  1. obizyanka I am probably right where you are. I got an emailform my academic advisor telling me i needed one more nursing course and that ihad to sign a letter stating i would take the course before they couldproceed. The letter was full of mistakesand the "letter" that was attached was a syllabus not a letter atall. I contacted her and told her, shesent a corrected letter that was still wrong then finally sent a corrected one!geez what a terrible first impression for my academic advisor! Anyway i looked at the transfer evaluation and it isunbelievable it looks like i have to take at least 7 liberal arts classes ( Ialready have my BA in education) It would not be so bad if they were math orscience courses but they are things like art and political science. This would take my tuition up a lot and I really don't wantto take another art course at this point in my life. I think I am going to look into Chamberlin again as theyaccepted all of my credits. I know thetuition will end up being the same as UTA with all those other classes but Iwon't be doing additional work to earn the same degree. Best of luck to all of you at UTA, it does sound like a goodprogram and if I didn't already have a bachelor’s degree I think I would stickwith it.
  2. I truely feel for you as this is how I would feel if I had to work with adults!! I don't like working with teens much either. If you are feeling this way the kids probably don't care for you too much either or do the parents I bet. Some days the crying and running around and parents get to me as well and LOVE peds! When I used to have to work in ICU which I hated to the nth degree, I would try to break my day down into smaller increments like telling myself only 2 hours then take a bathroom break, another 2 hours then lunch etc. something like that to get me thru the day. It sounds like you have a busy practice overall with staff that isn't that reliable which I can understand being frustrating to begin with. Would your manager be open to you requesting not to work with the pediatrician? Sounds like that would be the best solution if you are going to stay in that office.
  3. Hi catlove- if you have never really worked with kids before this is a great opportunity for you. You can always get your trach and tube experiences during a job orientation in the hospital and if that is where you decide to go after school you will get alot of those opportunities on any med/surg unit. My advice would be to take in all you can about normal child development and growth and how to interact with children. This is valuable knowledge! If you don't know what typical is you can't pick up on what is not typical so it is really good to know what normal looks like. I would make sure to identify different age group milestones in development before you clinical then look for examples of those milestones in real life. You will probably get a good deal of practice with heights weights OFCs etc. Immunizations and lead testing are routine as well and by the way giving shots to kids is a whole different world that giving them to adults. Above all enjoy you pediatric experience - kids are great fun.
  4. i am a little frustrated that I have not heard anything yet so I am assuming i am not going to be able to start until November (boo) was really hoping to join you all in September.
  5. my last transcript was just received today so now I will have to wait to hear if I am accepted or not. I already have a BA in special educations so I am hoping I can get started with the nursing courses right away. I think I have to wait til november to start now since it took so long to get my transcripts. Good Luck to you!
  6. I see our nurse manager is getting ready for the new batch of interns!
  7. Thanks for the response! I am in the Pittsburgh area. I am trying to get in touch with some of the LCPs in this area to see if it would be worth while. I figured I would have to keep my "day job" so I am not so sure this will be doable for me as I work 10hr days as it is, but I am still going to seriously think about it.
  8. Which program??? I was thinking of either the University of Florida or the Capital University Law School or Kaplan. Do you know of any others?? Also do you think this is more viable than a certificate in case management???? I am still undecided as to which program to take. I am leaning toward the LCP but I am not sure I could make a full time living at it. Any thoughts???
  9. Yep that is what I am talking about. I have been doing a little online research and it seems that there are 2 different ways to get certification. Some sites say this is an expert witness type thing others describe it as care coordination or legal nursing. Can't figure it out yet.
  10. I am looking around to expand my experience and change the direction of my career, life planning seem like it is something I would be interested in, does anyone know anything about this field????
  11. Thanks I did not know that, we all thought they were working under our licensure so that is good to know. I guess the role of the RN is not necessary in outpt primary care anymore. The lines between RN and MA are blurred. I know at our office we are instructed not to talk (assess ) the pt just get them in and get them out so where is the nursing process in that???? Things sure have changed over the last 20 years I guess you just have to go with it or be left out in the cold Pt care doesn't seem to be on the minds of the organization administrators. sigh... just my opinion.
  12. I work in a HUGE pediatric practice with MAs that I really like and they do a great job. The thing that gets me is that every time an RN quits they are replaced by one or two MAs. We are definitely being phased out of the practice. Our manager lets the MAs do just about everything including giving medications and injections. When the RNs have taken our concerns to management we are told to train the MAs to do the best job they can because that is the way it is going to be. It really gets to me.
  13. I have a diploma in nursing (28 years worth of experience) and a BA in special education. I work in a peds office and I know I can't keep doing that for another 20 some years til I retire. Anyone have any thoughts on what would be the best path to take.... I am interested in both teaching and case management. I do not want to spend a lot of money on a degreee if I am never going to make it up in salary,,,, I am really puzzled as to what to do? If this type of thing was discussed elsewhere please direct me to the thread:D Thanks a bunch for any suggestions/advice
  14. RNinFL I feel like you were reading my mind!!!!!lol! I too have been a nurse for a long time all at the same children's hospital in various positions now at the same medical center in the pediatric clinic. We have alot of special needs kids and no real case manager which floors me to begin with. I really think case management is for me but like you I do not have a BSN. I do have a BA in special education. Currently I do alot of the "case management" for a specific group of patients but it is done on the run and not given any worth from the management. I am very frustrated as I know I could be doing more for these kids. I have been thinking of getting a casemanagement certificate but don't think it would really change things in my present office. Maybe I should get it and then look else where. It is frustrating to want to do something and not really know how to go about doing it. I hope you have had some luck with your quest! Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in your situation BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!!!
