Looking for fellow black nurses!
Merry Christmas everyone I am so glad so see so many people respond! a couple of things: 1. I sent a message about a seperate thread, I was told it would be brought up at the next staff meeting so mabey if others on here will make the request in support it will be taken seriously...and to the non-minority poster who commented that this is the general board we could request our own...please make the request as well. 2. It is time to stop defending ourselves we are doing nothing wrong. This is the largest nursing board on the web and we are here, Lets eat drink and be merry in a sense I am so happy to have met all of you we are wasting time feeding into the ignorance and they will shut the thread down if we continue to stand up for ourselves (uppity lol get it...JK!) 3. Please friend each other so we can keep contact if they close the thread. 4. To everyone with something positive to say thank you so much, To those who just want to argue that is not what we are here for THIS BOARD IS NOT TO FACILITATE HOSTILITY! 5. Last of all can you guys come up with other topics you would like to discuss so that if we do get our own thread we can get it moving and keep it organized! I am really hoping this works out if it is decided that we are not welcome here or cannot gather here do not worry if this is something people are interested in (which seems to be the case) just remember where there is a will there is a way! Just a comment about minority nurses I have been there and checked it out but honestly it dosnt have the reach that this site does...This is an excellent nursing site and has resources for all nurses and I dont want to be seperate I just want to help create another powerful resource that some of the members of this site need.

Looking for fellow black nurses!
started training as the nurse supervisor of my new job today at a LTC facility and let me tell you so far Im loving it! ssdd though I was in training with a phillipino woman and a white woman and man and another AA woman all of them very nice. As we went through the facility to tour people would say to me and the other AA woman and the phillipina oh are you are new aides? and Go to the other female and ask LPN? The looks on their faces when they saw our tags and the director introduced us...Me the new supervisor the other AA female as the new LPN and the rest as aides. They were very nice but It is so funny how others assume and I mean other AAs as well! It was a great day though and I am so happy I took this Job. It is a huge facility and very very clean not a bad smell anywhere and everyone was up running around caring for their patients now that is my kind of place!

Looking for fellow black nurses!
Actually if you read the original post and look I am reaching out to all minorities in the field....hispanics included read the posts that are posted and see what experiences people are having I am not trying to group AA in a group to seperate ourselves I am trying to create a resource so that we can communicate about our experiences and successes . You say you can relate please share your story instead of putting down what I am trying to do (and trust me I believe you can relate!)

Looking for fellow black nurses!
WOW Hello everyone I am glad to see so many people respond!!! I see a couple of posters saying what I expected , why seperate yourselves, we were a team, what if I posted looking for fellow white nurses....Well Let me say this It is always easy to look in and think every thing is fine! Untill you experience a situation you cannot truly understand. If you are reading this post as a non AA nurse really read it and notice our experiences and problems because you will see they are similar and then if you are really about uniting nurses make others aware and do what YOU can to make a difference that will do far more to make us a team than do discourage an attempt to reach out to each other, Did you do that on the mens forum? Like it or not race is an issue and I dont know any AA nurse who likes it! It can be lonley and discouraging at times to be different from everyone. In my nursing class I can guarantee if you asked my classmates we were always a team, they have no recollection of how they treated me at first no one listend to me no one wanted to work with me no one took me serious. I dont fault them people have ideas about others that they are often not even aware of. I turned out to be one of the top 5 students in the group! I never held a grudge I was patient untill they started getting to know me and it took a a teacher treating me so unfairly that another student finally stood up and said enough .... My school gave me a formal apology before graduation and realized some of their flaws not to facilitate cultural diversity they realized that I had a problem and kept it to myself because there was NO ONE there that I could go to and trust they had no policies in place and unless you are at a university this can happen very easily. Now JRW after reading this can you say that you dont see why I am seeking other AA nurses? I want to learn and grow and I, no we deserve that I dont care if I see black, white, hispanic, gay, male, Jewish, catholic, disabled or heck even martians looking to meet others like them people are different and in order to make the world better we need to acknowledge it and gain respect for each other instead of pretending we are all the same!

Looking for fellow black nurses!
Yes it is important but the point you dont understand is that even when an introduction is given some people just dont get it...they want the "real" nurse. If you have experienced it you will know exactly what it is. I know it happens to men as well. People have an image of what the nurse should look like in their head, and if you dont meet that criteria...they don't get it. The comment about the hair I so get it, I have very long natural hair and no one believes that it is mine and then they always want to touch it *** who touches their nurses hair???? And the comment I dont have a problem with you people lol heard that a lot in school. Blackheart we definatly have issues unique to our race and culture and you will see if you follow the thread others will try to discount what is going on for something else like the introduce yourself comment.... Trust me even when we do introduce ourselves this happens sometimes. I agree all nurses need to support each other but that is not always the case and I am so glad to meet other AA nurses It makes me feel like I am not alone in this!

