Elective C-sections- moms idea or the providers?
I hope my response does not offend anyone, and this opinion is specifically for elective C-sections- they should be outlawed. Doctors who push them for easy scheduling or insurance/ money purposes should have their licenses taken away, and women who do not want to give birth to a baby should not have a baby. It is in my opinion that our bodies were made to have children, and unless there is a medical emergency there is no reason to interfere. My mother's first child was a breech lady partsl birth, and my stepsister delivered a 12 pound baby lady partslly- these days a doctor would have pushed a C-section on both of them. Somehow they were just fine.

Death of a Special Co-Worker
I am truly sorry for all of your losses... my heart goes out to her son. We mothers know that we would always give our lives for our children, but so few actually do it. I am fighting back my tears.

threatened at work
YIKES! That is wrong on so many levels I don't even know where to begin. The unfortunate thing is that I am imagining that many of these incidents could be prevented if the establishment cared enough to spend a bit more money on more staffing/security. My heart goes out to you and all of your colleagues.

threatened at work
:rotfl: My dark humor might be shining through- but that is hilarious! But seriously, to Gonzo, I am hoping nothing bad comes out of this situation. I have no words of advice to give you. My last stalker left me alone only after my scary looking friends with big muscles and tattooed faces kindly requested that he stop bothering me. I consider myself lucky that he listened.

What does LU mean?
After some research, the best I can come up with is that it is the Lutheran Hospital Facility, and LU is the coding for that... if it is the ad that I found, it is surgery dept... hope that helps! Good luck! I hope you get the job!

Hoping I don't get the flu
Oh dear! I do hope you don't get the flu... but congratulations on your pregnancy! I do feel for you- being pregnant and having the flu would be no fun for you or your baby. What you said about being able to pick it up anywhere is true though, but it can be frustrating when you are taking as many precautions as you can and it seems like your efforts are futile due to another person's mistake. But mistakes do happen, just know that you do your best, and that is all that you can do. Just wait until your baby finds some piece of yucky garbage on the ground as a present for you, and promptly puts his or her hands in the mouth after delivering the gift to you... I lose my mind every time (on the inside)!:rollGood luck and keep us posted- maybe pregnancy has given you immunity of steel!

Time-sensitive! : Suggestions for AP Flashcards
Yikes! You have probably already had your test by now, so my reply will be in vain, but I have had a lot of recent experience with flashcards. Everyone in my class seemed to have a different approach to them, but for me, the making of the flashcards helped me more than the studying of them afterward. The time I spent photocopying pictures, whiting out words, gluing to index cards, and writing the information was invaluable. Sometimes if my exam was soon, I never even used the flashcards I made, but I somehow knew all of the information. After my exam, I would loan my flashcards to a friend in a different section- she learned by looking at them. I wish you the best on your exam- you will make it through! :)

Mandatory Flu Shots
In response to the OP, I am just in school, but the school is requiring both the seasonal and the H1N1 vaccinations. We can sign a waiver if we want, but then we will have to wear a mask all day in clinicals. We will only be allowed to remove it for lunch. I am opposed to mandatory vaccinations, but I understand and support the reasoning behind it, and had my first flu shot ever this fall. I will also get the H1N1 vaccination, but I am a little afraid of that one.

Son wants to be a CRNA, but wants his ears guaged
Viewed as unprofessional = discrimination Should a person with tattoos or gauged ears also sue an establishment for asking that they be covered or removed? Both originated from tribal peoples and some people have them for spiritual reasons. Or are just some forms of discrimination OK while others are not? Just food for thought...

Son wants to be a CRNA, but wants his ears guaged
I feel that discrimination based on body modification is as deplorable as any other form of discrimination. That being said, all forms of discrimination unfortunately still exist. Your son should do as he wishes, and if he does encounter problems, he can always purchase some hider plugs (see link below). You said he wanted a small gauge in his lobes, so hiding them should not be too much of a problem. Of course, small to him might be much different than small to you. Good luck! http://www.tribalectic.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=17499&idcategory=0

that's good to know... it seemed like a cool resource, but things aren't always what they seem.

IRSC students
That is the same book I used... with the included CD. I just took the tests over and over again. I would also wait till late at night when I was really tired, and take the tests then too- somehow it seemed to exercise my brain a little more than when taking them with a fresh mind (I know that probably sounds weird). I would time myself when taking them, and whatever questions I got wrong I would research the answers. IRSC has those study sessions too- it was not convenient for me to attend them with my commute, but a lady in my A+P class went to them and told me they were very helpful. But after forcing myself to take so many of the tests sleep deprived, when I went in and took the real one right after my morning coffee it seemed like a piece of cake :chuckle(well not a piece of cake really, but you know what I mean) Just keep practicing, and if you have any specific questions, always feel free to ask- I would be glad to help in any way that I can :icon_hug:

Oh No!!! I am so sorry to hear it but all is not lost... you will be working on Bachelor's classes, and you can take the NLN exam again six months after the last time you took it. The highest score will count. NLN makes a great study guide for it- the practice tests were invaluable to me. Whatever you do- don't be discouraged- you WILL be an excellent nurse...

Am i too old to start aiming for a nursing career
I think all the previous posters have answered your question but I just want to reiterate what they said, and to further encourage you-- DO IT!!! I am a thirty three year old single mom and have just been accepted to my nursing program. I am older than most of the applicants, but so what?! I think life experience has helped me in school in ways that I never imagined that they would, and the day I think I am too old to do something is a day I hope I never see! You can do it!!! :anpom: oh- and the first step is to look into schools and get those pre-reqs done... each school will have a list of requirements and go talk to the counselor (but take what he or she says with a grain of salt- I have had experience with misinformation at times) Hope that helps!

IRSC students
Alternurse- I don't mind your asking. I scored a 99 on my NLN, which is probably what got me in since I am finishing my pre-reqs this semester. That and I have straight A's in all the pre-reqs I have completed... but the plan to work on Bachelor's classes is a good one because those courses need to be taken either way... I am going to take some in Summer II semester regardless because nursing classes don't happen then (unless they don't divide summer semster for the RN program), and my son will be with his dad during that time If I don't do something then I'll go crazy with worry!!! If you have all your pre-reqs done with good grades I wouldn't worry too much, you probably made it in... But keep us posted and good luck!!!

ADN program... although I did have a backup plan to start taking my Bachelor's courses if I hadn't made it in. For my son's sake I'm glad I made it though. The sooner I start working in the field the better- I'm not getting any younger! :chuckle Did you hear anything yet RNurseHopeful? Alternurse? Anyone?

IRSC students
Hi. I applied for the ADN program at IRSC as well, and I am considering developing a fingernail chewing habit while waiting for the response! Good luck! Maybe we will be in classes together... I scored well on the NLN exam, and have a great GPA, but have not completed all of my prerequisites yet- they will be finished at the end of this semester. For that reason I am not all too confident on being accepted. But if not, there is always the spring application. I won't stop until they let me in- even if it is because they just get sick of seeing my name in the list of applicants!
