  1. That is just adding insult to injury.
  2. Congratulations, perfexion!!
  3. At least it looks like they are issuing temporary licenses again. I applied for one as well but they just kept my money and never sent me one.
  4. Could be, I don't think it makes much difference when you send the transcripts. I was told it takes 1-2 weeks from the date the check was cashed (at minimum) before anybody actually looks at the application, so that would allow enough time to request the transcripts then. I am hoping that people get their licenses quicker in the near future as the BON & Breeze hopefully work out the kinks with the new data system.
  5. Yay, I finally received my license number!! Short timeline: I applied 07/03/14 and did live scan fingerprints & nursesys that day. Transcripts were sent out 07/08/14 directly from the school. Cash was checked 08/01/14, my application popped up on Breeze on 08/01/14 as "transcript hx missing" (which does not mean much) and changed to "pending" on 08/06/14. 09/26/14: received endorsement. Total wait time: 12 weeks from mailing out applications, 8 weeks from the time the check was cashed. I am not sure if this had anything to do with it, but after waiting all these weeks without any communication from the BON I finally called the 1-800-838-6828 number on 09/25/14. I talked to some nice lady who told me that fingerprints were approved and there was no note that anything was missing, and to call back in a week to check on my status again, since supposably the BON was still processing early July applications. Today my number is popping up on Breeze. Coincidence? I am not so sure... Wishing speedy proccessing time for all the ones still waiting!
  6. I think this is what bothers me the most about the whole thing. We are not applying for an ATT number so we can take the NCLEX. We are licensed nurses coming from other States in the U.S. I find it ridiculous that we even have to show transcripts of our prerequisites. Why do we have nationwide accreditations if they are not being recognized? OK, will step off my soap box now.. And of course no news on my license yet either.
  7. You're welcome, good luck on your path!
  8. The beauty of the nursing world is that (in theory) you can work in any area you like, or change from one area to another as you grow as an RN. Nowadays, pretty much every nurse is a "general" nurse fresh out of school. You specialize (maybe for the last time, maybe for the first of many) once you start working in a field. You could try to get work as a new RN in an area you really enjoyed during clinicals, or be completely open-minded and start in whatever area you are able to land a job in. Many new grad nurses have a hard time finding that first position because a lot of employers do not want to spend the time and money to train you, but on the other hand, you come without "bad habits" from other jobs. After a year or two in your job you can see if you like that area or if you'd like to move. Even experienced nurses do not necessarily have specialized experience when they change fields (they will have it from their old specialty, but not the new specialty), but it is usually a bit easier to change fields with SOME/ANY hospital experience under your belt. A lot of NP schools prefer that you get some RN time under your belt before you start NP school and I personally agree with that. That way, you will also feel more confident in your choice of specialization later on. There are always more jobs for nurses than NPs.
  9. Perfexion, did the lady you talk to actually look up your application in the computer with your application number? Did she explain a bit more about what number you would have been able to call and receive a license the same day?! (If so, I'll grab my phone right now!) The reason why I ask is because when I called a few days after my check cleared and I received my application number, the lady I talked to looked up my application number and said it was not even in the system yet. She said that it can take at least 2 weeks from the time the check is cleared for the envelope with the application paperwork to make it to somebody's desk who will actually physically take out the application paperwork (other than grab the check) and look if everything is complete and start working on it. I am comparing experiences in this forever-lasting process. The same lady also told me that the Breeze status is not always accurate. I get the impression they are not too happy with the Breeze software over at the BON just yet.. Oh, and no update whatsoever yet on my application process, for those who have seen my previous posts..
  10. No, I don't think it makes sense to even apply for a position without a CA license. I cannot be hired until I have one, even if I do currently hold a license in another State. With how slow the CA BON is, I doubt that prospective employers will hold a position for weeks or months for me, even if I was qualified. A friend of mine just did a similar relocation, and her experience was that employers would not even look at her applications without a CA license. Now, of course I could be wrong and I would think that this is also a totally different scenario for travel nurses. How about you, are you already looking/ having a job offer?
  11. Turned my application in the beginning of July even and no change in my "pending" status as of today. It is very frustrating.
  12. It's the worst when you get 2 people from the same company telling you opposite info.. I called my college first and they sent me to getmytranscripts. When I called gmt, the guy on the phone told me about the form upload options and said that the option would show up during the transcript ordering process, and it did without any issues. If I remember correctly, the option does show later in the ordering process, not right away. You can upload a pdf file, not sure if you could update a .jpg as well. Hope that helped.
  13. I used that website. I printed out the transcript request form from the CA BON, filled my part out (I think it is the top part), and then scanned it to my computer as a pdf. On the getmytranscripts website is an option to upload forms, and during your transcript request process it will give you the option at some point to do so.
  14. I have seen ER techs hang around a department way too long, and way past the point where "respected experience" turned into "acting outside the scope of practice". I would not expect much success from talking to management, but I would tell the tech very clearly that he cannot enter orders under your login. Change your password immediately, like others suggested, and log yourself out all the time, no matter how painful. Document in your charting if the tech discusses preemptive dx with the patient - patients often forget who exactly upset them when they fill out complaint cards.. Beyond that, I would not rock the boat too much. This btw is coming from a former ER tech. The tech works under the medical director's license - as an EMT he is certified, not licensed.
  15. No, still waiting.
  16. Go with a check, that way you know when it was cashed and if you can view the cashed check online on your bank's website then you might be able to see your application number. Mine was handwritten on the check. My check took app. 4 weeks to get cashed, and according to the board it can take another 2+ weeks after that before they actually start working on your application.
