Healthcare Facilities running out of medications + supplies
We recently ran out of tissues... Which wasn't that bad until we had a hospice patient on the unit that passed away and we were unable to provide tissues to the many grieving family members. Our clerk said she was so embarrassed to have to hand them rolls of toilet paper as their loved one was dying. Just to top it off, the clerk notified our unit manager and she replied that she couldn't do anything about it and to ask the nursing supervisor to go to the grocery store to pick some up. How lame..

Nclex RN June 2011 lets study together.
taking my NCLEX- RN this friday! I am so excited. I have been trained well, worked very hard, and feel like I am gonna rock this test. You all can do it! Have faith in your education, professors, and most of all... YOURSELVES! You survived nursing school, you can survive the NCLEX.. Just keep your head on straight and remember, when you panic, you are not able to make rational decisions, so stay calm and THINK! Rock on, people!

Should Nurses Blow the Whistle?
As a nurse, it is my duty to advocate for my patient. If this means I am considered a "whistle blower" if I report safety violations or wrong-doings, then yes, it is our job. I would rather lose my job fighting for what is right and just, than to keep working knowing that patients safety is being jeopardized. I really hope that in the near-future, whistle blowing will be encouraged and protected with the intention of reducing injury, harm, and/or injustice to patients and the personnel that take care of them.

Guillotine amputation
I am a junior in nursing school and today in my med/surg rotation, I got to take care of a woman who had just had this procedure done yesterday.. It was unbelievable! We didnt really look into what it meant by guillotine amputation in the chart so we went in to do the dressing change and boy were we shocked when we took the bandages off! My instructor let me do the dressing change with betadine and all that good stuff.. just some background- she was diabetic with several left foot ulcers. She got her foot cut off at the ankle and they left it open because she was going to have to get more cut off after her infection began to get better. It was by far the coolest thing I've ever seen...
