I hate my phone
You have a very unorganized scheduler. You basically will have to put your foot down. Tell her you must know your schedule at the very minimum the last day you work. Any changes will have to be told on the clock when you come back in. More than likely you are understaffed and people are taking vacations or personal days last minute. Instead of making people schedule vacations she/he does that instead to avoid paying overtime. Happens in every business. You will have to put your foot down or it will keep happening. And don't sign any write ups you don't agree with! Thats a unneeded paper trail in their favor if they decide to terminate you. As much as I hate this advice, worst case scenerio, look for a new job. Now calling you in to see if you want to work overtime is a different story. I'm fine with that. But once the schedule is posted, YOU must approve the change, not them. Otherwise your a escape goat, not a employee. And again, don't be scared of the threats to write you up. If you are on call, then its your job to be available. But being all call means certain times, not 24/7. Like its your weekend. Next weeks its Sara's, Next week Marks..etc. Must be realistic. Also keep everything in a profesional manner. You can totally disagree with your boss and all be good if you do.

Admitting a med error on Facebook??!!
Was just thinking about what the above poster wrote. Employers use facebook, myspace, etc. and all these websites now when looking into apps. I like my life private as well. You will never will catch me posting things on the internet about me. I was shocked when I looked at my twins sisters one time. To some new grads who say they are having hard times finding a job, its something you may want to look into. I know its a rough time, but you want everything to look good nowadays.

The face of nursing is changing.
Hate to say it, but everything is turning into revolving around the Insurance Comapanies. To many people hired to save a buck rather than provide better care. I don't want to turn this into a political debate, but got to wonder if maybe the Government stepping in and setting standards is a bad thing? Otherwise I see the Insurance Companies keep raising rates every year like they do and cut you off everytime you need to make a claim. No wonder people don't have insurance if you look at there rates. If banks can get to big and cause economic diseaster, Insurance companies are just as big with just as many lobbyist. I can't help but wonder were all these "plans" money go. Wether it be auto, health, home or life. They try to weasel there way out of anything they can. However, if you want to open a policy they will gladly pull a chair up for you and offer you coffee.

Second nightshift completed
Like others have said, you need some time to adjust. Just try to figure out your schedule and stick to it. Changing your schedule you will always feel like this. Now, you still can take naps and that just like you did on day shift to help you relax, just don't over do it. Not sure what you mean about the "feel guilty" part. You still care. Thats all that matters.

My friends who get up a hour early to meet at Mcdonalds? Stop acting like you quite your life if you take a night shift job. Its exactly the same. You make time for friends, don't leave them if they want to improve there life or get a new shift.

Job Interview Protocol...haven't interviewed in years so I am nervous!
I like what previous poster said. I think 8 years is great since they know you don't job hop. Just have a nice list of questions to ask them and look them straight in the eye and be confident. There was a person on here once who said she googled "questions for a nurse to ask at interview" and I was very impressed with the questions. The questions you ask shows you care. I think thats the most important part of the interview myself. Nice link to help you prepare http://www.nursecareers.com/QuestionstoAnswer.html Nice link to ask interviewer. http://www.ultimatenurse.com/questions-to-ask-in-your-job-interview/54/ I googled and tons on info poped up. NO jobs for new nurses, I may quit school.
EVERY job out there has cut back and have people doing more work than before. I went from hating to much overtime down to 32 hours a week for a LONG time. It got so bad I had to go into my plant managers office and straight up tell him I did not put in for this job to work less than 40 hours a week. I realized I would have to work some overtime when I took the job. However me working 32 hours just so you DON'T have to file unemployment is screwing me over and hurting my family now. So either start giving me 40 or lay me off. I am not playing this game. He got me 40 hours from there on out. So its just a bad time. There's a lot of excuses as to why not hiring. I can list them all in 2 hours on my break. It will get better. Also, my wife is starting school and I'm very supportive and I am after her when she gets benefits.

First shift on night
Wrong. Your true friends will figure out a time with you to meet. It may be breakfast now instead of supper. If you keep to your schedule the entire time your on night shift you sleep 6-8 hours. The same as if you were on first shift. Drinking plenty of water is a great tip! Helps keep you awake. Ecspecially later on in the shift when you want no caffiene. Best of luck! Am cheering for you! Also have worked 7 years on night shift total.