  17. You can sign up on Breeze with that information plus your Application number (you might have to leave off the first digit of that number), but, as you said, it might not do much good to do so if the status on Breeze is unreliable anyways. No news here, still waiting. Applied the beginning of July, so still some time to wait I guess. This would be so much easier if we could at least work with our other State licenses while they are processing our transfer, so we are not out of a job for months.
  18. Hi everybody, chiming in here as well. I too am waiting for my CA license via endorsement. Check cashed on 08/01/14. On Breeze, my status states "pending, educational hx missing", so I called since my transcripts were sent out the beginning of July. I was told that it can take app. 2 weeks after the check clears for an employee to actually start working on the application, and that the "pending, educational history missing" status on Breeze is a "default status" that automatically pops up and does not mean anything.. Not feeling very reassured or happy with this answer
  19. How about offering a 2 weeks notice when you sit down with your manager in person to quit? Tell him/her why you are quitting (work hours, family) and offer the 2 weeks as a goodwill gesture. You can have 2 written notices prepared, one with the 2 week notice, one without. Chances are you are not going to be taken up on it, but you might be able to leave the place this way without burning bridges.
  20. 1) Cleaning up incontinent patients with C-Diff diarrhea. A lot. Often. 2) Unhooking completely hooked up patients (to monitors and IV fluids/meds) to help them to bedside commode. Help patient back to bed, rehook (unless you have to leave all leads on, then it is a new challenge). Collect stool/urine/emesis sample. 3) Assist in pelvic exams 4) Medicate for pain. Repeatedly. Or medicate for other complaints. Collect samples for newly ordered tests (blood tubes, swabs) 5) Convince male patient who is high fall risk that no, he cannot stand up to use urinal. 6) Insert foleys, NG tubes, perform enemas, draw blood cultures, etc 7) Order/Bring food for patients and family 8) Educate on discharge 9) Documentation (really 90% of your time), including Vital Signs, actions performed, med administration, discharge, etc. 10) Handover report to floor nurse. Making copies for transfer. Organizing transfer (if out of facility). Filling out more paperwork. Making more copies. Transporting patient to new floor. 11) Cleaning rooms, restocking rooms 12) EKGs, IV starts 13) Handle family members Level II Emergency Department, suburb of big city
  21. Emergency Departments are different throughout the country, but the Emergency Deps in our area do not hire CNAs, only IV certified EMTs. Also, our ICUs do not hire CNAs. Find out what the requirements for the hospitals in your area are. If you want to go emergency care, I would definitely recommend EMT. If your hospitals take CNAs then you might want to go that route as you can work in more than one specialty as a CNA. Either way, the experience can help you get a foot in the door, especially if you continue to work throughout school, and will always look good on your resume.
  22. Our providers are all really good about discussing DNRs with family members. However, the timing of these discussions is not the best when it happens in the ER, while the family is emotional and stressed about the patient. Unfortunately, many families have given no thoughts to DNR and end of life decisions despite their family members being sick and declining for quite some time. In my opinion, this topic should be brought up much earlier by their PCPs, when everybody is calm and can discuss options in peace and quiet.
  23. Yup, your patient is not going to wait for you to whip out your phone and google Vfib as he is about to tank and needs some pads attached.
  24. Come on...Just one sentence prior to this you state that you "...respect other people's religious choices...," yet it is too much to ask of you to be quiet while they take a minute (or less in many cases!) to do something that is very meaningful to them. (BTW, you can also just walk away from them, you know? you don't have to stand there and listen...) What do you think it means to respect other people's religious choices? If you finished reading the other half of that sentence you quoted you would see that I said IN THEIR OWN TIME. I really do not care what you believe in, and if praying is for you, then I don't care either, as long as you do not involve me in this activity. You might call it dramatic, but I am fed up by many people's religious sense of one-sided entitlement. I am expected to respect other's beliefs by quietly having to stand by and wait patiently while they finish their prayer. How is that respecting my lifestyle in which prayer has no place? Now, if I can walk away or leave the room while you (not you personally) pray so I can move on with my life then I have no issue with what you do, because again, you do it on your own tine. Unfortunately, I have been in many situations where walking away is not an option, and I am expected to wait quietly until prayer is over, and that is not ok in my opinion. I will try and keep my answer short here, but let me say that as a non-religious person, it is not a sign of comfort for me when a caretaker comes into my room and asks me if we can/want to pray. That is a very personal question and more often than not sparks an uncomfortable moment when I tell that person that I am absolutely not interested. Maybe it is because I am white and live in Suburbia, but I have found that people are so convinced that I will happily agree to prayer (read, am of their religion) that they are most often taken aback my my refusal. The resulting awkwardness on their part and annoyance on mine, in my opinion, damages the patient-caretaker relationship more than it helps. Now, if the patient requests spiritual support then by all means provide it. Personally, I offer to call in a chaplain or other spiritual support to provide that care.
  25. It is offensive because it forces somebody else's lifestyle (in this case, the act of praying) on somebody who does not want this act of praying. I am a spiritual person but not religious, and I cannot stand it if somebody asks me if I pray or offers to pray with/for me. I do not pray and I do not want to be involved in praying. Just "choosing to ignore it" still means I am subjected to it, but I do not WANT to be subjected to it. I do not want to participate in it, not even passively. I respect other people's religious choices and have no problem with them praying in their own time away from me. I do not think that I should have to spend time staying quiet while you pray, as it is wasting my time. Interestingly, in my very personal experience over the years, I find that none of my Jewish, Hindu, or Pagan friends ever ask me to pray with or for me. It always ends up being over-eager Christians who do that.
