. Finally did my first solo shift on June 28. There were 12 in my cohort and we spent anywhere from usually 8-16 hrs a week of classes in addition to shifts with a preceptor You could not exceed 40 hrs in a week so the number of shifts depended upon your scheduled classes for any given week. The pay at my hospital is very good plus I get the night shift differential. We are union so our pay rate apparently is a bit higher than our neighboring Providence facility. Providence has nice benefits too :)

New Grad LVN who is unsure..
Absolutely go with the SNF. We had to bring an LVN over from our satellite Sub Acute Care SNF to work on our floor at the hospital last night because we had a scheduling glitch and got caught short. She was fantastic! She had been exposed to exactly the majority of sort of patients we see over in the acute care setting and not only that, she could handle pressure very well. She told me her ratio can be up to 14 patients and yeah, so she can't do IV drugs or pushes...big deal, she could do a lot of other very valuable things. I was very impressed by her professionalism and character and while I have always had respect for LVN's, she made it grow even more. Whatever you choose, be proud, be successful and I hope you find what works best for you!

CHLA New Grad Program March 2013
I am curious as to how many total they plan on taking for entire program, the number of spots per dept seem lower than the numbers I initially heard which was around 50-60 ...I should have asked last week :/
