  1. This isn't by my SO/DH but this is from a relative. This person said they are going to school to be a nurse but they said i nthe same breath "But I am not going to wipe any butts or mess with puke":lol2:
  2. I decided to take the TEAS on the 18th. :)
  3. i change my mind. i got a lot of bad news about akron institute from some people already in the health care world. this lpn who went to akron school of practical nursing told me akron institute is a big joke in the professional world and nobody wants an RN with an associate's degree.. so im afraid of staying here.

Wow I never thought of the lozenges or the patches people need. I wonder if there would be a way to tell an employer you know just be up front and honest and say "I don't smoke but I am an ex smoker who uses nicotine gum to quit if I test positive that's why." Maybe you'd still have a chance? Anyway I am just not going to worry about it till I graduate anyway. We'll see how the job market looks then. Which reminds me my stupid brother in law smokes a lot of pot and stinks up the whole house. It makes me sick.
  5. In our school dress code is scrubs whether you are in the dental assisting program, medical billing and coding, medical assisting, or nursing program you HAVE to wear scrubs every single day even when you are in a non-medical class. No street clothes, no casual clothes. Scrubs scrubs scrubs....so we get vouchers for two scrubs tops and two scrubs bottoms for free then we have to buy the rest. We know the difference in who is who by color. Dark blue scrub bottoms are nurses, maroon scrub bottoms are medical assistant, green ish scrub bottoms are dental assistants and light blue scrub bottoms are medical billing and coding. I don't know the other colors if there are any other colors in the school. They have a very strict dress code policy at our school. But in the case of your school you can just ask the scrub wearers what they do. They might be happy to tell you.
  6. subscribing. This could get interesting. I just don't see why someone would want to go to college and pay 200 for the NCLEX and almost as much for the license to end up broker than a high school grad.

I don't know what to say. Its such a tough job market in the nursing field I guess they are trying to say "If you really want this you won't smoke" I honestly don't know what its about.
  8. Congratulations glad you got back in. That school sounds jacked up especially with the competitive student she sounds nasty!
  9. I read some of the quotes from the Yoder blog and I have to say it was very humorless and quite offensive if you ask me. OP: If you start a blog pm me a link I'll be interested in reading a collaborated blog.

I am sorry haven't been back. I have been busy as a bee studying for a test. Anyway I know I don't need to worry about it yet it won't be until 2011 when I graduate but my problem is the instructor said if they do a hair analysis even if you have second hand smoke around you then you can still fail the hair analysis test. So I will have to miss family gatherings and tell my husband to smoke outside which is cool but in the winter when its snowing like hell he will have to go into our attic. That's all I can say. Jobs are hard enough to come by without other distractions.

I actually talked to an ER nurse at a hospital while my niece was getting checked out after having a cop physically assault her (she was unarmed) and she said the same thing "You can't be a smoker if you work in a lot of these area hospitals." And we both looked at each other and her and I said "I don't smoke at all." And my niece said "All I smoke are cigarettes." And the nurse said "Not even allowed to smoke cigarettes if they decide to hire you." We were in shock but the orientation instructor confirmed it yesterday when she said that if we smoke now we might want to consider quitting at the end of the program because they won't hire anyone and she listed like most of the hospitals in the area and said Cleveland Clinic isn't far behind with the drug testing for nicotine. They said its not against the law to deny a smoker employment because its not discrimination. So a lot of girls said "Dang and I smoke." My husband smokes and I can merely choose not to be around him but his whole family smokes and they have family get togethers where I'd be surrounded by smokers but I guess at the end of the program when I am looking for work.....I can just let them know I cannot attend any get together type deals.
  12. I start school next Wednesday and at orientation we were told that before you get hired at many of the hospitals you get your hair cut and checked for drugs including nicotine because they wont hire cigarette smokers. I don't smoke so it isn't a big deal for me but my husband smokes around me. I asked about second hand smoke and the insstructors doing the orientation said even second hand smoke can prevent you from getting hired if they find tracdes of it in your hair. So my husband is going to have to smoke away from me when I get close to graduation. I guess you'd want to quit out here because you can't smoke within so many blocks of a hospital out here anyway. I was just wondering if anyone else was informed that they'd have to quit smoking in order to get a job where they live? I don't have to quit because I don't but my husband is going to either have to quit or just not smoke around me.
  13. Thats kinda why I wish I could have started school near by dad in Mississippi because ice storms wouldn't be a worry for me. Unfortunately for that whole thing I live in Ohio and its already cold. I can't picture what we have coming for us this winter but I hope to make as little excuses as possible when it comes to weather and show up but you can't always and that's my fear. Gettin hit with ice storms, hail or extreme snow and my husband is MR. Safety. He's the only one who currently knows how to drive and I'd get stuck at home having to call in if he said no way no how. To the OP: I hope you get your appeal. Good luck. I know shoes can be a non-issue when you have a lot of bills and a little money. I can see why someone can be in such a predicament.
  14. Then don't reply. I failed to see the point in your reply.......... Also if you look BACK at the pet peeves thread you'd know what I was referring to.
  15. Akron police are known for being abusive.
  16. I was told at Akron Institute-OF Herzing University that I have to go to the nursing program for 20 months or are you going from LPN to RN that might be the difference? I have to do 20 months with no previous nursing degree. They take FASFA and I know I have to take the TEAS To get in and it has to be a score to be in the top 30 so i can be in the c lass. im applying for the jan 2010 classes. IDK they are expensive but idk.....
  17. These stories are so interesting! I am glad I get to read them.
  18. Cool well I don't know all the rules sorry. I am just about to be a student and saw the title pro-choice and prodding and what not it got my eye.
  19. I think I've probably done it more than once in the past. I've also gone to the ER for stupid stuff when I was brand new at momming stuff and thought something was an emergency that turned out to be something that could have waited like when my son was pushed off of a slide and landed on te back of his head..... After I found out it was nothing I kicked myself in the pants the whole way home. But besides saying 1 thing today I am sure I've popped up when not needed at other times too. Also when my hsuband's ex gave birth I went up the next day to see her to realize her son didn't have a binkie and so I asked her nurse (who came in the room to find out her schedule for meds) if the baby could get a soothie and she seemed annoyed with me because the baby wasnt my son. She told me where to get them and that was good enough. Then when I happily went to get it without complaining or anything when I came back with it she seemed nicer than she did when I asked for it. I didn't think I was rude for asking. I wasn't raised to be a total jerk but the baby was sucking everything in sight when he wasn't even hungry lol. She was actually friendlier to me after that. I have a great relationship with my husband's ex girlfriend lol.
  20. just wanna subscribe..........so i can continue to read this thread.