Full time employment while attending Hondros nursing program????
My wife and I started looking. No program we found is full time employment friendly. So we decided my wife was going to go to University of Cincinnati and start here BSN part time. In 3 years when were more financially secure she will go full time and quit her job or maybe part time till clinicals. The clinical part is a 8:30 to 4:30 and requires a ton of studying, so I read. So pretty much no employment is recommended. After she gets here BSN I may go to Hondoros School for my ADN.That of course if people hire new grads so she can start a job with benefits so I can quit. Only time will tell. Right now there is no nurse shotage, so I read which scares us.

Does anyone hate their job as a nurse?
That is great advice, however we both make what the max CNA can earn and still struggle with bills. I'm pretty sure I'm ready, she is very emotional and that what scares me about her. Since I carry the insurance, she has to go to school first. So hopefully on 5 to 6 years she will be done. In 3 years she will quit her job and go full time since we will be better off financially. About us, she crys when someone elses crys, she has never seen me shed a tear. I have been told I have no emotions, which of course I do, I just control them. She won't let anybody "run" her over, but can be talked into things. If I say no, its no. She does read these, so I'm not hiding anything we don't know. As far as the job a few things scare me, but nothing I can use to,

Does anyone hate their job as a nurse?
My wife and I are going back to school for nursing. And my wife asked me if I read about anyone really hating their job as a nurse. I beileve we want to be bedside nurses of somesort, not sure what unit or the ER. I guess before she starts going back to school soon she wants to confirm she won't hate her job. She will be doing the BSN since she still has to work fulltime for the next 3 years , then quiting and going full time when more financially secure. We have a 12 year old son we adopted as well. After she is done I will quit and do the ADN in 3 years. After I get 5 years experiance we want to become travel nurses if son and parents are in good shape. So does anyone really hate their job or have any good advice for us? thank you!

Any good Psych nurse units near Dayton, OH?
One thing about Ohio is that you pay for the city you live in pretty much. If they are that high they probably are a really good school system, live on golf courses, and beatiful landscaping thourghout the city. But 2 exits up the same house may be 3/4 the price because its in a different part. One example in my neck of the woods is Indian Hill. Really expensive houses for people with to much money. The land is very hilly, roads are really curvy and in kinda poor shape. But millionaires live there. Another is Mason, a $350,000 house there will cost you $250,000 to 280,000 - 10 minutes from it and in a different school district. Same acreage, etc. I-75 runs right thru these places and you have multiple areas to choose from. Contact a real estate agent and have them e-mail you some homes in different areas and talk with them. Or just do a on line search. Some popular ones in this area are Sibcy Cline, Century 21,Coldwell Banker, Remax. I used Remax when I sold mine and they were pretty good. Also areas around hospitals are nicer ones usually, but 20 minute drive will save you thousands. Can rate the school systems as well. I'm not a expert on that subject, but I'm sure a real estate agent gets asked that all the time.

Don't use lotion at work, but when off and after a shower ecspecially. I wouldn't think lotion and latex gloves would mix well either.

TN ICF MR/DD RULES & REG's HELP
Right to work state has nothing to do with it. If it requires 2 people to safely load them into the bus, then that is the number 1 thing to remember here. What if something slips and the client gets hurt? Number 2 thing is you are young. DO NOT hurt your back for any job at any age. A hurt back can affect you for your lifetime. Tell your supervisor you need help or they need to find some other means to get them to church. If they refuse to listen, then find a new job and report, or they will just do to the next person after you. I know thats not what you want, but getting a hurt back is not what anyone wants. Please consider your life and familys as it will affect them as well. Wish you the best of luck! I would say OSHA might be a good google point. It is basically all the safety rules and probably who you would report it to, maybe, so look up OSHA. After a quick google search I found this. Don't have time to read it all, but may help. http://www.osha.gov/ergonomics/guidelines/nursinghome/draft/index.html

What do you think of this?
Most hand sainitizers are alcohol based. Use lotion to keep from drying out as much as you can put on. A good lotion. Some of the cheap ones have alcohol in as well, so be careful. Also every chemical you use are in the MSDS. Required by law. Ask your supervisior where it is located so you can read up on everything you use. Will probably have to be done on your free time, but they must list it and provide you access just like any restuarant or factory. MSDS is Material Safety Data Sheet, short form. Is a big book usually on a wall near break room.

