CPNRE sept 15, 2010
I, too, will be writing the CPNRE tomorrow! Eeeeks! I've just been using the prep guide and reading up in some of my texts and Internet about some disease processes. I have no idea how ready I am, but I guess it's too late now. Best of luck!!

Ratemyprofessors.com?
I use it every term and have rated some myself. I take the comments with a grain of salt but most seem fairly accurate.

Any Canadian Labour and Delivery Nurses??
I've taken other general courses at BCIT, but nothing directly related to nursing. I am taking my nursing at Douglas College and may do the specialty nursing at BCIT once I've been working as a RN for a while. Good luck!

Any Canadian Labour and Delivery Nurses??
I am quite sure you need to complete the BCIT specialty programs before working in these areas. If you get hired on at some of the hospitals here in the lower mainland (probably on medical or surgical wards?) they will pay for your specialty schooling and your full-time wages while you attend school. The only catch is that you must work in that specialty in that particular hospital for about a year after completing the courses otherwise they'll ask you to pay back the costs of tuition. A lot of the specialty programs are only about 12 weeks long. You can go here for more information.

Vancouver Nurses
There's also Yanni's (?sp) in New Wesminster on Columbia Street. It's kind of hidden, but should have a sign pointing you in the right direction from the street area. I haven't been there in about 3 years though, so I don't know what their current selection is like.

Are we all old???
I'm 28 and have just started my 3rd year of the program. I always wanted to become a nurse, it just took me a long time to get my butt in gear and focus on schooling.

'Real' nurse's kit for toddler play?
I was going to reply to this thread and recommend something similar to that. I had that set, too, when I was a child. I loved it.

77% Rule
At my college we have to get a minimum of 60% in each course or we have to repeat the course. We also have to achieve a term average of 65%.
-

My faves were maternity, neuro, and surgical.

Calculator not permitted?!
We're allowed to use calculators in clinical and in class, but we have been warned that we will not be able to use them when writing the CRNE.

Where were your clinicals?
I've had my clinicals in various hospitals. - medical for several rotations - surgical (got a day in the O.R. and a day in Day Care) - maternity - pediatrics - respiratory I've either taken public transit or car pooled to my clinicals. The closest one was a 5 min skytrain ride away. The farthest took me about half an hour or so by transit.

Canadian Nursing Students
I'm in my 3rd year of the nursing program at Douglas College in New Westminster. I'm working toward become a RN.

Were you scared of needles or blood?
I was terrified of needles before I started nursing school. I wouldn't stand to look at or hold them. Ugh! Made me so squeamish. It made me sick to think about having to poke people with them. Now I'm fine and have no issues at all - although IM injections still make me a bit nervous - I hate the dart throwing/jabbing motion.

any opinions about ubc?????
Are you talking about nursing school? The only negative thing I've heard from a few people about it is that they don't start their clinical practice until their 3rd year so they don't get the same amount of experience as other nursing schools. One RN I talked to during my last clinical placement said she had no idea how to take a blood pressure until 3rd year. I reckon it'd be quite stressful and frustrating having to wait so long to get into hospital to utilize the skills.

Where to live in Vancouver!
You want to stay far, far away from Whalley (North Surrey). Queensborough is ok, but you'd have to bus it to the skytrain. What about near Lougheed in Burnaby/Coquitlam? Or the Brentwood area in Burnaby? I live in New Westminster on the quay. It's nice on this side of the tracks, but the skytrain area has become very creepy - lots of druggies and homeless. I'm hoping it'll get better once they build the new condos and shopping area.
-
What was your HARDEST class?
Pathophysiology.

any other students trying to lose weight?
I'm on WW since Feb. I've lost about 25 lbs so far, but have been stuck at the same weight for the past few weeks. Need to get my butt in gear if I'm going to lose the remaining 30 lbs or so.
-
Are you graded on your clinicals?
We get Mastery or Non Mastery.
-
What do you wear while in College?
We wear regular clothes to the college and scrubs to clinical. White runners are usually fine.