  22. Hoping you get more replies this could turn out to be an interesting thread.
  23. I guess I better pray to get into a Catholic hospital although someone told me before they dont make as much as reg hospitals and I've heard other stuff. The abortion issue has actually made me cry and almost vomit before. I cannot even debate about it, that's how hard it is on me. So I'd rather not assist in it. I could take care of a woman post op....though.
  24. Hi I am totally prolife except that I never condemn. I don't know a lot of pro-lifers who would consider themselves condemning but that may be my area or the people I associate with. I'd take care of a patient after an abortion etc etc but I wouldn't be able to assist in one. I hope thats okay because thats the ONLY thing I can see being a problem for me ethically. I could never assist in an abortion or anything like that but I am compassionate and believe I could care for someone post abortion though.
  25. I realize the pet peeves threads date back to 04 for some of them but I wanted to share some stories with y'all. I've been that patient so to speak. For example: Today I had to take my husband's niece to the ER because her left hand was completely numb for more than 12 hours and since a cop choked her; her shoulder and neck were sore. So anyway........I'm waiting in the room with her chatting it up about starting school and the doctor comes in to talk to her. She's not really talkin much just sayin "Man this hurrtttttts!!" So I shut my mouth when the doctor got in and he asked her what all of her concerns were about the wrist and she told him. I blurted out "Also the cop choked her" So yeah HI I am THAT visitor. BUT after reading the pet peeve thread I checked myself on my manners, etiquette etc before I said something to a nurse today. Like for example a nurse was busy at the nurse's station and I wanted to find out if I could go see my niece by marriage. SO when I saw they were all busy I sat back down in the waiting room until they were done. Then asked them nicely if I could go see her (using her full name so they won't have to tune into their ESP ) I learned a lot from you all for future reference when I am in the hospital. I mean I try my best to be considerate/ polite etc even when I get nurses who seem rude because I give them the benefit of the doubt that they had a bad/long day. My uncle used to be an RN and he was sometimes crabby after work. I mean some of the stuff I read in those olllld posts made me think "I've done that." or "I haven't done that" One time a nurse asked me to keep a chart of my son's eating, pooping and peeing etc when he was 4 months old and vomiting blood so he had to be admitted. So she told me to keep a chart so thats the only time I did a "notebook" thing. I can say I've never demanded water from a nurse. I've never needed my pillow fluffed. I can do it myself. I even felt embarrassed when a nurse said it was hospital policy that she push me in a wheel chair when I had good working legs. So I'm not a pushy patient. Also I would have never DREAMED of walking into another patient's room.:banghead: But the kinda patient I am is the one who says dumb stuff constantly. I don't try to use medical jargon or anything. I just say really stupid stuff and wish I didn't. I bet nurses HATE me. Today my husband's niece and I talked to a nurse at the ER who cheered us on and gave us some tips about nursing school and trying to find a job when we're done. Well we were only talking to her because she was in my dh's niece's room and telling us stuff and we told her my niece cant drink anymore and she said "That's wise!" and she said "Yeah we're starting school soon." and she asked us what for and thats how we got into ALL of that discussion. She was really nice. I hope it was sincere. :chuckle
