Phasing out LPN's.
Phasing out LPN"s....... I started out as a CNA, for the last three years I have been a Med-Tech, I had to go through a 8 hour training class, 3 day orientation, be checked off with a licensed pharmacist, and have done a med pass with state in our facility. I work in an assisted living facility and am responsible for 26 residents for the 3 to 11 shift. As far as I am concerned, I find this job very helpful towards my nursing career. I am currently finishing my pre-req's to start the nursing program in Aug 05. In the three years I have been a med tech, I have not had one med error, I have become alot more wiser about meds, side effects, interactions, ect..... Some of the comments I am reading on here are quite offensive from my view. We are not here to steal LPN jobs or we are not nurses true, but at the facility I work at, all the med techs we have are all current nursing students, or working towards a nursing career, degree. LTC waking residents for routine Tylenol/Benadryl on nites
Hello I too work in LTC as a med tech, here is a suggestion for you as you are right its not right to wake residents at 4:30 am for routine tylenol. Fax or call the Dr. let them know what the current order is, then ask if the order can be changed to q 6-8 hrs prn. That way if the resident wakes up in the night and needs the routine med they can have it, if they don't wake up and need it, they don't get it. That will save you from waking them when not needing too. We start our meds at 6am mostly actonel, procardia, etc. that must be taken before meals or when resident able to sit upright. My res. all in a assisted living facility therefore many of them are getting up about that time to start getting ready for breakfast. Theresa

What are some common concerns with geriatric patients?
Hi Another answer or information for you in regards to geriatric nursing. How about the loss of dignity and independence from being placed in a nursing home or adult foster care home, leading to depression. Just think most of these people have lived in their own homes most of their lives, then suddenly due to a fall or a family or Dr. opionion they can no longer manage everyday common things on their own; ie: dressing, feeding themselves, toileting...... they now have to rely on others to assist them with these tasks. What Is Your Most Gross, Yucky, Disgusting Nursing Horror Story?
I have worked in a Nursing Home for 7 years now....One of my patients was this little old lady who had dimentia but she was with it and knew what she was doing. After we put her to bed one night we went back in a bit later for rounds....usually we don't turn the big overhead lights on at night in the rooms just the over sink lights. This time for some reason we turned on the big light.......what came next is funny now but not at the time..... This lady had a BM sometime after we lied her down, she took the BM made it into little round balls, and lined them up on her bed rail, the minute we turned the light on she started flipping them at us......we had to grab the curtain between us CENA that were in the room and the flying BM balls until she flipped them all. She thought it was funny laughing all the time she did it. From that day on we all had to peek around the corner to make sure there were no BM balls waiting for us before entering the room.

please help!!!
Well I too work in a assisted living facility and took a 8 hr course and I am certified to pass meds. I am a CNA as well, but in the LTC Facility I work at the "Med Tech" can pass meds in assisted living but not downstairs in the SNF, you have to be LPN or RN for that.

CNA training
Not sure where you are from but some of the local colleges offer the CNA class as well, I know Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek offers it and I believe Kalamazoo Valley Community College may offer it as well
