Travel Nursing. ....Hopefully soon
I am interested travel nursing . I'm hoping to start in March or April 2013. I have been looking at PNS , cross country ,and Talemed. I would like to go to you North Carolina, Arizona, Alaska, or Florida. At that time I will have about 18 months of experience in Med-surg/neuro. I would like to get opinions if anyone has work for any of companies. Opinions for first time travelers of these companies . Does travel have down periods? Some companies say that they will fly you out to your assignment. Is this true? I have also read that you need to have some money saved prior to leaving on your sign up because some cost are fronted by you? One of the places that is listed with assignments is IHS. Any comments or advice are appreciated.

Off to travel....soon I hope.
I am interested in becoming a travel nurse. I have been scanning articles and travel sites. I have also been reading a few threads on this site. I would like to begin traveling in late March or at the beginning of April. I will have about 18 months of Med-Surg/ Tele-Neuro experience by that time. From what I have read (please correct me if I am wrong), I need to have some money saved (atleast 1000 or more to begin) because I will or may have to pay upfront cost of travel. I have found some companies that say that they will purchase the ticket for the traveler or set up hotel for travel to and from location. Housing? Does anyone know this to be true? I am looking at AZ, FL, CA. I would eventually like to goto HI,VI, or Guam. If you have had recent experience (2012) can you please tell about it. For those who have worked with PNS, TaleMed, CrossCountry what are you opinions regarding those companies? Should I sign up for more than one? Also is there a period of time during the year that travel nursing slows ie:lack of jobs (seasonal issues)? I would also like to hear from RNs that may have had similar RN experience before starting to travel. Thank you in advance for your responses.

Discrimination, discrimination.. Tell me what you think.
Please keep your head up. Discrimination happens, we know it. People can state it doesn't happen but we know that it does. I CANNOT say this is what happened to you in this situation. You have to keep going and apply for other jobs. Trust and believe that you will get a job. I applied all of the US. Telephone interviewed in KY, AZ, and FL. I just kept applying about 100 times if not more. Keep applying and praying for the job that you want.

Gender/Race info on applications - to answer or not to answer?
I am not answering the question anymore. I will check female but not the race to see if it helps me get a job. Right now the only people I know that have gotten jobs in the hospital knows someone, managers or directors...someone in management...all of whom were white. New grads that were offered jobs that did not know anyone, were all white males. Im sorry I just do not think that you are at disadvantage. I do think the other issue is based on what a person looks like. For example: attractive vs unattractive, tall and thin vs everyone else.

Ohio Board of Nursing
It has been a few weeks that since I took and passed my boards and I have not received my license yet. Everyone that has taken their NCLEX has gotten theirs most of them live outside of Columbus. I have called twice the second time the person told me 7 to 14 business days was the policy. I was told 7 to 10 days first...called on the 10 day after mail had run and was then told 7 to 14 business days was the policy. Still waiting. Person said that they would tell me what to do if it had come by this week. Why she could give me the heads up, IDK.

New Nurse Issues the CNAs
As a former aide/tech, I have been in situations where a new RN regardless of age speak to aides like they are dumber than a box of rocks. Like another poster said, if situations are explained aides tend to do better. RESPECT goes BOTH ways. I have personally had to go to a charge RN or Director over a "younger" RN that was rude and disrespectful. I am an ADULT not a child that should be talked down to, because at the time I didn't have initials behind my name. The RN had issues with every tech that she came in contact with because she felt as though we were less than her. Needless to say she did not make it out of orientation. Similar type of RNs do not tend to last that long, atleast on the floor I where I was a tech. Also as an African American person, assuming your DON was AA, We do not "all" get excited when we speak. Stereotyping is irritating. She may have been trying to smooth things over. If the aide continues to her unprofessional behavior, write her up. You should keep/begin a paper trail and keep a copy of all write-ups. That way you have written proof of the problem. As an professional adult (regardless of job) I follow the chain of command. Tell person then supervisor, to director and finally to HR. I will not stoop to their level to the point of arguing at work. I personally think that when people think they get someone "told" what they really have done is reduced the level of respect that the person may have had for you.

NCLEX-RN books - Which ones to buy?
I used the same books. I also passed with 75 questions. I liked Saunders 5th edition because it has more subjects like: Delegation, Ethical/Legal, etc. along with the basic body subjects. After taking the NCLEX it seemed more straightforward then any test I took in school. Good Luck on your boards.

One of the best...Invaluable to the unit
****UPDATE**** I went into the hospital yesterday to get a letter of recommendation. My manager printed out the letter. I reinerated that I wanted to stay with my current company hospitals but wanted to keep my options open soI was applying for that position too, she agreed...after completing the letter on the way out of the office she stated that she had to do an interview. HMMM...interview huh? Okay . I check last night to see if there were any jobs open on the unit, nothing was posted. I look today like I do almost everyday on the job boards....Yep there it was. I at a loss of words. She has previously stated and knows that I am a good employee and still nothing. Heck maybe she is faker than a $1k bill. I could see if I had not mentioned working in the department but that is not the case. Would it be rude to ask for my resume back since she had no interest in hiring me anyway...Okay no I wouldn't do that.. VENTING and FRUSTRATED

bad nursing care rant
I have ben the aide in that situation and a visitor too. We also have hourly rounds to do the 5Ps..pain potty position etc. I have head pts say that they hadn't had a bath in a week and I know that they had a bath for the last two days because I gave it to them. On the opposite side, I have visited with someone that no one check for the 3 or 4 hours. During the last hour or so of visiting the patient repeatedly requested medicine. I went to the desk to speak with the RN only to get we will be there in a min. RN in station laughing and looking at a magazine. Twice. To no avail. They had a board telling here last pain med was given 8 hrs before; next dose available had been almost 2 hrs prior. PRN med. I spoke with the charge and also told my friend to ask for the manager/director in the am. Finally before leaving, RN came to give meds and went to change dressing without washing hands rubbing her face and nose snottin' and c***. ....Nope not going to happen wash your hands please thank you so much. Dropped supplies on ground in H2O she spilled She was going to try and use them. The other ABDs were sitting in the H2O that didnt reach the floor. OMG You have to be ******* kidding me right. Nope not using those to pack in anywhere on her. It was pretty bad. End of shift thank God a new RN came in. My friend said she was so much better. Mind you she had just had a C-section and ended up with an infection in c-section incision that had to be opened up more just to treat. As consumers/patients you must take an active role and tell RNs when something is wrong..If they don't fix it go above their head...follow the chain of command. I am always professional when approaching RN/Manager because I do not ever want to have someone use "she was rude or ignorant." No, I just want you to do you job. There are good and bad in all professions including nursing. BTW No code calls on unit...no rapid responses, during my time on the unit.

Stress of finding a job
I currently work at a hospital (for almost 4 years as a tech) and still do not have a position lined up. Almost every job that I have applied for I have kicked out of the system. The people I know that have been offered jobs knows someone higher up...mom, aunt, bff is someone or knows someone even higher. I have about 2 weeks before I take my boards and it is really hard to stay positive when others you know who work at your or surrounding hospitals already have jobs lined up. I have been thinking of pushing my test back because I will not have a job. Again I am trying to stay positive. Thinking that I stayed at a place (trying to be loyal) when I should have moved on.:smackingf

Mental health ATI RN
My suggestion would be to make sure you do your readings. Do your ATI practice test and remediate. Then read again. Most sections have practice test listed in the learning system RN section along with the ones that your teacher must provide an access # and password.

Dilemma! Should I change schools??
Is there something wrong with your current school? Is the school having issues, ei: pass rates, clinical sites?