I was just thinking about this line while in the shower today...I agree nothing wrong with being a cna but why is that always the assumption? When I graduated at the pinning they did the nurses oath and had all of the nurses stand and say it my instructors were like your mother is a licensed nurse wow....I was thinking *** they knew she worked in healthcare but who knows what they assumed.- Looking for fellow black nurses!
Hello glad to meet you guys! I know we exist which is why I am reaching out. I am hoping that this site will add a board for AA nurses, they have a mens board so hey why not? I come from a family of nurses so I did not realize that there were not more black nurses untill I got out in the world and it was a shock!- Post here about your new grad hiring woes....
Ohio is not where it is at right now....We have so many new grads living here who cannot find work, I can't believe that other states are hearing there is work here because It's a lie...Good Luck keep looking one thing is that Ohio is big try other cities and pray you will find something.- Looking for fellow black nurses!
I am looking for other black nurses (actually minority nurses) to communicate and network with. Although I come from an area with a pretty even mix of races in the nursing field there are very few other black nurses, I have dealt with many unique experiences and I would like to hear what others are going through, triumphs, successes, let downs, failures......I have looked everywhere and I can not find any group to fill this need. This is the largest nursing network on the web right now so I know that we are here!- Looking for Textbooks used or cheaper price
can you find someone at your school who already took the class to borrow theirs? Just a suggestion my other would be amazon and the poster above already suggested that!- If you could build your perfect Nursing Home......how would it be?
I agree with the childcare on grounds. I worked in childcare for 12 years and we were in a building with a LTC and adult daycare (yeah that sounds dignified :stone) I know work in the LTC and from both sides it is amazing to watch the young and old interact and how much they benefit from each other.- Skirts in the OR
perineal fall out OMG I can't stop laughing I keep thinking about the first meeting where the issue was brought up I see a man all serious saying ...the next issue I would like to address ...clears throat...is um the problem of perineal fall out. :roll:roll:roll- Chemistry and Biology in spring2010 = crazy??
If you are a strong student go for it! Just stay on top of your game. I took A&P II, Micro, Organich chem, and Pharm at one time It was very time consuming but very doable (not a real word lol)- Passed NCLEX RN yesterday
UHHHH CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!*wine- Do you call IN or OUT sick?
It's probably regional like soda vs pop! We say call off, I have heard call in but I have never heard anyone say call out! Live and Learn!- HELP!!!! All the nursing nurses...
I know it isnt the standard but if the child is able to hold their head up and the toungue thrust is gone and the child wont take a bottle it is an option ... I have an older child and when she was a baby 3 months was the reccomendation then it was 4 .... My dr. suggested this after I freaked cause my son wouldnt take a bottle It worked out. Im just giving advice based on my experience and no cereal at 3 months is not a first choice but in my case it was a saving grace. (rice and breastmilk)- HELP!!!! All the nursing nurses...
I am breastfeeding my third child. Here are some hints start exposing your baby to expressed breastmilk in a bottle given by someone other than you try a few to find a nipple the baby likes. Invest in a good breast pump (electric) and start pumping I suggest pumping one side while nursing on the other freeze this milk untill you are ready to use it label it with the date and time. Even if you do these things your baby may not take a bottle! Breastfed babies are extremely adaptable If the baby is 3 months or older introduce cereal so that the caregivers can feed the baby while in their care the baby may nurse constantly during the 12 hours you are home! This is what my son did nursed all night on days that I worked and went to school and did just fine. Take your pump to work with you and pump while on break this will help keep your milk supply up, employers must provide an area for you to do this in on your break. You can do it!!!! I just weaned my son he is a year and a half, and I am currently nursing my 4 month old feel free to PM me with any questions if you like.- Things Patients Have Taught Me NOT To Do
- My first nursing job!!
Congratulations!!! isn't it wonderful to see your hopes and dreams come to life?- Manipulative Boss?
Be thankful but be realistic I agree dont burn any bridges but you have to do what makes you happy. If you have an oppourtunity to do something that will make you happy go for it! Dont ask for more money, you are leaving for a job that pays less so money isnt the issue if they pay you more you will still be bored and restless. Congratulations on the new job.- My nursing dreams are over . I failed.
during school I worked for administration and here is something that may be helpful. Get out your handbook and look up the proceedure to file for re-admission after being dropped. I found out that students who failed and were given a formal dismissal from the college ( a dismissal was given only after a stint on academic probation did not work) they had to write a formal letter requesting re-admisson listing the reasons that they did not do well and a plan to solve the problem and succeed. Have you ever been on probation? If not you may still have a chance, if you recieve financial aid you may have to pay for the class that you failed more than 2x out of the pocket. A little advice for the future if you have to quit school for any reason and you are not finished take an incomplete at this point you can either pick up where you left off or start it over again. Good luck dont give up do some research and meet with an advisor! - Looking for fellow black nurses!