How do *you* tell your patient "No"?
The bathroom would be a no for me, unless the they have a bad back, get dizzy, etc. However, it depends on there limits per doctor. Plus would rather do a few swipes myself just make sure its done correctly to prevent future health issues if need be. If not you could be putting medicine on sores or whatever later. I think if any person could do themselves, they will. Blinds, takes 20 seconds, just do. Consider it a favor like your wife or husband asking you while he/she is watching t.v. and being lazy. The syrup, if not to busy I would just do. Like someone said before, cold pancakes suck.:) Then get on the food service for not bringing it with the food. Don't they get packets that peel open? But the best advice I heard in this is to ask your supervisor's opinion. Should be a short conversation really, but real helpful to you! It may be a known problem about the bathroom person and patient may need a talking to to encourage him/her to do himself by yourself or supervisor.

Nightshifters
You just have to adjust your schedule and keep to it. Plan out what schedule you want now. On you off days keep that schedule as much as possible. Do not convert to a day shifter on your days off, unless absolutly neccesary, ex. kids ball game. If you do take a nap when you get home. Tips to help you sleep. 1. Block all sunlight from getting into room. Can put aluminum foil over windows, get THICK curtains, put velcro on wall and back of curtain to tuck it in. Anyway to make room dark. Towel under door if necessary. A big sock filled with newspaper works great as well. 2. Always have a fan on, even in winter to block outside noise such as neighbor mowing or kids running. Winter time face fan towards a wall so you don't freeze. 3. Get earplugs! Get the best ones to block out the noise. Mine are a light blue sponge color that I use and a very comfortable and easy to get used to. 4. Remove phone if possible. Telemarketers work during your sleep time. Tell family and friends not to call during sleep period. 5. Figure out set schedule that will work for you and stay with it. You say you are used to going to bed at 10 P.M. So now make "insert time here" your new 10 P.M. 3 hours either way on off days won't hurt you to much to adjust, but get 6 to 8 hours uninterrupted sleep. 6. No caffeine 6 hours before bedtime! 7. Melatonin is a vitamin that can help you sleep.

It has been a year-still no job
I wouldn't let i scare me to much. The way I look at it a lot have post-poned retirement or went back to work due to the bad economy to help their family out. As soon as it turns around I beleive a lot will be hiring again. Also have to look at the "baby boomers" are getting up there in age. Just stay positive and don't be to picky at first.

It has been a year-still no job
Travel Nurse wants at least a years experience however. Are you getting interviews at all? If no, relocating for a few years maybe the right choice. If you are getting interviews, may want to have some interview classes from friends or family and see if they can give you any tips during a interview. First impressions are everything. Also have lots of people look at your resume and critique it. don't get mad tho if they suggest a change.

New RN hating night shift
One thing you could do if have glass doors is put HEAVY curtain rod over the doors with the thickest drapes you can find that touch the floor. Must block light tho, so real thick. You will still have light coming out the sides, but 95 percent of light will be blocked. To help on the sides you can put velcro on the wall and sew some to other side of curtain. Velcro doesn't hurt the wall "much". You can even take the curatin to the ceiling if really want to. If you are showing off your room just unvelcro to make look normal.

New RN hating night shift
I work 3rd shift and here is my secret. Put Aluminum foil over your window to block all light. Have a fan and air plugs. Remove the phone from your bedroom if possible. Do not change your schedule unless absolutly necassary. Do not drink caffeine 6 hours before bed time. If people want to plan something with you, compromise in order to change your sleeping schedule as little as possible. 3 hours either way doesn't affect you much, but trying to become a dayshifter every time your off isn't worth it. You only sleep 1/3 of the day so you can still bank, shop, doctors appt, etc on any schedule. Unless you working 7 12 hour shifts. If your doing that, no amount of sleep tips will help you.

Can anyone give me an idea of how much financial aid I can receive?
I hope you don't have to pay till you are done. My wife is going to go part time as well to start for 3 years the in 2 years full. I thought financial aid for school loans didn't take affect until you completed the course you sign up for? We are still waiting on a reply, but I just assumed. Hope I'm right. According to a lot of people , together we make decent money, but we are struggling as is. If they make us pay as we go, we might have to wait.
