  1. The schedule is great for moms (3 day a week work schedule). The pay isn't great (it'll be a paycut for me), but it's good pay if you want to work part-time or prn. I may need to do that in the future. I've wanted to be a nurse since high school many, many years ago. I've never been able to quite put my finger on why. I think it's a variety of reasons-it's an important profession, the medical field interests me, I'm a people person, and I like the idea of being able to help my family/friends.
  2. I'll be 35 when I graduate. I probably should have waited a few years so all of my kids would be in school, but I want to do it now. I was in college when I met my husband. He wanted to move out of state for school and I dropped out and went with him. I wanted to finish school, but I needed to work while he finished. Then, I went back to school for a little bit, but decided to drop out again to have kids. My parents were disappointed both times, but it worked out perfectly in my opinion. NOTHING comes before family. When I graduate two of my kids will be in public school and one in full time preschool. It's the perfect time to go back to work! So many moms that are older than me are just now starting their families. I feel so lucky to be done and start the next phase of my life. It all depends on the person. If I hadn't met my husband I would have graduated at 22, but who knows when I would have gotten married and had kids.
  3. Maybe it depends on your state? I'm in TX and we have to do everything different, even call our program ADN when everyone else calls it ASN (except CA, I believe).
  4. From what I heard, there can only be so many hours in the ADN program so they have more and more classes considered a prereq. I read it on this board from a grad from my school. I was wondering why all of these classes were considered prereqs.
  5. I'm in an ADN program and it's a prerequisite. I'm taking it right now and start the program this fall. Well, we have another nursing class (intro to basic care) that's also a prereq that I have to take this summer. I've heard these are prereqs so they can claim it's still an ADN program.
  6. I don't believe so. I haven't seen too many Montgomery students on here. Most are going to Cy-Fair and North Harris. One good thing about going to Montgomery is that our orientation is only a few weeks away!
  7. Congratulations!!!
  8. The hill country is nice. It's not near the ocean, but TX beaches are only decent south of Corpus. Do you get used to the heat and humidity? NO! I've lived here most of my life and I'm still not used to it. Austin is very liberal so that wouldn't appeal to you even though it's a very pretty. Most of TX is conservative (rural and suburbs), but the cities really aren't. Even if you move to a conservative area, it may not be what you are looking for culturally. It's...different. Maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't. You would really need to visit. Also, new grads are having a hard time finding jobs here. That might be something you may want to take into consideration. It's not impossible, but not easy.
  9. That's how my tests are, too. Just read, make notes, and go over it a few times. It will start to stick. It helps me to organize my notes so I can start to see the differences in what I'm looking at. At first, all the adverse effects and contraindictions all sounded the same. I also try to think about why it would cause that and picture it in my mind. That helps makes sense of it so I'm not just memorizing it. Thank god I only have one test left!
  10. What about UT Tyler or Houston? They are all different in terms of how hard it is to get in.
  11. There are two groups of annoying people, imo. The ones who talk bad about the teacher, get annoyed about everything we have to do, and complain when they don't do well on a test (it couldn't possibly be their fault) are typically younger. Then, the ones that talk too much about their personal experiences and ask questions about something we just covered because they weren't listening are typically older. I'm somewhere in the middle (32) and make friends with classmates older and younger. Not all young classmates are immature and not all older classmates are annoying, of course. A lot of the guys are the biggest prima donna, gossipers I've ever met in my life, but not all. I'm friends with the few that are cool, just not all.
  12. That sucks! Sorry, but I don't think there's anything you can do except ignore her. I'm amazed she hasn't been talked to yet by the instructor. It sounds like she needs to get a firmer grip on this lady. I'm in my early thirties and consider myself a spring chicken.
  13. Or does anyone know if the Fast Track hep B is accepted at Lone Star? My doctor said the soonest I could be done was four months. If you get your first this month you could have them done before the start of school. You'll miss the deadline, but it may be okay as long as you have them done by the semester starts (Aug 30). I would make my first appointment ASAP.
  14. I'm glad I'm not the only one. Maybe they're just getting them out late? I just got my second hep b shot. I'll get the last one right before the deadline in July. Have you started yours?
  15. Anyone get their "blue card' yet? I did my background check o3-31-10 and have yet to relieve it. Do i nee it by April 14 for the orientation, or so i have to have it done (go to the background check place) by April 14? I got in at Montgomery, but I haven't even gotten my e-mail yet to do the background check. I'm starting to wonder if I should call. Is there anyone else who is going to Montgomery that has or hasn't gotten the e-mail to start the background check?
  16. I'm studying this right now. It is confusing on where in the loop of henle everything is absorbed and reabsorbed. I finally just drew a chart. It's for pharm so I'm not even sure we'll be tested on it. Our teacher is more concerned about the nursing aspect than the a&p. I always just remember water follows sodium and na is exchanged for potassium.
  17. Go ahead and vent away, but I'm honestly not worried about any of those things. Maybe it's age? Someone can sit next to me and brag all day and I would listen with half an ear and a polite smile. Don't let anyone that doesn't matter in your life affect your attitude. It's just not worth it.
  18. From my understanding at the information session all of the applicants are loaded into one database and they are organized according to scores. Each school is given a list of people that made it in to their school from that one database. Since it's a central database I doubt just North Harris would be having the problem. Maybe the lady your friend spoke to wasn't able to access it? She was probably only trying to pull her up as a student and couldn't find any nursing info in there. Even though I got accepted to Montgomery, "my records" doesn't have anything about it. I would imagine only the people in the nursing dept could view who was accepted, especially since nothing is final yet (with people declining and alternates getting accepted).
  19. As long as you have A's in one of your A&P classes, psych, and eng, it doesn't matter. Take a look at the scoring chart they have on their website.
  20. Congrats apriljoy and kathrine on your UT acceptances! I was going to apply, but I didn't think I could handle the course load. songbird-Time flies and you'll be in the nursing program before you know it. Part of me wishes I would have applied last year "just to see."
  21. My letter of intent is due back April 7, but that's for Montgomery. I think our letters were mailed out before North Harris's. I can only imagine how frustrated you are! If you don't have a letter by Friday, just call. I can't really comment on the physical exam docs on the website because I have no idea, but I did see them, too. You could always print it out and take it with you to the doctor. It may save you a trip. If it's the wrong one I'm sure it would be no trouble transcribing it to the new document without an office fee.
  22. I keep seeing pharmacology come up as something to go over before nursing school starts. I'm taking it right now (actually taking a break from it as I type this) as a prereq. Is it because this is something fundamental that you need to know that ties in with the rest of your classes or is it because it's a difficult class, or both?
  23. People literally fight over home daycare providers around here. I doubt I'll be able to find one knowing what friends went through when they were looking for someone. I looked into full-time care, but it would be $1400 a month for the two younger ones and an extra $144 a month (2 days only) for before school care for my oldest. That's crazy! I told my mil about my schedule and she wasn't too happy. She's going on vacation for two weeks in September, too. That just about knocked the wind out of me. I only decided to pursue nursing because she said she would help me out. Now that I'm finally here, I feel like she's changing her mind. Ugh.
  24. Oh, I see what you mean. That's right. In that problem it would just mean two. It would be 2 grains only if it had a gr in front of it.
